Confesso que os lançamentos anteriores do VALGRIND nunca me chamaram tanto a atenção, ao menos não a ponto de recomendá-los como algo especialmente cativante, ou digno de nota.
A banda é um trio italiano fundado em 1996, que lançou algumas demos antes de entrar em hibernação por longos anos. Seu primeiro álbum de estúdio saiu apenas em 2012, e desde então os caras já entregaram quatro discos completos e mais dois EPs.
Temos em “Millennium of Night Bliss”, com lançamento via gravadora espanhola “Memento Mori” previsto para o final de abril, o quinto petardo do VALGRIND. E aqui, sem dúvidas, o material é totalmente merecedor da atenção do leitor que espera por algo de qualidade superior em um novo disco de metal extremo.
O Death Metal produzido pela banda reúne características dos primórdios do estilo, porém concebidos com uma pegada muito mais técnica que a média. No entanto, vale destacar que não se trata de Tech Death. Soa como o metal da morte da velha escola (às vezes proto-death, com aqueles fortes e bem-vindos elementos de Thrash) balanceado perfeitamente com níveis apropriados de melodia e destreza técnica.
A abertura dos trabalhos com “Teshub” não poderia ser melhor. Agressiva, empolgante, guitarras letais detonando riffs e leads majestosos, linhas de bateria excelentes, vocais imponentes. Tudo composto e executado com muita habilidade e bom gosto acima da média.
“Banished by Celestial Harmonies” é marcada pela percussão diferente, com alguns segmentos quase marciais, e pelas guitarras esquizofrênicas, que remetem bastante ao genial “Trey Azagthoth” do MORBID ANGEL, principalmente nos solos.
A terceira é a faixa título, uma das melhores do disco. Sua estrutura incomum e incontáveis variações a tornam única e ajudam na ótima fluência do trabalho. “Tenebra Corona Mundi” é um interlúdio de belas guitarras, interrompendo a pancadaria.
“Dark Winds of Avalon” retoma o Death Metal classudo com bases de guitarra excepcionais, trazendo algumas harmonias que lembram o melhor da vertente melódica popularizada, especialmente, pelas formações escandinavas dos anos 90.
A faixa mais agressiva e pungente do trabalho chega com “Lament of the Black Penetants…”, sucedida pela ótima “Oracle of Death”, som que conta com seções bem Thrash Death, altamente contagiantes.
Outro interlúdio anuncia a reta final do álbum com “Fear from Beyond”. Dessa vez, um pouco mais extenso, e composto a partir de teclados / sintetizadores e efeitos sonoros. A derradeira “The Path to the Temple of Black Ash” conclui o álbum com extremo refinamento, doses consideráveis de complexidade e algumas passagens mais cadenciadas.
Afirmo tranquilamente que “Millennium of Night Bliss” é o melhor registro do VALGRIND até aqui. Destaque para o trabalho soberbo de guitarras do fundador “Massimiliano Elia”.
Trabalho altamente recomendável aos fãs de NOCTURNUS (EUA), PESTILENCE (HOL), THE CHASM (MEX), INTESTINE BAALISM (JAP), HORRENDOUS (EUA), THANATOS (HOL), MITHRAS (ING).

Honestly, I must confess that VALGRIND’s previous releases never really caught my attention, at least not to the point of recommending them as something especially captivating, or worthy of repeated playing.
The band is an Italian trio founded in 1996, which released a few demos before going into “hibernation” for many years. Their first studio album only came out in 2012, and since then they have already delivered four full-length albums and two more EPs.
We have in “Millennium of Night Bliss”, to be released via Spanish label “Memento Mori” in the end of April, VALGRIND’s fifth full record. And there is, indeed, a collection of tunes totally worthy of the readers’ attention, especially for those who expect something of superior quality in a new extreme metal album.
The Death Metal brewed by these Italian gents brings together traits from the beginnings of the style, conceived with a much more technical approach than the average. However, it should be noted that this is not, by any means, Tech Death. It sounds like proper old-school death metal (sometimes proto-death, filled with strong and welcome Thrash elements) perfectly balanced with appropriate levels of melody and technical dexterity.
Opening act “Teshub” is a perfectly fitting pick. Aggressive, exciting, with lethal guitars firing majestic riffs and leads, excellent drum lines, imposing vocals. All composed and executed with great skill and great taste.
“Banished by Celestial Harmonies” is marked by a different style of percussion, with some almost martial segments, and the schizophrenic guitars, which are very reminiscent of the genius “Trey Azagthoth” (MORBID ANGEL), especially on the solos.
Third act is the title track, one of the record’s best. Its unusual structure and countless variations make it unique, aiding with the album’s optimal flow. “Tenebra Corona Mundi” is an interlude of beautiful guitars, briefly interrupting the mayhem.
“Dark Winds of Avalon” resumes their classy take on Death Metal with exceptional guitar bases, offering harmonies that reminded me of the best of the melodic subgenre popularized, mostly, by the 90’s Scandinavian classic formations.
The most aggressive and poignant track arrives with “Lament of the Black Penetants…”, followed by the great “Oracle of Death”, a piece which reeks of contagious Thrash Death with vibrant, tasty sections.
Another interlude “Fear from Beyond” announces the record’s final stretch. This time, a bit more extensive track, and basically composed with keyboards / synthesizers and subtle sound effects. “The Path to the Temple of Black Ash” concludes the album with extreme refinement, considerable doses of complexity and a few slower sections.
I can safely say that “Millennium of Night Bliss” is VALGRIND’s best work so far. Props for the superb guitar work by the founder “Massimiliano Elia”, a highlight throughout the experience.
Highly recommendable album for fans of NOCTURNUS (USA), PESTILENCE (HOL), THE CHASM (MEX), INTESTINE BAALISM (JPN), HORRENDOUS (USA), THANATOS (HOL), MITHRAS (UK).
