WAMPYRINACHT – Night of the Desecration (CD 2022)

O veterano da cena grega de Black Metal “Necrolord” fundou o WAMPYRINACHT em 1995, lançou uma demo em 1996 e um EP em 1998, já com lineup totalmente diferente. Depois desse período, congelou seu projeto pessoal e envolveu-se em diversas outras bandas, dentre elas Αχέροντας (ACHERONTAS) e NAER MATARON.

 Após um longo hiato, retomou as atividades do WAMPYRINACHT em 2017 com seu primeiro álbum completo “We Will Be Watching: Les cultes de Satan et les mystères de la mort”, bem recebido pela crítica especializada e fãs do gênero. Em 2020, participou de um Split com cinco outras entidades, cada qual contribuindo com uma música.

 Avançando com o projeto, a banda está prestes a lançar seu segundo álbum “Night of the Desecration” por intermédio do selo germânico “Iron Bonehead Productions”, onde “Necrolord” (composição, letras, guitarras, baixo, teclados) tem como parceiro “Acherontas VP Sorcerer” (Vocais – ACHERONTAS, STUTTHOF, ex-NOCTERNITY). Para a bateria, o contratado “Dothur” (MACABRE OMEN, SANCTUS NEX) fez ótimo trabalho de percussão.

 Esses longos e prolíficos anos de atividade refinaram a técnica, e afiaram a qualidade de composição do músico, algo facilmente perceptível no novo trabalho. O Black Metal conjurado pelo duo tem sangue puro grego e fortíssimos elementos de Heavy tradicional, liderado pela guitarra imponente de “Necrolord”.

 As bases não são somente sólidas, os riffs soam especialmente maduros e magnéticos, e em alguns casos até brilhantes, como na espetacular “Hammer of The Angels”. Os leads melódicos e sinistros também impactam a obra muito positivamente.  

 Os vocais do “VP Sorcerer” possuem qualidade reconhecida, como bem sabem aqueles que o conhecem do Αχέροντας (ou ACHERONTAS – eles passaram a usar internacionalmente o nome com caracteres gregos). Aqui não foi diferente, há entonações macabras certeiras em todas as suas variações.

 A primeira amostra da sonoridade atual da banda é “Thorns for my Damnation”, que além do memorável trabalho de guitarras, se destaca pelos vocais femininos angelicais ao fundo, contrastando com a aura agourenta da faixa. A inclusão de uns acordes da famosa “Marcha Fúnebre” (Marche Funèbre – Frédéric Chopin) foi um belo toque.

 “Night of the Desecration” se desenvolve lentamente, e conta com a inserção breve de instrumentos diferentes, como um violino. Há solos bem legais, mas a música só pega no breu mesmo depois de sete minutos. Ainda assim, vale muito pelas guitarras e pelos impetuosos quatro minutos finais.

“The Church of Thorns” chega atropelando após a curta instrumental “My Angel”. A tradicional estrutura do Black Metal grego se faz presente em toda sua plenitude e vigor. As partes velozes e agressivas são quase onipresentes, e soam majestosas. A ambientação caprichada também é digna de menção.

“A Wanderer’s Journey…” é mais um interlúdio instrumental, que abre caminho para a melhor faixa do álbum, a já mencionada “Hammer of the Angels”. Riff de abertura suntuoso, andamentos vibrantes e atmosfera épica, melodias memoráveis. De fato, um puta som de ponta a ponta.

 “…Towards the Glimmering Star” é uma instrumental arrastada, em compasso fúnebre. Ela fecha o álbum em conjunto com “Of Statues Wrecked and Ruined”, que possui um coral de vozes femininas etéreas, similares às da intro.

 Álbum excelente do WAMPYRINACHT. Única crítica negativa é em relação ao número de instrumentais. Gostaria de mais faixas diretas e marcantes como as resenhadas acima. Ah sim, em tempo: Que arte de capa fudida do grego “Maximos Manolis”, uma das mais belas, blasfemas e repletas de simbolismo deste semestre.

