Colocar as mãos em um novo álbum do SUFFOCATION é sempre um momento de grande alegria para qualquer um que seja um maníaco death metal. Esses caras estão na ativa há mais de 3 décadas e ajudaram a moldar o que conhecemos como brutal death metal. Não é necessário muitos adjetivos para descrever a importância desse grupo originário de Nova Iorque para a cena extrema.

“Hymns from Apocrypha” é o primeiro álbum oficial da banda que não traz o seu icônico vocalista Frank Mullen. Ele deixou a banda já há algum tempo para se dedicar à sua vida privada e profissional e deixou uma dúvida de quem iria conseguir fechar essa lacuna, já que ele sempre foi um dos grandes vocalistas do estilo e dono de um carisma gigantesco.

A banda encontrou na figura de Ricky Myers o vocalista para assumir essa grande responsabilidade e ainda que o mesmo não tenha o carisma do vocalista original (nada mais compreensível já que se tratam de indivíduos diferentes) ele simplesmente destruiu tudo pela frente com a sua performance nesse álbum. O vocal dele encaixou perfeitamente ao estilo brutal e técnico do SUFFOCATION e realmente surpreendeu. Mas falando do álbum em si, “Hymns from…” é um álbum que entra com uma moral gigantesca na discografia da banda. E olha que estamos falando de um apanhado de álbuns considerados uma referência para o estilo.

Terrence Hobbs e Charlie Errigo realmente estavam inspirados nas linhas de guitarra do novo álbum e ofereceram o que de melhor o SUFFOCATION possui em sua essência. É uma mistura perfeita dos elementos mais clássicos do grupo, mas sem soar datado. Quando o álbum se inicia com a faixa título, qualquer receio em relação ao vocal desaparece logo nos primeiros segundos de execução do mesmo. Faixa complexa, quebrada, cheia de camadas e pesadíssima.

“Perpetual Deception” tem tudo o que fez o SUFFOCATION ser a banda que é. Brutal death metal em puro estado de arte. Riffs intrincados, bateria rapidíssima. A energia dessa faixa tem muito do que ouvíamos no primeiro álbum da banda, o que é realmente algo muito foda. Mesmo sendo a segunda faixa do álbum, ela figura entre as melhores. O alto nível técnico dos guitarristas é gritante quando “Dim Veil of Obscurity” é tocada como se fosse uma metralhadora varrendo tudo à sua frente.

“Immortal Execration” se inicia com uma atmosfera obscura, lembrando muito algo que o velho Morbid Angel faria, mas logo em seguida o velho brutal metal da morte é liberado de suas amarras e dilacera seus tímpanos com uma tempestade de riffs assassinos e um peso descomunal. A selvageria é plena quando a execução de “Seraphim Enslavement” se encerra. O baterista Eric Morotti mostra porque está ocupando um posto pelo qual só passaram monstros do instrumento. Uma performance milimétrica.

“Descendents” tem alguns elementos criados pela guitarra que são um tanto diferentes, mas tudo é tocado com a marca registrada de brutalidade padrão SUFFOCATION, ou seja, nenhuma pedra se mantém intacta. O som do baixo aqui está martelando sem piedade. O crime se mantém com “Embrance the Suffering”, que tem alguns solos matadores e continua com as duas últimas faixas do álbum: “Delusions of Mortality” e “Ignorant Deprivation”.

Essas duas fecham o caixão com pregos batidos com pura violência. “Hymns from the Apocrypha” é com certeza um álbum que vai agradar a todos os fãs do SUFFOCATION. A capa continua a tradição de grandes artes utilizadas por esses mestres da brutalidade. Produção está incrível. O que poderia acrescentar a mais ? Que vá e adquira esse trabalho. Não há chance de arrependimento.

Getting your hands on a new SUFFOCATION album is always a moment of great joy for anyone who is a death metal maniac. These guys have been around for over three decades and have helped mould what we know as brutal death metal. You don’t need many adjectives to describe the importance of this group from New York to the extreme scene.

“Hymns from Apocrypha” is the band’s first official album without their iconic vocalist Frank Mullen. He left the band some time ago to devote himself to his private and professional life and it was uncertain who would be able to fill the gap, since he had always been one of the great vocalists of the style and had a gigantic charisma.

The band found Ricky Myers as the vocalist to take on this great responsibility and although he doesn’t have the charisma of the original vocalist (nothing more understandable since they are different individuals) he simply destroyed everything in front of him with his performance on this album. His vocals fitted in perfectly with SUFFOCATION‘s brutal and technical style and really surprised. But when it comes to the album itself, “Hymns from…” is an album that enters the band’s discography with a gigantic moral. And we’re talking about a collection of albums considered a reference for the style.

Terrence Hobbs and Charlie Errigo were really inspired by the guitar lines on the new album and delivered the best that SUFFOCATION has to offer. It’s a perfect blend of the group’s most classic elements, but without sounding dated. When the album opens with the title track, any fears about the vocals disappear within the first few seconds. It’s complex, broken, full of layers and very heavy.

“Perpetual Deception” has everything that made SUFFOCATION the band they are. Brutal death metal at its finest. Intricate riffs, fast drums. The energy of this track has a lot of what we heard on the band’s first album, which is really something. Even though it’s the second track on the album, it ranks among the best. The high technical level of the guitarists is glaring when “Dim Veil of Obscurity” is played as if it were a machine gun sweeping everything in front of it.

“Immortal Execration” begins with a dark atmosphere, very reminiscent of something the old Morbid Angel would do, but soon afterwards the old brutal death metal is freed from its bonds and tears your eardrums apart with a storm of murderous riffs and uncompromising heaviness. The savagery is in full swing when “Seraphim Enslavement” comes to a close. Drummer Eric Morotti shows why he is occupying a position that only monsters of the instrument have passed through. A millimetre performance.

“Descendents” has some elements created by the guitar that are a little different, but everything is played with SUFFOCATION‘s trademark brutality, meaning that no stone is left unturned. The bass sound here is hammering mercilessly. The crime continues with “Embrance the Suffering”, which has some killer solos and continues with the last two tracks on the album: “Delusions of Mortality” and “Ignorant Deprivation”.

These two close the coffin with nails pounded in with sheer violence. “Hymns from the Apocrypha” is sure to please all SUFFOCATION fans. The cover continues the tradition of great art used by these masters of brutality. The production is incredible. What more could I add? Go out and get it. There’s no chance of regret.
