O SHED THE SKIN chega a oito anos de carreira com o seu melhor álbum lançado, o poderoso “The Forbidden Arts”. Trazendo membros de bandas como BLOOD OF CHRIST e INCANTATION em sua formação o death metal tradicional se mantém vivo e pulsante na veia desses veteranos do metal extremo americano. Conversamos com o baterista KYLE SEVERN sobre a banda, o novo álbum, filmes de terror… Confira a entrevista e ouça o novo álbum…

Olá Kyle, tudo bem? Bom, o SHED THE SKIN já existe há alguns anos, mas a banda não é muito conhecida aqui no Brasil. Você pode apresentar a banda à comunidade brasileira de metal extremo?
Kyle Severn: Em primeiro lugar, obrigado pela entrevista e pelo apoio ao Shed The Skin. Vou te dar uma versão curta do início da banda. Matt Sorg (Ringworm, Blood Of Christ) e eu tocamos juntos em um show em memória para nosso amigo Tom Rojack. Sua banda era o Blood Of Christ, de Cleveland, no início dos anos dos anos 90 e Matt costumava tocar em sua banda. Após o sucesso do show, ele e eu nos sentimos muito confortáveis em tocar juntos, então decidimos começar uma banda na mesma linha do Death Metal do início dos anos 90 e criar música fortemente influenciada por toda a música Death Metal com a qual crescemos, e o nome Shed The Skin é um título de uma música do BOC. Isso foi em 2012, agora nós estamos aqui, 8 anos depois e acabamos de lançar nosso terceiro álbum de estúdio completo. A Hellsheadbangers Records lançou todos os nossos materiais.
Você sempre foi conhecido por seu trabalho com o poderoso INCANTATION. Você ainda é membro do Incantation ou o SHED THE SKIN é sua banda principal agora? Como conciliar as duas bandas e suas outras atividades?
Kyle Severn: Eu ainda sou um membro em tempo integral do Incantation. Infelizmente o STS não toca tanto quanto gostaríamos, com todos os seus membros fazendo turnê com bandas, é difícil arranjar tempo, mas estamos sempre tentando tocar o máximo que podemos. Eu não faço mais turnês com o Incantation há alguns anos, então tenho tempo para vários projetos de bandas. Eu também toco com Estuary de Ohio, e acabei de gravar um novo álbum.
Tive a chance de ouvir e resenhar seu novo álbum “The Forbidden Arts” e cara, é um álbum de death metal massivo. Na minha opinião é o seu melhor lançamento até agora, mas com algumas influências diferentes. Houve alguma diferença no processo de composição deste álbum?
Kyle Severn: Obrigado, sim, estamos muito felizes com esse álbum. Eu não diria que tentamos algo diferente, o processo de criação tem sido o mesmo desde a primeira música que escrevemos, mas acho que Matt (que escreve 99% dos riffs) acabou de encontrar o estilo do Shed The Skin.
Ainda sobre o novo álbum. Está claro para mim que a sua música agora é mais pesada e complexa. Às vezes e algumas músicas me lembraram das estruturas musicais do Immolation e essa complexidade criou um álbum realmente poderoso. Podemos assumir que é um novo nível musical para o trabalho de SHED THE SKIN?
Kyle Severn: Você sabe que eu realmente não vejo a grande diferença nos discos, mas isso é um grande elogio. Na verdade, acabamos de ensaiar para o próximo álbum e sinto que essas novas músicas são tão intensas quanto The Forbidden Arts.
Tive a chance de ver o STS ao vivo durante o Maryland Deathfest 2016 e foi ótimo. Se não me engano, um dos membros teve um problema pessoal e não estava lá. Na sua opinião em que ambiente o SHED THE SKIN é melhor? Vivo ou em estúdio? Eu tenho que admitir que a banda ao vivo era muito pesada e eu só posso imaginar o quão poderosas as novas canções soam vivas.
