SERPENT SPAWN – Crypt of Torment (Adv. MCD 2022)

No universo da música extrema, poucas sensações são tão gratificantes quanto a de ouvir material inédito produzido por quem entende do riscado. O SERPENT SPAWN é um nome completamente novo, mas o trio que o integra é altamente qualificado, com longo histórico na cena Death Metal da Alemanha.

 A formação conta com “Martin Witchskinner” (BLOOD – Vocais, guitarras e baixo), “Rob Wenglorz” (Ex-BLOOD, ex-DAWN – guitarras) e “Markus Winterstein” (MALAPHAR – Bateria), todos ligados aos primórdios do metal extremo germânico, final dos anos 80 e início dos 90.  

 Foi com esse currículo respeitável que os três veteranos se uniram, sob a alcunha SERPENT SPAWN, para registrar o primeiro mini álbum “Crypt of Torment”, previsto para o final deste mês via “Iron Bonehead Productions”, em CDs, vinil e fitas cassete.

 O resultado é uma breve amostra, de apenas quinze minutos, de Death Metal em seu estado mais bruto e autêntico, impiedoso, não adulterado e isento de firulas ou truques. A produção é ótima, tudo soa real e urgente, com peso mensurável em toneladas.

 O tema de abertura “Crypt of Torment” possui a atmosfera matadora e o sangue nos olhos dos álbuns pioneiros do estilo. Som acelerado, direto, atroz e dotado dos devidos níveis de crueza, no entanto fundamentando-se em riffs efetivos, vocais certeiros e percussão bestial, fazendo-se envolvente todo o tempo.

 Na sequência, o trio diminui a velocidade na introdução de “Conquering the Trinity”, apenas para atingir níveis, até então inéditos, de carnificina. A nitidez dos instrumentos impressiona, tornando a faixa absolutamente letal. Impossível um fanático por Death Metal raiz não se deliciar com essa desgraceira.

 “Carnage Divine” segue com a pegada extremamente visceral, abusando de riffs viciantes e passagens de ritmo médio, onde as vocalizações demoníacas de “Witchskinner” se sobressaem em meio a um instrumental cirurgicamente preciso, bárbaro e impregnado de malevolência.

 Fechando o mini álbum, mais um exemplar inequívoco de violência desmedida: “Skinned and Gutted”, típica faixa para expulsar visitas indesejadas ou iniciar uma treta perene com aquele vizinho mala, que só ouve lixo. Som ríspido, truculento e inflexível, além de bem tocado demais.

 Excepcional apresentação ao mundo do SERPENT SPAWN. Espero que venha logo um álbum de estúdio, e que não se perca nada da agressividade e ímpeto contidos neste aniquilador EP.

In the universe of extreme music, few sensations can be as enjoyable as listening to fresh material produced by seasoned musicians, who really know their shit. SERPENT SPAWN is a completely new name, but the trio behind it is highly qualified, with a long history in the German Death Metal scene.

Lineup includes “Martin Witchskinner” (BLOOD – Vocals, Guitars and Bass), “Rob Wenglorz” (Ex-BLOOD, ex-DAWN – Guitars) and “Markus Winterstein” (MALAPHAR – Drums), all linked to the beginnings of Germanic extreme metal, back in late 80’s and early 90’s.

With such a respectable resume, the three veterans gathered under the moniker SERPENT SPAWN to record their first release, mini album “Crypt of Torment”, scheduled for the end of June via “Iron Bonehead Productions”, on CDs, vinyl and cassette tapes.

The result is a brief, fifteen-minute sample of old school Death Metal at its most raw state, authentic, vicious, unadulterated, and 100% free of gimmicks. The production is great, everything sounds real and urgent, with heaviness only measurable in tons.

The opening theme “Crypt of Torment” packs the killer atmosphere and vehemence of the style’s pioneering albums. Breakneck speed, straightforward, atrocious, and impregnated with proper levels of rawness, however based on effective riffs, gruesome vocals and bestial percussion, catchy and engaging thoroughly.

The trio then slows down at the beginning “Conquering the Trinity,” only to perpetrate previously unheard-of levels of carnage. The clarity of all instruments sounds impressive, it’s a truly lethal track. It’s nearly impossible for an old school Death Metal fanatic not to be delighted.

 “Carnage Divine” follows with an extremely visceral feel, offering addictive riffs and mid-tempo passages, where the demonic vocalizations of “Witchskinner” stand out amidst a surgically precise instrumental, barbaric, and impregnated with profane malevolence.

 Closing the mini album, another unmistakable example of sheer violence: “Skinned and Gutted”, perfect theme to kick out any unwanted visitors, or start a perennial beef with a prick neighbor who keeps listening to garbage. Harsh sound, truculent and inflexible, but also extremely well played.

An exceptional presentation of SERPENT SPAWN’s potential. I hope they come up with a studio album soon, keeping all the aggression and impetus contained in this annihilating EP.
