A banda Pombajira está de volta com seu segundo álbum, lançado por meio de uma parceria entre gravadoras. O disco anterior trazia fortes influências de Bathory e Celtic Frost; já neste novo trabalho, as referências da banda se expandem consideravelmente. É possível ouvir elementos que vão do rock ‘n’ roll ao black metal.
Embora todas as músicas contribuam para a construção de uma identidade própria, cada uma possui características bastante distintas. O que prevalece é um andamento mais lento, por vezes quase hipnótico, como em “Nothing but Death”. As influências do occult rock setentista de Coven, além de Celtic Frost (claro!), Saint Vitus e Cathedral, são muito bem mescladas para criar a atmosfera do álbum.
“O Jugo da Dor” acelera um pouco o ritmo e apresenta um refrão que já consigo imaginar sendo cantado em coro durante os shows ao vivo.
“Ride with the Deathlike” retorna ao clima lento e lúgubre, com uma forte pegada stoner. Trata-se de uma faixa instrumental curta que abre caminho para “No Light Will Shine”, música que traz um baixo bastante proeminente, uma vibe tipicamente setentista e algumas passagens que remetem tanto ao Master’s Hammer quanto ao Root, banda da qual o Pombajira faz um cover neste disco.
A faixa-título, “Sabbatical Spells”, mistura black metal com hard rock dos anos 70 de forma bastante natural. Já “Entre a Morte e a Ressurreição” apresenta uma pegada que transita entre rock, hard rock e heavy metal, com algumas pitadas de Venom.
Para encerrar o álbum, os caras resolveram prestar homenagem ao grande Root com um cover de “Píseň pro Satana”. O resultado ficou excelente. Não faço ideia se Élson pronunciou tudo corretamente em tcheco, mas, ao que tudo indica, sim!
Apesar de todas as influências mencionadas — amplamente conhecidas e familiares ao público —, a banda consegue criar uma sonoridade própria de maneira criativa e interessante. A vocalização, alternando letras em inglês e português, é outro elemento que contribui significativamente para o resultado final, tornando o som mais agressivo, sombrio e tétrico.
“Sabbatical Spells” é um álbum altamente recomendável. Os fãs dos estilos citados certamente encontrarão muito material para apreciar, e quem ainda não conhece a banda provavelmente terá uma surpresa bastante positiva.

Pombajira return with their second album, released through a partnership between record labels. While the previous record was heavily influenced by Bathory and Celtic Frost, this new effort sees the band’s influences broaden considerably. Elements ranging from rock ’n’ roll to black metal can be heard throughout the album.
Although all the songs contribute to a distinctive identity, each track has its own particular characteristics. What predominates is a slower pace, sometimes almost hypnotic, as heard in “Nothing but Death”. The influences of 1970s occult rock acts such as Coven, along with Celtic Frost (of course!), Saint Vitus, and Cathedral, are skillfully blended to create the album’s atmosphere.
“O Jugo da Dor” picks up the tempo and features a chorus that I can already imagine being sung along to by audiences during live performances.
“Ride with the Deathlike” returns to a slow and gloomy mood, with a strong stoner rock vibe. It is a short instrumental piece that paves the way for “No Light Will Shine”, a track driven by a prominent bass line, a distinctly seventies atmosphere, and passages that bring to mind both Master’s Hammer and Root, the latter being the band covered by Pombajira on this album.
The title track, “Sabbatical Spells”, naturally combines black metal with 1970s hard rock influences. Meanwhile, “Entre a Morte e a Ressurreição” moves through rock, hard rock, and heavy metal territory, with a few touches of Venom thrown into the mix.
To close the album, the band pay tribute to the mighty Root with a cover of “Píseň pro Satana”. The result is excellent. I have no idea whether Élson pronounced everything correctly in Czech, but judging by the outcome, it certainly sounds like he did!
Despite all the influences mentioned above—many of them widely known and familiar to metal fans—Pombajira manage to create a sound of their own in a creative and compelling way. The vocal approach, alternating between English and Portuguese lyrics, is another element that significantly enhances the overall result, making the music more aggressive, dark, and sinister.
“Sabbatical Spells” comes highly recommended. Fans of the styles mentioned above will find plenty to enjoy here, while those who have yet to discover the band are likely to be pleasantly surprised.
