VLK – Solastalgia I (CD 2023)

“Solastalgia I” talvez seja o álbum mais agressivo e impiedoso que tive a oportunidade de ouvir agora em 2023. Não estou aqui falando de bateria à velocidade da luz, riffs ultra velozes ou nada disso. Me refiro a uma banda de se coloca dentro do espectro do Experimental Post Black Metal e com isso, cria uma música que se apresenta em camadas densas e cheias de sentimentos diverso.

Não temos aqui tons de preto ou branco apenas, mas um prisma de cores diversas que se alternam enquanto as músicas são executadas. “Collapsology” vai do mais absoluto pandemônio ao um momento de calmaria que beira a loucura.

Quando “Indigenuity” se inicia, o lado experimental post se materializa em forma de um intrincado feeling que invoca uma cacofonia de vozes tribais e desemboca em uma composição que vai crescendo em intensidade. Os vocais conferem o toque de insanidade que transparece tão vívida. São mais de 10 minutos de uma viagem musical ácida e direta, mas que pode ceder a toques mais melancólicos. Quando a música vai se aproximando do fim é como se o mundo inteiro viesse abaixo em uma tempestade de violência.

“Interlude / Reflect” é um convite realmente a uma pausa e reflexão, um momento de calmaria que puxa o ouvinte do sentimento de desconforto que ainda o atinge após a audição da faixa anterior e prepara o caminho para a execução de “Ballad of the Sorrowful”, ainda que esse caminho vá se tornando mais obscuro.  A faixa é mais experimental em sua abordagem instrumental, mas com vocais mais sujos.  Ainda que o sentimento que permeia a música possua uma abordagem de puro desconforto, há elementos de melodias que são palpáveis. Ainda que sejam bandas completamente diferentes do ponto de vista musical, acredito que essa composição me trouxe à memória os dois primeiros álbuns dos finlandeses do Unholy, por causa da sensação de desesperança que se materializa durante a composição.

A próxima faixa “Extinction” começa com um clima quase cinematográfico, como uma trilha sonora de um filme de horror em que o momento de tensão antes da violência seja real, assim como o momento em que tudo vem abaixo em meio a gritos, violência e horror. É inegável que em alguns momentos a banda acabe soando como os velhos nomes do progressivo europeu, com arranjos fora do usual, mas com resultados hipnóticos. Acabou por ser a música que mais me chamou a atenção. Uma composição densa e cheia de feeling.  Finalmente “Loca Inferna” vem para encerrar de forma apocalíptica um álbum que ganha muito com a abordagem experimental, mas dentro de um limite.

É um álbum que de forma alguma é para qualquer um, em qualquer momento. A audição requer um estado de espírito específico, difícil de retratar aqui, mas que se faz necessário. Um excelente trabalho com toda a certeza.

“Solastalgia I” is perhaps the most aggressive and merciless album I’ve had the opportunity to listen to in 2023. I’m not talking about lightning-fast drums, ultra-fast riffs or anything like that. I’m talking about a band that places itself within the spectrum of Experimental Post Black Metal and with that, creates music that is layered, dense and full of diverse feelings.

We don’t just have shades of black or white here, but a prism of different colours that alternate as the songs are played. “Collapsology” goes from absolute pandemonium to a moment of calm bordering on madness.

When “Indigenuity” begins, the experimental post side materialises in the form of an intricate feeling that invokes a cacophony of tribal voices and leads to a composition that grows in intensity. The vocals add the touch of insanity that comes across so vividly. It’s more than 10 minutes of a musical journey that is acidic and direct, but which can give way to more melancholic touches. As the song draws to a close, it’s as if the whole world comes crashing down in a storm of violence.

“Interlude / Reflect” is a real invitation to pause and reflect, a moment of calm that pulls the listener out of the feeling of discomfort that still hits them after listening to the previous track and paves the way for the performance of “Ballad of the Sorrowful”, even if this path is becoming darker.  The track is more experimental in its instrumental approach, but with dirtier vocals.  Although the feeling that permeates the song is one of pure discomfort, there are elements of melody that are palpable. Although they are completely different bands from a musical point of view, I think this composition brought to mind the first two albums by the Finns Unholy, because of the sense of hopelessness that materialises during the composition.

The next track “Extinction” begins with an almost cinematic atmosphere, like the soundtrack to a horror film in which the moment of tension before the violence is real, as is the moment when everything comes crashing down amid screams, violence and horror. It’s undeniable that at times the band end up sounding like the old names in European progressive music, with unusual arrangements but hypnotic results. It turned out to be the song that caught my attention the most. A dense composition full of feeling.  Finally, “Loca Inferna” brings to an apocalyptic close an album that gains a lot from its experimental approach, but within limits.

It’s an album that is by no means for everyone, at any time. Listening to it requires a specific state of mind, which is difficult to portray here, but which is necessary. An excellent piece of work for sure.
