Se não me falha a memória a primeira vez que ouvi falar do SADUS foi em algum momento no início dos anos 90 quando em uma Rock Brigade apareceu um pequeno artigo falando sobre os caras. Se não me engano era uma sessão chamada “Up Coming”, que apresentava novos nomes do metal mundial. Falava-se muito dos caras utilizando uma comparação com o Slayer e seu clássico absoluto “Reign in Blood”.

Obviamente era uma época em que se alguém falasse que a banda era uma pancadaria, a gente já movia montanhas para conseguir o som e ouvir. Eu consegui uma gravação do álbum “Illusions” na loja Heavy Metal Rock e realmente o que chamou atenção logo de cara foi a violência com que a banda tocava. Era absurdamente intenso e direto, sem frescuras.

Outra coisa que era realmente extremo eram os vocais de Darren Travis, que era rasgado ao extremo. Quem conheceu na época a banda por sua demo tape “Death to Posers” e pelo debut álbum “Illusions” sabe que a agressividade e energia da banda era realmente em outro nível. Em 1990 foi lançado o também matador “Swallowed in Black”, que já tirava o pé do acelerador um pouco e deixava mais evidente a técnica musical envolvida.

Pelo menos para mim, o interesse foi diminuindo após esse segundo álbum, já que cada vez mais a complexidade se tornou importante e aquela energia primitiva ia ficando no passado. Passados agora quase quatro décadas desde a criação da banda, o SADUS retorna com um novo álbum intitulado “The Shadow Inside”, o primeiro desde “Out for Blood”, de 2006.

“The Shadow Inside” mostra um SADUS que segue dois caminhos. Em algumas músicas é possível perceber aquela velha dinâmica do thrash metal mais violento, com riffs mais secos e diretos e em outras músicas a sonoridade se torna menos direta, mais complexa e alguns momentos, infelizmente, um tanto burocráticas.

As três primeiras faixas do álbum, “First Blood”, “Scorched and Burnt” e “It´s the Sickness” formam aquele cartão de visitas realmente selvagem. A primeira faixa tem um riff matador, que te faz lembrar do velho Dark Angel. Música realmente energética e com a cara da banda. Já “Scorched and Burnt” é mais contida, mas carregada de ódio. Riffs pesadíssimos guiam a composição. A terceira une as qualidades das duas primeiras.

“Ride the Knife” é uma faixa equilibrada em termos de calmaria e velocidade, mas ela fica em um meio termo em questão de energia contagiante. Apenas uma boa faixa, mas não empolga. Há mais coisas interessantes quando a faixa “Anarchy” se inicia. O riff inicial é nervoso e intrincado e o fato de ser uma faixa bem mais curta, contribui para que ela seja um destaque. A próxima faixa é “The Devil in Me” e essa faixa é a que menos me interessou. Possui alguns riffs e andamentos de bateria que a fazem soar meio moderna e o fato de ficar se contendo boa parte do tempo não ajuda em uma mudança de perspectiva. “Pain” também sofre do mesmo problema da faixa anterior.

As coisas melhoram mais quando “No Peace” se inicia. O riff central é cortante e a música tem um resultado melhor. “New Beginnings” é uma curta instrumental e ao meu ver, soou deslocada e sem muita função em meio ao álbum.

O álbum é encerrado com a faixa título que recupera um pouco da energia da primeira metade desse trabalho. Apesar de ser uma música que foca muito no peso e em riffs mais dramáticos e funciona bem. “The Shadow Inside” é um bom álbum, com boa produção e uma excelente arte de capa, mas peca pela inconstância. A primeira metade é mais interessante do que a segunda. Há ideias matadoras e outras nem tanto.

If memory serves me right, the first time I heard of SADUS was sometime in the early 90s when a short article appeared in Rock Brigade Magazine talking about the guys. If I’m not mistaken, it was a section called “Up Coming“, which featured new names in world metal. There was a lot of talk about the guys using a comparison with Slayer and their absolute classic “Reign in Blood”. Obviously, it was a time when if someone said the band was a blast, we’d move mountains to get hold of it and listen to it. I got hold of a recording of the album “Illusions” in the Heavy Metal Rock shop and what really struck me was the violence with which the band played. It was absurdly intense and direct, with no frills.

Another thing that was really extreme was Darren Travis’ vocals, which were ripping to the extreme. Anyone who knew the band at the time from their demo tape “Death to Posers” and their debut album “Illusions” knows that the band’s aggression and energy was really on another level. 1990 saw the release of the also killer “Swallowed in Black”, which took the foot off the gas a little and made the musical technique involved more evident.

At least for me, interest waned after this second album, as complexity became more and more important and that primitive energy faded into the background. Now that almost four decades have passed since the band’s inception, SADUS returns with a new album entitled “The Shadow Inside”, their first since 2006’s “Out for Blood”.

“The Shadow Inside” shows a SADUS that follows two paths. In some songs you can feel that old dynamic of more violent thrash metal, with drier and more direct riffs, and in other songs the sound becomes less direct, more complex and at times, unfortunately, somewhat bureaucratic.

The first three tracks on the album, “First Blood”, “Scorched and Burnt” and “It’s the Sickness” form that truly savage calling card. The first track has a killer riff that reminds you of the old Dark Angel. It’s a really energetic song with the band’s personality. “Scorched and Burnt” is more restrained, but full of hate. Heavy riffs guide the composition. The third song combines the qualities of the first two.

“Ride the Knife” is a well-balanced track in terms of calm and speed, but it falls somewhere in the middle in terms of infectious energy. Just a good track, but not exciting. There are more interesting things when the track “Anarchy” starts. The opening riff is edgy and intricate and the fact that it’s a much shorter track makes it a highlight. The next track is “The Devil in Me” and this is the one that interested me the least. It has a few riffs and drumbeats that make it sound a bit modern and the fact that it keeps itself contained a lot of the time doesn’t help with a change of perspective. “Pain” also suffers from the same problem as the previous track.

Things get better when “No Peace” starts. The central riff is cutting and the song has a better result. “New Beginnings” is a short instrumental and, to my mind, it sounds out of place and doesn’t serve much of a purpose on the album.

The album closes with the title track, which recaptures some of the energy of the first half of the album. Although it’s a song that focuses a lot on heaviness and more dramatic riffs, it works well. “The Shadow Inside” is a good album, with good production and excellent cover art, but it’s marred by inconsistency. The first half is more interesting than the second. There are some killer ideas and others not so much.
