PAYBACK – Violent Ecstasy (CD 2023)

Minas Gerais é um dos mais ícônicos e metálicos estados do Brasil. Não é a toa que desse estados saíram dois dos maiores nomes do metal do mundo: Sepultura e Sarcófago. Enquanto ambas bandas estava na ativa e executando sua música o mundo se rendia ao talento brasileiro de cria música pesada com qualidade. Os mineiros do PAYBACK são de uma geração bem posterior, com a banda sendo criada apenas em 2011. Mas essa “contemporaneidade” do grupo não o afasta de suas raízes e o thrash/death aqui é tocado com potência e raiva.

“Violent Ecstasy” é o segundo álbum oficial do PAYBACK, depois do debut álbum intitulado “Padecer”, lançado em 2020. Poderia dizer que em termos de extremismo o som da banda não se baseia no thrash metal mais trampado. Tudo flerta com mais violência. Em alguns momentos os riffs de guitarra, como em “Sociedade do Cansaço” tem uma pegada meio Destruction antigo. O lado mais thrash da banda tem muito da sonoridade brasileira do estilo nos anos 80 e 90.

“Sarcastic Serenity” é uma das melhores músicas do álbum e eu fiquei pensando muito na sonoridade do velho Attômica e do Executer, mas com um pouco mais de agressão musical envolvida. Quando “God Profit” começa com seu riff incendiando tudo você fica com a impressão de que esses caras realmente tem um som muito promissor nas mãos. É uma música poderosa.

Misséis são disparados com a brutal “Blessed (or Cursed)”, uma faixa que já desde o seu início vai rasgando tudo com um andamento sem piedade alguma. Outra faixa que curti muito foi “Frontline”, que possui linhas de guitarra que lembrma o velho Sacrifice do Canadá. Um excelente trabalho executado pelos guitarristas Nicolas e Igor.

Não poderia deixar de citar a homenagem que a banda fez aos conterrâneos do THE MIST, com uma versão para a faixa “Flying Saucers in the Sky”, que ficou realmente matadora. Os dois primeiros álbuns do The Mist são absolutos clássicos e merecem um maior reconhecimento. Justo e fudido tributo.

“Violent Ecstasy” é um álbum com uma produção excelente. Os instrumentos soam claros e pesados, algo muito necessário ao thrash metal. Um trabalho com qualidade e pegada, que carrega com orgulho a bandeira do metal brasileiro e mineiro.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Minas Gerais is one of the most iconic and metallic states in Brazil. It’s no wonder that two of the world’s biggest metal names came out of this state: Sepultura and Sarcofago. While both bands were active and performing their music, the world surrendered to Brazil’s talent for creating quality heavy music. PAYBACK are from a much later generation, with the band only being created in 2011. But the group’s “contemporaneity” doesn’t distance them from their roots, and the thrash/death here is played with power and anger.

“Violent Ecstasy” is PAYBACK‘s second official album, following their debut “Padecer”, released in 2020. You could say that in terms of extremism, the band’s sound is not based on the most trampy thrash metal. Everything flirts with violence. At times the guitar riffs, such as in “Society of Tiredness”, have an old Destruction feel. The band’s thrashier side has a lot of the Brazilian sound of the 80s and 90s.

“Sarcastic Serenity” is one of the best songs on the album and I found myself thinking a lot about the sound of old Attômica and Executer, but with a little more musical aggression involved. When “God Profit” kicks in with its blazing riff you get the impression that these guys really do have a very promising sound on their hands. It’s a powerful song.

Missiles are fired with the brutal “Blessed (or Cursed)”, a track that from the start rips everything apart with a merciless tempo. Another track I really enjoyed was “Frontline”, which has guitar lines reminiscent of the old Sacrifice from Canada. An excellent job by guitarists Nicolas and Igor.

I couldn’t fail to mention the tribute the band paid to their fellow countrymen THE MIST, with a version of the track “Flying Saucers in the Sky” that was truly killer. The Mist‘s first two albums are absolute classics and deserve greater recognition. A just and fucked-up tribute.

“Violent Ecstasy” is an album with excellent production. The instruments sound clear and heavy, something very necessary for thrash metal. It’s a quality piece of work that proudly carries the banner of Brazilian and Minas Gerais metal.