Kyle Severn: Muito foda que você tenha visto esse show. Na verdade, esse foi nosso primeiro show que tocamos ao vivo, que ótima maneira de começar os shows da banda ao vivo. Não, essa era a banda completa. Obviamente, temos um tecladista nas gravações de estúdio, mas suas partes são apenas algums pequenos pedaços em uma ou duas músicas, então nem sempre o temos tocando ao vivo conosco. Ele apenas acentua algumas partes aqui e ali. Acho que a banda é definitivamente mais poderosa ao vivo, todos nós estamos em turnê e tocando ao vivo há 30 anos, então todos nós sabemos como trabalhar o palco, além disso essa música precisa ser tocada bem alto !!!
(N.d.R: Agora eu lembro que foi o Incantation que teve um membro que não pôde tocar por problemas pessoais).
The Forbidden Arts “tem uma capa incrível e isso é uma marca registrada da banda. Os outros álbuns tinham o mesmo tipo de arte em preto e branco. Quem é o artista por trás disso?
Kyle- Sim, é o “ Human Furnace ”! Ele criou o logotipo e fez todos os 3 álbuns até agora. Nós o queríamos desde o início porque ele também desenhou as artes do Blood Of Christ nos anos 90. Então é tudo uma grande família feliz do metal.
Sempre vejo suas fotos no Facebook durante as convenções de terror. Eu realmente posso supor que você é um grande fã de terror. Quais são seus filmes de terror favoritos?
Kyle Severn: Sim, adoro filmes de terror, adoro estar no ambiente de terror. Sou principalmente um fã do terror dos anos 70 e 80, de tudo, desde sexploitation, filmes grindhouse, slashers, criaturas e assim por diante … Mas ainda assim o top 10 de todos os tempos tem que ir para John Carpenters The Thing, Hellraiser, The Shining, The Omen, Zombie, Dawn of the Dead, The Fog, The Beyond…. Clássicos !
Você não é mais um baterista em turnê com o Incantation. O que aconteceu? É difícil para você conciliar as longas viagens com sua vida pessoal? É realmente uma droga para nós, fãs de outros países.
Kyle Severn: Sim, eu me aposentei das turnês cerca de 2 anos atrás. Eu passei muitos anos na estrada, e todos esses anos eu tive uma esposa, 2 filhos e uma empresa de construção, e de alguma forma eu ainda conseguia administrar tudo na estrada, mas nos últimos anos está ficando mais difícil para mim fazer isso, especialmente quando meu negócio de construção está crescendo, então tivemos a sorte de encontrar alguns bateristas realmente ótimos para fazer as longas turnês para mim, e recentemente encontramos Carlie Koryn para ser o meu substitute em tempo integral nas tours, ele é um cara jovem que entende o estilo do Incantation de tocar bateria. Eu ainda estou fazendo o trabalho do guerreiro de fim de semana, mas a maioria das turnês do Incantation são longas atualmente, o que é ótimo para a banda, eles precisam estar na estrada.
Durante o MDF 2016 eu vi você assistindo o show do SATAN e curtindo muito como um verdadeiro fã. Às vezes é muito difícil ver caras de bandas curtindo outras bandas, algo que é bem estranho pra mim, porque se eu gostar de uma banda e tiver a chance de curtir o show dele eu farei. Tenho 47 anos e isso ainda é muito importante para mim. Como é para você dividir o palco com seus “heróis” da cena do metal? Alguma história engraçada para compartilhar conosco?
