ATARAXY – The Last Mirror (Adv. CD 2022)

Definição de Ataraxia: Palavra grega que significa ausência de perturbação. Tamanha é sua importância na filosofia grega, que mesmo correntes distintas como o Epicurismo e o Estoicismo a perseguiam, objetivando alcançar, dentre outros, paz de espírito e felicidade. Encontrei o meu sonho de consumo filosófico: Atingir a Ataraxia.

 Os espanhóis do ATARAXY parecem tê-la atingido, imagino. Ao menos, considerando o impacto e a alta qualidade desse novo trabalho de nome “The Last Mirror”, que será lançado no dia 17 de junho, conjuntamente via “Me Saco un Ojo Records” e “Dark Descent Records”.

 Contextualizando, o quarteto de Zaragoza produz neste álbum um tipo majestoso e efetivo de Death Metal, carregado de Doom, que caminha ameaçadoramente a passos médios. Há uma preocupação contínua com a elaboração e manutenção de uma atmosfera sepulcral e estarrecedora, tendo como pano de fundo a aura dos escritos “Lovecraftianos”.

 A utilização criativa e inteligente de teclados desempenha papel essencial na criação e desenvolvimento dessa atmosfera mais carregada, méritos do guitarrista e vocalista “Javi”.

 A abordagem da banda soa, constantemente, como um híbrido bem-sucedido entre a riquíssima cena do Death Metal old school da Flórida e o Death Doom Europeu de alto nível, principalmente Finlandês e Holandês.

 Temos na intro “Presages” dois minutos que reforçam a importância da ambientação soturna para os caras. Soa exatamente como entrega o título, um agouro ou indício do pesadelo que está por vir, de sons extensos, intensos e opressivos.

 A ameaça se concretiza a partir de “The Bell that Constantly Sounds”, onde os primeiros destaques são os vocais aflitivos e convincentes do guitarrista e tecladista “Javi”. Entonações monstruosas cheias de personalidade, que não deixam de remeter a monstros como “John Tardy” e “Martin Van Drunen”.

 Apesar dos andamentos majoritariamente médios, há momentos de puro caos e rompantes de velocidade exacerbada, outros densos e arrastados, acompanhados de peso excruciante. As guitarras formam uma dupla com “Santi”, com resultado notável na condução dos riffs, harmonias e leads.

 O início de “Decline” empolga pela amostra pura e direta de Death Metal raiz, com riffs descomunais. Trabalho excelente da dupla responsável pela cozinha: O baixista “Edu” e o baterista “Viejo”. A passagem atmosférica final soa grandiosa, com fortíssima carga emocional, levando a faixa a uma conclusão tempestuosa, veloz e pesadíssima. Pergunto-me se o kit de bateria sobreviveu aos takes de gravação desse som.

 O Death Doom mais característico retorna em “Visions of Absence”, favorecendo-se muito das acelerações mortíferas, contrastando com as passagens morosas e tipicamente pútridas. Outra que mescla bem os elementos é “Under the Cypress Shadow”, nunca insistindo demasiadamente em um segmento ou outro. Talvez o ápice em termos de atmosfera tenha sido atingido nesse som, entre recortes brutais.

 “Silence” tem introdução instrumental climática, dramaticamente poderosa. O que se segue é uma passagem de pura devastação, habilmente absorvida por uma seção atmosférica introspectiva. O encerramento se dá com a contundente “A Mirror Reflects Our Fate”, cadenciada e colérica, que corta na carne lenta e progressivamente. Final perfeito para esse discão.

 Memorável álbum do ATARAXY. Não somente retoma os melhores momentos do seu primeiro “Revelations of the Ethereal”, de 2012, como acrescenta em peso e maturidade, concebendo uma atmosfera suntuosa e extremamente cativante.

 A mais alta recomendação aos fãs de KRYPTS (FIN), ASPHYX (HOL), OBITUARY (EUA), PURTENANCE (FIN), HOODED MENACE (FIN), HORRENDOUS (EUA), DEATH (EUA), GOREPHILIA (FIN).

Defining Ataraxy: Greek word meaning absence of disturbance. A decidedly relevant concept in Greek philosophy, something pursued by distinct currents such as Epicureanism and Stoicism, aiming to achieve, among others, peace of mind and happiness. Found my philosophical dream: Achieving Ataraxy.

 ATARAXY’s Spaniards seem to have achieved it, I reckon. At least, considering the impact and high quality of their new Opus titled “The Last Mirror”, to be released on June 17th as a joint effort by Labels “Me Saco un Ojo Records” and “Dark Descent Records”.

 Putting it into context, the Zaragoza based quartet produces on this album a majestic and effective brand of Death Metal, dripping with Doom, lurking slowly and ominously. There is an everlasting concern with maintaining a sepulchral and terrifying atmosphere, with Lovecraftian writings’ aura as the backdrop.

 Creative, skillful use of keyboards plays an essential role in creating and developing such dense, heavily charged ambient, courtesy of guitarist and vocalist “Javi”.

 The band’s approach consistently sounds like a successful hybrid between Florida’s rich old-school Death Metal scene and top-notch European Death Doom, mainly Finnish and Dutch.

 Aptly titled Intro “Presages” presents two minutes of heavy ambience, reinforcing how preponderant the gloomy tone is for these gentlemen. Indeed, it sounds like an omen to the impending nightmare, shaped with intense and oppressive tracks.

 The menace materializes with “The Bell that Constantly Sounds”, where first highlights are “Javi’s” distressing and convincing vocals. Monstrous intonations overflowing with personality, while still reminiscent of heavyweight champions “John Tardy” and “Martin Van Drunen”.

 Despite the more prevalent midtempo, there are flashes of chaos and bursts of frenzied speed, and ever massive, dense, and sluggish parts. Guitars form a duo with “Santi”, with notable result in the delivery of riffs, harmonies and leads.

 The beginning of “Decline” is both exciting and promising, a true and frank sample of good old Death Metal, loaded with huge riffs. Excellent work by the duo in charge of rhythms, bassist “Edu” and drummer “Viejo”. The final atmospheric passage sounds grand, with strong emotional charge, leading the track into a stormy, especially heavy conclusion.

 More characteristic Death Doom returns in “Visions of Absence“, highly benefiting from the deadly accelerations, contrasting with the slow and putrid passages. “Under the Cypress Shadow” is another to perfectly balance the elements, never insisting for too long on the same section. The most compelling atmosphere is achieved in this track, among brutal cuts.

 “Silence” has a dramatically powerful instrumental intro. What follows is a devastating section, deftly absorbed by an introspective, climatic part. Closure comes with the blunt “A Mirror Reflects Our Fate”, lethargic and punishing, slowly and progressively cutting into flesh. A perfect ending to such a fine record.

 “The Last Mirror” is a memorable ATARAXY album. It recaptures the band’s brightest moments of its 2012 debut “Revelations of the Ethereal”, while adding punch and maturity, forging a sumptuous and extremely captivating atmosphere.

 Highly recommended for fans of KRYPTS (FIN), ASPHYX (NED), OBITUARY (USA), PURTENANCE (FIN), HOODED MENACE (FIN), HORRENDOUS (USA), DEATH (USA), GOREPHILIA (FIN).
