Santa Catarina sempre teve um cenário forte no underground e com ótimas bandas. E o sul do estado também tem grandes bandas, por exemplo: Posthumous, Somberland, The Torment e Infernal War 666. Em Criciúma, tem também o Malice Garden, que está na ativa desde 1999. Fomos conversar com o vocalista, Orland Júnior, e ele contou um pouco mais sobre a história da banda e também do full length “Supreme Instinct Numb”.(2023)…
Saudações Orland Júnior! Seja bem-vindo ao The Old Coffin Spirit zine & Portal. Nos faça um breve resumo do início da banda e nos apresente a atual formação?
Orland Júnior: O Malice Garden começou em 1999 e lançamos duas demos, nos anos 2000 e 2002 que tiveram uma resposta muito positiva, abriram várias portas e a banda participou de vários festivais pelo Brasil, tendo oportunidade de dividir palco com grandes nomes do metal mundial como Vader, Dark Funeral, Marduk, Krisiun entre outras. Por motivos internos a banda ficou inativa por 13 anos voltando em 2018 a tocar nos palcos e lançando o Single da música S.i.n. em seguida o EP Denying Creation. Finalmente em 2023 lançamos nosso Full length intitulado “S.I.N. – Supreme Instinct Numb pela Eternal Hatred Records. Hoje nossa formação conta com Orland (V), Opressor (G), Henrique (G), John (B) e João (D).
Como foi ficar tanto tempo longe do underground e como o submundo aceitou essa volta? Da formação “original” só ficou você Orland Júnior e Opressor, certo?
Orland Júnior: Então foram 13 anos que o Malice Garden ficou adormecido, porém nós continuamos com nossos projetos e ativos no underground, eu montei o Orland Studio focado exclusivamente nas bandas do underground, produzi várias bandas e vários álbuns, tenho orgulho de ter produzido grandes álbuns dentro do underground. Eu e o Spok também tocamos guitarra por um tempo no Somberland. Os outros membros também continuaram tocando em outras bandas, então na real a gente nunca esteve fora, nunca paramos. E na real da formação original só sobrou o Spok que foi o fundador da banda.
Pois é, triste saber que uma banda do nível do Somberland (Rip) não está mais na ativa, no submundo. Mas deixaram dois full length e uma demo muito bons para a eternidade. Dark Silence of Death, (Demo/2016), Pest’Ology (2016) e (Just Flesh for the Worms) Orland Júnior, seu estúdio fica em que cidade? Poderia nos dizer quais bandas & álbuns você já produziu?
Orland Júnior: Sim, foram 3 excelentes registros, e eu gravei e produzi a demo e os dois álbuns no meu antigo estúdio. Além do Somberland também trabalhei com Posthumous, Alkanza, Distressed, Antichrist Holligans, Deadnation, They come Crowling, Sanctifier, The Metalian (Bélgica) e várias que não me vem na mente agora, e também perdi a conta de quantos álbuns eu gravei.
A cena do sul do estado é bem forte e tem várias bandas. Criciúma (SC) tem bandas muito boas como a Posthumous, Silent Empire e muitas outras. Como está a cena por aí relacionada ao metal, bandas, eventos e bares que apoiam o submundo?
Orland Júnior: A underground aqui continua forte, boas bandas, eventos com uma certa regularidade, temos o Trooper Bar que apoia a cena, e pessoas mais jovens nos eventos, mostrando que a cena está se renovando.
E como você vê a cena catarinense atualmente? O que você acha que melhorou em relação ao passado?
Orland Júnior: Muita coisa melhorou, hoje, além de termos muitos festivais e eventos, eles são muito bem estruturados, muitas bandas lançando material de altíssima qualidade, músicos de altíssima qualidade, temos selos daqui lançando material, hoje temos acesso a instrumentos de qualidade com facilidade, coisa que antigamente não se tinha. Creio que o que mais melhoramos foi em termos de estrutura e organização.
Em 2023, vocês lançaram o seu debut-CD “Supreme Instinct Numb” como está sendo a recepção para esse trabalho até agora?
Orland Júnior: O álbum foi lançado no exterior pela Eternal Hatred Records em parceria com a MS Metal Records aqui do Brasil, eles estão distribuindo na Europa e Estados Unidos e Japão, e pelo feedback da gravadora a aceitação por lá está indo muito bem, acima do que esperavam, só vou ficar devendo em quais países está indo melhor porque realmente não busquei esta informação. Aqui no Brasil superou todas as nossas expectativas tanto em vendas, como aceitação do público, e nas resenhas da mídia que todas deram notas altíssimas.