Kyle Severn: Sim, Satan foi muito bom naquela noite, eu nunca vi eles ao vivo antes, então foi incrível para mim. Prós e Contras de tocar em Festivais, Prós- você tem a chance de tocar e dividir o palco com outras grandes bandas, Contras- outras grandes bandas que você quer ver tocando em outro palco quando estiver tocando … hahah … Uma história legal … Então, tocamos no HellFest na França e John e eu estávamos nos bastidores do palco maior (tocamos no palco menor) e assim que estávamos passando o Deep Purple estava subindo no palco, então nos juntamos ao grupo deles caminhando e continuamos caminhando com acabamos na frente do palco e no centro e pensamos “OH, merda, o que vamos fazer?” a próxima coisa que ouvimos foi “Ei, tire aqueles idiotas do palco” hahah … foi um momento legal que nunca vou esquecer hahah
Bem, o Brasil não é um país tão fácil de se fazer tours, mas seria ótimo vê-lo aqui novamente com o Incantation ou Shed the Skin. Alguma chance? Qual a sua real impressão sobre o nosso país no que diz respeito à cena do metal?
Kyle Severn: Eu adoro ir e tocar no Brasil. Como você sabe, eu estive aí muitas vezes tanto com o Incantation quanto com o Acheron . Os shows e fãs são alguns dos mais doentios e dedicados do mundo. Eu adoraria levar o Shed The Skin lá um dia, espero que possamos tocar em um festival ou algo assim.
Tenho certeza que é muito cedo para falar sobre um novo álbum, mas vocês já estão trabalhando nisso? Talvez usando o momento pandêmico para criar músicas.
Kyle Severn: Sim, como mencionei em uma pergunta anterior. Já temos 10-12 músicas novas e demonizamos 8 delas nos últimos dois dias.

SHED THE SKIN reaches an eight-year career with its best album released, the powerful “The Forbidden Arts”. Bringing members of bands like BLOOD OF CHRIST and INCANTATION to their formation, traditional death metal remains alive and pulsating in the veins of these veterans of American extreme metal. We talked to drummer KYLE SEVERN about the band, the new album, horror movies … Check out the interview and listen to the new album …
Hello Kyle, what´s up? Well, SHED THE SKIN has been around for some years now, but the band isn´t very known here in Brazil. Can you introduce the band to the Brazilian extreme metal community?
Kyle- First off thanks allot for the interview and supporting Shed The Skin. I’ll give you the short version of the bands inception. Matt Sorg (Ringworm, Blood Of Christ) and I played together in a remembrance show for our friend Tom Rojack . His band was Blood Of Christ from Cleveland from the early 90’s and Matt used to play in his band. After the success of the show he and I felt real comfortable jamming together, so we decided to start a band in the same vein of early 90’s Death Metal and create music heavily influenced from all the Death Metal Music we grew up with, and the name Shed The Skin is a BOC song title. That was in 2012, now here we are 8 years later and we just released our 3rd full length studio album. Hellsheadbangers Records has released all our materials.
You were always known because your work with the mighty INCANTATION. Are you still a member of Incantation or is SHED THE SKIN your main band now? How to conciliate both bands and your other activities?
Kyle- I am still fulltime member of Incantation. Unfortunately STS doesn’t get to play out as much as we would like too, with all its members being in touring bands it’s tough to make the time, but we are always trying to play out as much as we can. I don’t tour anymore with Incantation as of a few years ago, so I have time for multiple band projects. I also currently play with Estuary from Ohio, and just recorded a new record as well.
I had the chance to listen and review your new album “The Forbidden Arts” and dude, it´s a massive death metal album. In my opinion it´s your best release so far, but with some different influences. Was there any difference in the writing process to this album?
Kyle- Thanks allot, yea we are really happy with this record. I wouldn’t say we tried anything different, the creation process has been the same since first song we wrote, but I think Matt ( who writes 99% of the riffs) has just found the Shed The Skin style.
Still about the new album. It´s clear to me that your music now is heavier and more complex. Sometimes and some songs reminded me the Immolation musical structures and this complexity created a really powerful album. Can we assume that it´s a new musical level to SHED THE SKIN work?
Kyle- Ya know I don’t really see the big difference in the records, but that’s a great compliment. We actually just got done with rehearsals for the next record and I feel these new songs are just as intense as The Forbidden Arts.