Recomendo fortemente aos fãs de VARATHRON (GRE), KATAVASIA (GRE), ZEMIAL (GRE), MALOKARPATAN (SLK), ROOT (CZE), MORTUARY DRAPE (ITA), NEGATIVE PLANE (EUA).

The veteran of the Greek Black Metal scene known as “Necrolord” founded WAMPYRINACHT back in 1995, released a demo in 1996 and an EP in 1998, displaying then a totally different lineup. After that period, he put his personal project on hold, and became involved in several other bands like Αχέροντας (ACHERONTAS) and NAER MATARON.

 After a long hiatus, he resumed WAMPYRINACHT’ activities in 2017 with the first full-length album “We Will Be Watching: Les cultes de Satan et les mystères de la mort”, which was well received by critics and fans of the genre at the time. In 2020, they took part in a Split with five other entities, each offering and presenting one song.

 Moving forward with the project, the band is about to release their second album “Night of the Desecration” through German label “Iron Bonehead Productions”, where “Necrolord” (composition, lyrics, guitars, bass, keyboards) joins forces with “Acherontas VP Sorcerer” (Vocals – ACHERONTAS, STUTTHOF, ex-NOCTERNITY). For drums, the British “Dothur” (MACABRE OMEN, SANCTUS NEX) was hired, and did a great job behind his kit.

 These long and prolific years of activity refined his technique, and enhanced the musician’s abilities as a composer, something easily noticeable in the new record. The Black Metal conjured by the duo has pure Greek blood and strong traditional Heavy Metal elements, proudly led by “Necrolord’s” imposing guitars.

 Bases are not only solid, the riffage sounds especially mature and magnetic, and in some cases even brilliant, as in the spectacular “Hammer of The Angels”. The melodic and sinister leads also impact the work very positively.

 “VP Sorcerer’s” vocals are solid, as anyone familiar with his work on Αχέροντας (or ACHERONTAS – they’ve started using the name with Greek characters internationally) surely knows at this point. Fortunately, his performance isn’t any different here, as he produces sharp, macabre intonations of multiple variations throughout the album.

 The first proper sample of the band’s current sound is “Thorns for my Damnation“, which stands out, in addition to the memorable guitar work, for the angelic female voices in the background, contrasting with the track’s ominous aura. The inclusion of some “March Funèbre” (Frédéric Chopin) chords was a fine touch.

 “Night of the Desecration” is a slow burner. It has a brief insertion of different instruments, such as a violin. There are some exquisite guitar solos, but the song only shows its true grit after long seven minutes. It’s still worth for the killer guitars and its impetuous final four minutes.

“The Church of Thorns” arrives laying waste after the short instrumental “My Angel”. The traditional Greek Black Metal structure is presented in all its glory. The fast, aggressive parts are almost omnipresent, and they sound majestic. The ghoulish atmosphere is also worth mentioning.

“A Wanderer’s Journey…” is yet another instrumental interlude, which paves the way for the best track on the album, the aforementioned “Hammer of the Angels”. Sumptuous opening riff, vibrant tempos and epic atmosphere, memorable melodies. Sure thing, one hell of a song from start to finish.

 “…Towards the Glimmering Star” is a sluggish instrumental, with a funereal vibe. It closes the album along with “Of Statues Wrecked and Ruined”, which shows the same choir of ethereal female voices heard in the intro.

 Excellent new album by WAMPYRINACHT. The only negative criticism goes to the high number of instrumentals. I’d certainly appreciate more straightforward and outstanding tracks as the ones mentioned above. Oh yes, almost forgot: What a great cover art by the Greek “Maximos Manolis”, one of the most beautiful, blasphemous and rich in symbolism I’ve seen so far, considering 2022 releases.

 Strongly recommended for fans of VARATHRON (GRE), KATAVASIA (GRE), ZEMIAL (GRE), MALOKARPATAN (SLK), ROOT (CZE), MORTUARY DRAPE (ITA), NEGATIVE PLANE (USA).
