SORCERER – Reign of the Reaper (CD 2023)

O SORCERER não é uma banda nova na cena metal mundial. O grupo foi formado ainda nos anos 80, mas durou apenas cerca de quatro anos, voltando à ativa apenas em 2010 e foi a partir daí que esses suecos realmente começar a produzir com mais intensidade e lançar os quatro álbuns de estúdio que fazem parte de sua discografia. Investindo em um doom/heavy metal da mais alta qualidade, a música deles vem evoluindo com o passar do tempo e após o lançamento do excelente “Lamenting of the Innocent”, em 2020, finalmente o SORCERER lança o seu novo álbum e posso assegurar sem nenhuma dúvida que “Reign of the Reaper” é o melhor trabalho lançado pelo grupo.

“Reign of the Reaper” reúne todas as características que fazem dele um álbum tão bom. Primeiramente a composição atingiu um nível de maturidade que impressiona. Me arrisco a dizer que a banda está em uma situação bem complicada, já que conseguir ir além em termos de qualidade de criação será um trabalho bem difícil. Melodias grandiosas, refrões de alto nível, solos de guitarra incríveis e um trabalho vocal perto da perfeição fazem desse álbum um marco na carreira da banda.

A primeira faixa do álbum é o cartão de visitas perfeito para apresentar esse trabalho. “Morning Star” é uma das melhores músicas de metal que ouço em muito tempo. Pesadíssima e com um conteúdo lírico que a faz ainda mais poderosa. Há influências claras de grupos como o Black Sabbath da fase pós Ozzy e Dio, além de muito do atemporal Candlemass, mas tudo feito com uma energia e uma força que pertencem unicamente o SORCERER.  É de arrepiar quando o vocal solta o trecho “My name is Lucifer”. Todas as vezes que ouço essa composição acabo colocando-a no repeat por diversas vezes. O heavy metal pode ser compreendido em profundidade quando se escuta essa faixa. Tudo o que você precisa entender do estilo se encontra nessa música.

“Reign of the Reaper” traz uma pegada ainda mais épica e pesada. É uma música com uma roupagem mais densa e dramática, efeito esse causado muito pela interpretação matadora de Anders Engberg, que simplesmente apresentou nesse trabalho a melhor performance de sua carreira. Outra coisa que se destaca nessa música são as linhas de teclado, que criam uma base de grande emoção para a composição.  “Thy Kingdom Will Come” começa com uma pegada nas guitarras totalmente maravilhosa. O riff principal soa épico e ainda assim com grande energia.

De forma mais tranquila vem “Eternal Sleep”. A música tem uma vibe muito forte das faixas mais clássicas do Rising Force em sua fase mais clássica. Você realmente fica esperando a entrada das linhas ultra rápidas e clássicas de Malmsteen. Grande música. Os solos dessa música são completamente explosivos. Kristian Niemann e Peter Hallgren fizeram um trabalho monumental em todo o álbum, tanto em termos de riffs e bases de guitarra como nos solos de guitarra.

A aula de doom heavy metal continua com a excelente “Curse of Medusa”, que tem grandes linhas melódicas. Mas é em “Unveileing Blasphemy” que a coisa fica ainda mais séria. Interpretação vocal estelar e uma música com um feeling gigantesco.

Fiquei bem surpreso com “The Underworld”, cujo início soou como uma composição de black metal. Hahahaha Poderia muito bem estar em um álbum do Dimmu Borgir, mas isso dura apenas alguns segundos antes do épico doom metal tomar novamente o controle e reger a composição. O álbum finaliza com a pesadíssima “Break of Dawn”, outra música em que o vocal oferece uma interpretação magnífica e solos de guitarra que tem um sentimento absurdo.  Além da produção perfeita, o álbum conta com uma arte de capa totalmente no mesmo nível da música. Que o SORCERER ganhe todo o reconhecimento que merece e quem sabe aporte em terras brasileiras para apresentar sua música para os fãs brasileiros.

Vale salientar que “Reign of the Reaper” acabou de ganhar sua versão brasileira que foi lançada pela gravadora Nuclear Music, portanto não perca tempo e corra atrás da sua cópia. Você terá em mãos um dos melhores álbuns lançados esse ano.

SORCERER is not a new band on the world metal scene. The group was formed back in the 80s, but only lasted about four years, only returning to activity in 2010 and it was from then on that these Swedes really started to produce more intensely and release the four studio albums that make up their discography. Investing in doom/heavy metal of the highest quality, their music has evolved over time and after the release of the excellent “Lamenting of the Innocent” in 2020, SORCERER finally released their new album and I can assure you without any doubt that “Reign of the Reaper” is the best work released by the group.

“Reign of the Reaper” combines all the characteristics that make it such a good album. Firstly, the songwriting has reached an impressive level of maturity. I would venture to say that the band is in a very tricky situation, since going beyond it in terms of creative quality will be a very difficult job. Great melodies, top-notch choruses, incredible guitar solos and near-perfect vocal work make this album a milestone in the band’s career.

The first track on the album is the perfect calling card to introduce this work. “Morning Star” is one of the best metal songs I’ve heard in a long time. It’s very heavy and has a lyrical content that makes it even more powerful. There are clear influences from groups such as Black Sabbath from the post-Ozzy and Dio phase, as well as a lot of timeless Candlemass, but all done with an energy and strength that belongs solely to SORCERER.  It’s chilling when the vocalist unleashes “My name is Lucifer”. Every time I hear this composition I end up putting it on repeat several times. Heavy metal can be understood in depth when you listen to this track. Everything you need to understand about the style can be found in this song.

“Reign of the Reaper” is even more epic and heavy. It’s a song with a denser, more dramatic feel, and this effect is largely due to the killer performance of Anders Engberg, who simply gave the best performance of his career. Another thing that stands out in this song are the keyboard lines, which create a very emotional basis for the composition.  “Thy Kingdom Will Come” begins with a totally marvellous guitar riff. The main riff sounds epic and yet with great energy.

In a quieter way comes “Eternal Sleep”. The song has a very strong vibe of the more classic Rising Force tracks. You’re really waiting for Malmsteen‘s ultra-fast, classic lines to come in. Great song. The solos on this song are completely explosive. Kristian Niemann and Peter Hallgren did a monumental job on the whole album, both in terms of the riffs and guitar bases and the guitar solos.

The doom heavy metal lesson continues with the excellent “Curse of Medusa”, which has great melodic lines. But it’s in “Unveiling Blasphemy” that things get even more serious. Stellar vocal performance and a song with a gigantic feeling.

I was really surprised by “The Underworld”, whose beginning sounded like a black metal composition. Hahahaha It could well be on a Dimmu Borgir album, but that only lasts a few seconds before the epic doom metal takes over again and rules the composition. The album ends with the heavy “Break of Dawn”, another song in which the vocals offer a magnificent interpretation and guitar solos that have an absurd feeling.  In addition to the perfect production, the album’s cover art is totally on a par with the music. May SORCERER get all the recognition they deserve and perhaps come to Brazil to present their music to Brazilian fans.

It’s worth pointing out that “Reign of the Reaper” has just been released in Brazil on the Nuclear Music label, so don’t waste any time and get your copy. You’ll have in your hands one of the best albums released this year.