I had the chance to see STS alive during the 2016 Maryland Deathfest and it was great. If I am not wrong one of the members had a personal issue and wasn´t there. In your opinion in which environment is SHED THE SKIN better ? Alive or in studio? I have to admit that the band alive was really heavy and I can only think how powerful the news songs sounds alive.
Kyle- That’s awesome you got to see that show. That was actually our first show we played live, what a great way to start the bands live gigs. No that was the full band. We obviously have a keyboardist on the studio records, but his parts are just on a couple small areas in a song or two so we don’t always have him play live with us. He just accents a few parts here and there. I think the band is definitely more powerful live, we all have been touring and playing live for 30 years, so we all know how to work the stage, besides this music needs to be played loud!!!
“The Forbidden Arts” has an amazing cover art and it´s a trademark of the band. The other albums had the same kind of black and white art. Who is the artist behind it?
Kyle- Yes that would be “Human Furnace”! He created the logo and has done all 3 records so far. We wanted him from the beginning because he also drew the Blood Of Christ art back in the 90’s. So it’s all one big happy metal family.
I always see your pictures on Facebook during Horror Conventions. I really can assume you are a great fan of horror. What are your favorite horror movies?
Kyle- Yes I love horror films, I love being in the horror environment. I’m mainly a fan of 70’s and 80’s horror, everything from sexploitation, grindhouse films, slashers, creatures and so on… But still alltime top 10’s have to go to John Carpenters The Thing, Hellraiser, The Shining, The Omen, Zombie, Dawn of the Dead, The Fog, The Beyond…. Classics
You are not a touring drummer with Incantation anymore. What happened? Is it difficult for you to conciliate the long travels with your personal life? It really sucks for us, fans from other countries.
Kyle- Yea I retired from touring 2 years ago. I had spent allot of years on the road, and all those years I had a wife, 2 kids and a construction business, and somehow I was able to still manage it all from the road, but in the recent years it’s just been getting harder for me to do, especially when my construction business has been growing, so we have been fortunate to have been able to find a couple really great drummers to do the long tours for me, and recently we have found Carlie Koryn to be my fulltime live drummer, he’s great young dude that understands the Incantation style of drumming. I’m still doing the weekend warrior stuff, but most Incantation tours are long stuff these days, which is great for the band, they need to be staying out on the road.
During the 2016 MDF I saw you watching the SATAN concert and really enjoying like a true fan. Sometimes is really difficult see guys from the bands enjoying other bands, something that is really weird for me, because if I like a band and I had the chance to enjoy his concert I will do it. I am 47 years old and it is still very important to me. How is for you to share the stage with your “heroes” from the metal scene? Any funny story to share with us?
Kyle- Yes Satan was so fucking great that night, I have never got to see them live before so it was awesome for me. Pros and Cons to playing Festivals, Pros- you have a chance to play and share the stage with other great bands, Cons- other great bands you want to see playing on another stage when you are playing..hahah… One cool story… So we played HellFest in France and John and I were backstage of the bigger stage ( we played the smaller stage) and just as we were walking by Deep Purple was walking up on stage so we just joined their group in walking and as we kept walking with them we ended up on the stage front and center and were like “ OH SHIT now what do we do?” next thing we hear is “ hey Get Those Assholes off the stage” hahah… was a cool moment I’ll never forget hahah
Well, Brazil is not so easy to touring around, but is should be great to see you here again with Incantation or Shed the Skin. Any chances? What is your real impression about our country concerning the metal scene?
Kyle- I love going and playing Brazil. As you know I’ve been there many times for both Incantation and Acheron.. The shows and fans are some of the sickest and most dedicated fans on the earth.. I would love to bring Shed The Skin there some time, hopefully we can play a festival or something at least.
I am sure is really early to talk about a new album, but are you guys already working on it? Maybe using the pandemic moment to create music.
Kyle- Yes, as I mentioned in an earlier question. We have 10-12 new songs already, and we demoned 8 of them just the past two days.