Que ótima notícia, cara! Eu gostei muito desse trabalho. E como rolou esse contato com o selo Eternal Hatred e a MS Metal Records? Então, eles fizeram um ótimo trabalho e vocês estão contentes com essa parceria?
Orland Júnior: Eles entraram em contato com a gente mostrando interesse no lançamento, entendemos que a proposta deles foi a melhor e então decidimos fechar, até o momento estão sim fazendo um bom trabalho.
Com a distribuição do full length ”S.I.N” nos Estados Unidos e Europa, existem planos de vocês fazerem uma tour por esses países em um futuro próximo?
Orland Júnior: Hoje isso seria nosso principal objetivo, mas claro isso exige organização e planejamento e estamos trabalhando nisso.
E vocês já tocaram muito por Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul e existem planos futuros para uma tour no Sudeste e Nordeste do Brasil para divulgar esse trabalho?
Orland Júnior: Então, nunca tocamos no Nordeste e temos muita vontade de conhecer os irmãos headbangers de lá, temos projetos para fazer uma turnê pelo Brasil no futuro, mas se houver interesse de momento de alguma produtora que quiser nos levar com certeza iremos
Voltando ao Full álbum. Eu gostei muito desse trabalho. Uma ótima produção em estúdio, uma arte de capa belíssima e ótimas músicas. Na minha opinião, o álbum é perfeito! Inclusive resenhei ele aqui no site e, se os amigos leitores quiserem dar uma conferida, é só fazer uma busca. Mas enfim, eu gostei muito das faixas: S.I.N., Poison Divine e Black Gold, faixas com bastante melodias, guitarras pesadas muito bem trabalhadas. O play todo tem muita identidade e essa mistura de peso, agressividade e melodia. Na sua opinião, quais são suas músicas preferidas desse trabalho e nos diga as influências por trás desse trabalho ou mesmo as influências da banda que moldaram a identidade de vocês ?
Orland Júnior: Então gravamos esse álbum no Estúdio Hurricane em Porto Alegre e foi produzido por Sebastian Carsin que dispensa apresentações , o conceito e arte da capa foi feito por L. Vulcan ex baixista do Posthumous e creio que o resultado final nos deu certeza que escolhemos as pessoas certas para trabalhar ao nosso lado. Minhas músicas preferidas do álbum são S.I.N., Poison Divine e Unholy Please Mysteria e fica difícil colocar uma influência principal, porque temos várias influências dentro do metal extremo. Mas creio que Dissection, Venom, Bathory são algumas.
Orland, em relação ao cenário Underground brasileiro o que você tem acompanhado ultimamente e que tem chamado sua atenção e indicaria aos nossos leitores?
O rland Júnior:Então eu creio que o submundo está forte vivo e ativo, com muitas bandas boas e muitas que merecem destaque, eu seria injusto dar só alguns nomes porque existe gente muito competente no meio e não são poucos, nosso problema ainda continua sendo o brasileiro dar muito mais valor para o que é de fora do que para as bandas daqui. Mas se você der uma rápida pesquisada na internet vai descobrir bandas que realmente merecem atenção.

Greetings Orland Júnior! Welcome to The Old Coffin Spirit zine & Portal. Give us a brief summary of the band’s beginnings and introduce us to the current lineup?
Orland Júnior: Malice Garden started in 1999 and we released two demos, in 2000 and 2002, which had a very positive response, opened several doors and the band participated in several festivals throughout Brazil, having the opportunity to share the stage with big names in world metal such as Vader, Dark Funeral, Marduk, Krisiun among others. For internal reasons, the band was inactive for 13 years, returning to play on stage in 2018 and releasing the single S.i.n. followed by the Denying Creation EP. Finally in 2023 we released our full length entitled “S.I.N. – Supreme Instinct Numb by Eternal Hatred Records. Today our lineup includes Orland (V), Opressor (G), Henrique (G), John (B) and João (D).
What was it like being away from the underground for so long and how did the underworld accept this return? Only you were left from the “original” lineup, Orland Júnior and Opressor, right?
