Os fãs dos thrashers do VIOLATOR tiveram que esperar 12 anos por um novo álbum de estúdio, já que o seu último full length “Scenarios of Brutality” foi lançado em 2013. Mas sendo bem sincero, acredito que todos irão perceber que a demora em lançar o novo trabalho acabou sendo mais positiva do que qualquer outra coisa.
“Unholy Contribution” é apenas o terceiro álbum oficial da banda e a demora em ser lançado acabou lapidando a música do grupo e posso afirmar que não há dúvida alguma que esse é o melhor trabalho já lançado pelo VIOLATOR.
Primeiramente é evidente que a principal característica desse novo trabalho é o quanto ele soa maduro em termos de composição. Se antes o VIOLATOR soasse até bobo em muitas partes de sua música, em “Unholy Contribution” isso não acontece de forma alguma. O thrash metal aqui recebeu toques mais agressivos e o que a banda criou foi um álbum que soa como uma marreta.
É possível perceber que influências mais extremas foram incorporadas à música da banda, mas sem descaracterizar a sua proposta. Em vários momentos o som soa tão extremo quanto poderia soar uma banda de thrash metal, nos fazendo lembrar de bandas como Sepultura (na fase do Beneath the Remains), Sacrifice, The Horde of Torment, Dark Angel, Exhorder, entre outras, inclusive algumas do death/thrash mais clássico. Isso faz a audição desse trabalho ser realmente uma experiência devastadora.
Para mim os vocais são um dos pontos de maior amadurecimento. Eu sinceramente não gostava nem um pouco do vocal gritado. Não acho que encaixava realmente no som e isso agora mudou. O vocal soa mais contido e por isso mesmo ele encaixou perfeitamente na música.
Falando das músicas em si, achei difícil destacar realmente uma música ou outra, já que o álbum é de um alto nível, mas vou abrir um espaço aqui para citar as faixas “Hang the Merchants of Illusion” (faixa de abertura) “Persecution Personality” (uma das melhores),“Destroy the Altar” e “Vengeance Storm” (faixa que me lembrou muito alguns climas criados pelo Sepultura.
Como ponto negativo achei que a altura do vocal está um pouco mais baixa do que o ideal, mas isso não compromete. A arte da capa é ok, mas diante de toda a parte lírica desenvolvida nesse álbum ela soa um pouco deslocada e até mesmo clichê. Talvez algo mais realista e cru seria mais contundente.
Mas independente disso, o VIOLATOR conseguiu entregar aqui um dos melhores álbuns do thrash metal nacional em muito, mas muito tempo. Maturidade, intensidade e diversificação são a marca de “Unholy Retribution”.

Fans of thrashers VIOLATOR had to wait 12 years for a new studio album, as their last full-length album, “Scenarios of Brutality”, was released in 2013. But to be honest, I believe everyone will realize that the delay in releasing the new album ended up being more positive than anything else.
“Unholy Contribution” is only the band’s third official album, and the delay in its release ended up refining the group’s music, and I can say without a doubt that this is the best work ever released by VIOLATOR.
First of all, it is evident that the main characteristic of this new work is how mature it sounds in terms of composition. If VIOLATOR used to sound silly in many parts of their music, in “Unholy Contribution” this is not the case at all. Thrash metal here has received more aggressive touches, and what the band has created is an album that sounds like a sledgehammer.
It is possible to notice that more extreme influences have been incorporated into the band’s music, but without detracting from their style. At various moments, the sound is as extreme as a thrash metal band could sound, reminding us of bands such as Sepultura (in the Beneath the Remains phase), Sacrifice, The Horde of Torment, Dark Angel, Exhorder, among others, including some of the more classic death/thrash bands. This makes listening to this work a truly devastating experience.
For me, the vocals are one of the most mature aspects. I honestly didn’t like the screaming vocals at all. I didn’t think it really fit the sound, but that has now changed. The vocals sound more restrained and therefore fit the music perfectly.
Speaking of the songs themselves, I found it difficult to really highlight one song or another, since the album is of such a high standard, but I’ll make room here to mention the tracks “Hang the Merchants of Illusion” (opening track), “Persecution Personality” (one of the best), “Destroy the Altar” and “Vengeance Storm” (a track that reminded me a lot of some of the moods created by Sepultura.
On the negative side, I thought the pitch of the vocals was a little lower than ideal, but that doesn’t compromise the album. The cover art is okay, but given all the lyrical development on this album, it sounds a little out of place and even cliché. Perhaps something more realistic and raw would be more striking.
Regardless, VIOLATOR has managed to deliver one of the best Brazilian thrash metal albums in a very, very long time. Maturity, intensity, and diversity are the hallmarks of “Unholy Retribution”.
