O THE SPIRIT é uma das bandas que tenho ouvido muito desde que tive o prazer de conhecer a sua música. Inicialmente a influência e proximidade de sua música com o saudoso Dissection foi o ponto de partida dessa admiração.

Ouvir “Songs Against Humanity”, novo trabalho dos caras é perceber que a banda está amadurecendo e evoluindo, mas sem abandonar suas origens musicais. Obviamente ainda é possível perceber algo dos suecos na música da banda, mas tudo agora transborda de personalidade própria. Os músicas colocaram sua própria marca nas composições e posso afirmar que esse álbum é o trabalho mais poderoso da banda até o momento.

Partindo de uma produção poderosa, “Songs Against Humanity” se molda em torno de músicas técnicas, cheias de feeling e ainda assim cobertas por um manto de extremidade que faz cada composição aqui soar de forma impactante.

“Against Humanity” abre o álbum e ela é responsável por apresentar ao ouvinte tudo aquilo que já escrevi acima. É melódica sem soar brega, tem momentos mais brutais e acima de tudo, é executada por músicos que realmente sabem colocar sua alma e técnica a serviço de uma boa música.

O nível sobre ainda mais com a potente “Room 101”. O riff principal é direto mas melódico e cria o ambiente certo para o desenvolvimento da música. É uma música mais contida e cheia de feeling, com uma sonoridade envolvente. Com um início quase tribal “Cosmic Rain and Human Dust” prova o quanto o trabalho de guitarras do THE SPIRIT é diferenciado. Nem tudo é sobre tocar milhares de notas por minuto. Um riff criado com um grande sentimento é tão ou mais hipnotizante e esse álbum tem riffs assim de sobra.

Não posso negar que estava esperando essa próxima faixa. haha “Spectres of Terror” usa todos os elementos já mencionados nesse review e adiciona uma dose bastante significativa de velocidade e peso, fazendo dessa umas das melhores faixas do álbum. O momento quase thrash metal foi uma jogada de mestre e deixou a música ainda mais direta. Um belo solo complementa uma música realmente de alto nível.

“Death is my Salvation” é aquela música que não vai muito longe na brutalidade (que aparece em alguns momentos), mas ainda assim é um tapa na cara. Andamento cadenciado, riffs e bases de guitarra com personalidade e um solo de guitarra de respeito. A música mais longa do álbum não se perde nisso e entrega. Praticamente na mesma linha vem “Nothingness Forever“, que possui alguns momentos mais pesados, mas que mantém o primoroso trabalho das guitarras que é uma constante durante todo o trabalho. Outra grande composição.

A última música do álbum é “Orbiting Sol IV“, uma faixa instrumental que foca no peso, na melodia e finaliza um álbum fantástico de forma perfeita.

Um álbum como esse pede uma grande capa e o trabalho artístico realizado na capa de “Songs Against Humanity” é belíssimo e o melhor, foge do senso comum que tomou uma parcela das bandas extremas da atualidade. Imagino isso na capa de um disco de vinil.

THE SPIRIT is one of the bands I’ve been listening to a lot since I had the pleasure of getting to know their music. Initially, the influence and proximity of their music to the late Dissection was the starting point for this admiration.

Listening to “Songs Against Humanity”, the band’s new work, you realize that they are maturing and evolving, but without abandoning their musical origins. Obviously you can still see something of the Swedes in the band’s music, but everything now oozes their own personality. The songs have put their own stamp on the compositions and I can say that this album is the band’s most powerful work to date.

Starting with a powerful production, “Songs Against Humanity” is shaped around technical songs, full of feeling and yet covered in a cloak of extremity that makes every composition here sound impactful.

“Against Humanity” opens the album and is responsible for introducing the listener to everything I’ve already written above. It’s melodic without sounding cheesy, it has more brutal moments and, above all, it’s performed by musicians who really know how to put their soul and technique at the service of good music.

The bar is raised even higher with the powerful “Room 101”. The main riff is direct but melodic and creates the right atmosphere for the song to develop. It’s a more restrained song full of feeling, with an engaging sound. With an almost tribal beginning, “Cosmic Rain and Human Dust” proves how different THE SPIRIT‘s guitar work is. It’s not all about playing thousands of notes a minute. A riff created with great feeling is just as, if not more, mesmerizing and this album has plenty of riffs like that.

I can’t deny that I’ve been waiting for this next track. haha “Spectres of Terror” uses all the elements already mentioned in this review and adds a very significant dose of speed and heaviness, making it one of the best tracks on the album. The almost thrash metal moment was a masterstroke and made the song even more direct. A beautiful solo complements a really top-notch song.

“Death is my Salvation” is a song that doesn’t go too far in terms of brutality (which does appear at times), but it’s still a slap in the face. A slow tempo, riffs and guitar bases with personality and a respectable guitar solo. The longest song on the album doesn’t get lost in this and delivers. Along the same lines comes “Nothingness Forever”, which has some heavier moments, but maintains the exquisite guitar work that is a constant throughout the album. Another great composition.

The last song on the album is “Orbiting Sol IV”, an instrumental track that focuses on heaviness and melody and ends a fantastic album perfectly.

An album like this calls for a great cover and the artwork on the cover of “Songs Against Humanity” is beautiful and, what’s more, it eschews the common sense that has taken over many of today’s extreme bands. I can imagine it on the cover of a vinyl record.
