SWALLOW THE SUN – Hope (Reissue CD 2022)

Confesso que o SWALLOW THE SUN foi uma banda que passou em silêncio na minha vida por muito tempo, mas felizmente esses relançamentos de sua discografia em solo brasileiro tem corrigido essa grande falha da minha parte.Em fins de 2022 “Hope”, o terceiro álbum da banda recebeu sua versão nacional pela Cold Art Industry e pela Urubuz Records e esse se tornou facilmente um dos meus álbuns favoritos desse grupo finlandês. Após dois excelentes álbuns, “Hope” mostra a banda criando um belíssimo trabalho, equilibrado ao extremo e com uma carga dramática gigantesca.

O doom metal criado pelo SWALLOW THE SUN nesse trabalho não se trata apenas da velocidade reduzida, mas a isso se soma um apelo melódico e melancólico tocantes. Isso já se faz presente desde os primeiros acordes da belíssima faixa de abertura “Hope”. Em alguns momentos mais calmos, a música te leva a pensar no Paradise Lost, mas tudo vai além de ser simplesmente uma cópia ou algo assim. É o claro exemplo em que as influências vem para engrandecer um trabalho que, por si só já é grandioso. Os vocais guturais em alguns momentos, mais rasgados em outros ou até mesmo as linhas mais limpas se unem como a força motriz de uma obra cuidadosa e cheia de simbolismos. Há momentos em que a intensidade aumenta, como em “These Hours of Despair”, mas ela não se torna algo mais brutal. É apenas um tempero a mais na criação dos climas envolventes existentes na composição. Grandes orquestrações.

Uma das faixas que mais gostei foi a pesada e climática “The Justice of Suffering”. É uma composição mais contundente, mas que mantém em sua essência a proposta do grupo em termos musicais. Belos vocais limpos se destacam em meio ao aspecto mais tétrico dos vocais guturais. Que composição. O mesmo efeito se faz presente na também pesadíssima “Don´t Fall Asleep”. Ela tem um momento apoteótico logo em seu início, para logo em seguida aportar em uma estrada de delicadeza onde a emoção te guia adiante. A próxima faixa “Too Cold for Tears” é uma das mais atmosféricas desse álbum. É uma belíssima composição que vai crescendo. Tem seu início feito de forma calma e vai ganhando volume e força.

Quando “Empty Skies” se inicia é evidente que a banda nesse momentos também tinha os britânicos do My Dying Bride como uma referência musical, já que as melodias e climas criados aqui tem muita proximidade com o que o grupo inglês fazia naquele momento. Outra faixa que se destacou ao meus ouvidos foi a devastadora “No Light, No Hope”. Que peso e intensidade. As linhas melódicas são incríveis. Finalmente o álbum chega ao fim com a execução de “Doomed to Walk the Earth”. O samplers do início, algo como os barulhos de uma tempestade”, são o prelúdio para uma música que se pauta em uma linha quase tétrica, mas cheia de melodia. Um final digno para um álbum, que ao meu ver, não tem pontos negativos.

Felizmente, para nós, os dois selos nacionais escolheram esse título para ganhar sua versão nacional e como diz o velho ditado, antes tarde do que nunca. Como já é uma tradição da Cold Art Industry, o tratamento dado à produção dessa versão foi muito cuidadoso e os fãs do doom metal em solo brasileiro já podem ter acesso a um álbum tão incrível quanto “Hope”.

I must confess that SWALLOW THE SUN was a band that passed in silence in my life for a long time, but fortunately these re-releases of their discography on Brazilian soil have corrected this major flaw on my part.In late 2022 “Hope”, the third album of the band received its national version by Cold Art Industry and Urubuz Records and this has easily become one of my favorite albums of this Finnish group. After two excellent albums, “Hope” shows the band creating a beautiful work, balanced to the extreme and with a gigantic dramatic charge.

The doom metal created by SWALLOW THE SUN in this work is not only about the reduced speed, but to this is added a melodic appeal and melancholy touching. This is already present since the first chords of the beautiful opening track “Hope”. In some quieter moments, the song makes you think of Paradise Lost, but it all goes beyond being simply a copy or something. It is a clear example where the influences come to enhance a work that is already great by itself. The guttural vocals in some moments, more raspy in others or even the cleanest lines come together as the driving force of a careful work full of symbolism. There are moments when the intensity increases, like in “These Hours of Despair”, but it doesn’t become something more brutal. It’s just another spice in the creation of the enveloping climates existing in the composition. Great orchestrations.

One of the tracks I liked the most was the heavy and climatic “The Justice of Suffering”. It is a more forceful composition, but that keeps in its essence the proposal of the group in musical terms. Beautiful clean vocals stand out amidst the more tetric aspect of the guttural vocals. What a composition. The same effect is present in the also heavy “Don’t Fall Asleep”. It has an apotheosis moment right at the beginning, and then takes you to a delicate road where emotion guides you forward. The next track “Too Cold for Tears” is one of the most atmospheric tracks on the album. It is a beautiful composition that grows and grows. It has a calm beginning and then gains volume and strength. When “Empty Skies” begins it is evident that the band at that moment also had the British My Dying Bride as a musical reference, since the melodies and climates created here are very close to what the English group was doing at that moment.

Another track that stood out to my ears was the devastating “No Light, No Hope”. What heavyness and intensity. The melodic lines are incredible. Finally the album comes to an end with the performance of “Doomed to Walk the Earth”. The samplers at the beginning, something like the noises of a storm”, are the prelude to a song that sticks to an almost tetric line, but full of melody. A worthy ending to an album, which in my view, has no negative points.

Fortunately for us, the two national labels chose this title to gain its national version and as the old saying goes, better late than never. As it is a tradition of Cold Art Industry, the treatment given to the production of this release was very careful and the doom metal fans in Brazil can now have access to an album as amazing as “Hope”.