Orland Júnior: So it was 13 years that Malice Garden was dormant, but we continued with our projects and active in the underground, I set up Orland Studio focused exclusively on underground bands, I produced several bands and several albums, I’m proud to have produced great albums within the underground. Spok and I also played guitar for a while in Somberland. The other members also continued playing in other bands, so in reality we were never out, we never stopped. And in reality, the only thing left of the original lineup was Spok, who was the founder of the band.
Well, it’s sad to know that a band of Somberland’s level (Rip) is no longer active in the underworld. But they left two very good full lengths and a demo for eternity. Dark Silence of Death, (Demo/2016), Pest’Ology (2016) and (Just Flesh for the Worms) Orland Júnior, which city is your studio in? Could you tell us which bands & albums you have produced?
Orland Júnior: Yes, there were 3 excellent records, and I recorded and produced the demo and the two albums in my old studio. In addition to Somberland, I also worked with Posthumous, Alkanza, Distressed, Antichrist Holligans, Deadnation, They come Crowling, Sanctifier, The Metalian (Belgium) and several that don’t come to mind now, and I also lost count of how many albums I recorded.
The scene in the south of the state is very strong and has several bands. Criciúma (SC) has very good bands like Posthumous, Silent Empire and many others. How is the scene out there related to metal, bands, events and bars that support the underworld?
Orland Júnior: The underground here remains strong, good bands, events with a certain regularity, we have the Trooper Bar that supports the scene, and younger people at events, showing that the scene is renewing itself.
And how do you see the scene in Santa Catarina today? What do you think has improved compared to the past?
Orland Júnior: A lot of things have improved, today, in addition to having many festivals and events, they are very well structured, many bands releasing very high quality material, very high quality musicians, we have labels here releasing material, today we have access to quality instruments with ease, something that was not available in the past. I believe that what we improved most was in terms of structure and organization.
In 2023, you released your debut CD “Supreme Instinct Numb” how has the reception been for this work so far?
Orland Júnior: The album was released abroad by Eternal Hatred Records in partnership with MS Metal Records here in Brazil, they are distributing it in Europe and the United States and Japan, and based on the label’s feedback, acceptance there is going very well, above than they expected, I’m just going to be left with which countries are doing better because I didn’t really look for this information. Here in Brazil, it exceeded all our expectations in terms of sales, public acceptance, and media reviews, which all gave very high marks.
That’s great news, man! I really liked this work. And how did this contact with the Eternal Hatred label and MS Metal Records happen? So, they did a great job and are you happy with this partnership?
Orland Júnior: They contacted us showing interest in the launch, we understood that their proposal was the best and so we decided to close, so far they are doing a good job.
With the distribution of the full length ”S.I.N” in the United States and Europe, are there any plans for you to tour these countries in the near future?
Orland Júnior: Today that would be our main objective, but of course this requires organization and planning and we are working on that.
And you have already played a lot in Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and are there future plans for a tour in the Southeast and Northeast of Brazil to promote this work?
Orland Júnior: So, we have never played in the Northeast and we really want to meet the headbanging brothers there, we have plans to tour Brazil in the future, but if there is interest at the moment from any producer that wants to take us, we will definitely go
Returning to the Full album. I really liked this work. Great studio production, beautiful cover art and great songs. In my opinion, the album is perfect! I even reviewed it here on the website and, if fellow readers want to check it out, just do a search. But anyway, I really liked the tracks: S.I.N., Poison Divine and Black Gold, tracks with a lot of melodies, very well crafted heavy guitars. The whole play has a lot of identity and this mix of weight, aggression and melody. In your opinion, what are your favorite songs from this work and tell us the influences behind this work or even the band’s influences that shaped your identity ?
Orland Júnior: So we recorded this album at Estúdio Hurricane in Porto Alegre and it was produced by Sebastian Carsin who needs no introduction, the concept and cover art was done by L. Vulcan, former bassist of Posthumous and I believe that the final result made us sure that we chose the right people to work alongside us. My favorite songs on the album are S.I.N., Poison Divine and Unholy Please Mysteria and it’s difficult to put a main influence on it, because we have several influences within extreme metal. But I believe that Dissection, Venom, Bathory are some.
Orland, in relation to the Brazilian Underground scene, what have you been following lately that has caught your attention and would you recommend to our readers?
Orland Júnior: So I believe that the underworld is alive and well, with many good bands and many that deserve to be highlighted. Brazilians give much more value to what comes from abroad than to bands here. But if you do a quick search on the internet you will discover bands that really deserve attention
