OBSCURITY TEARS – Doom4Ever (CD 2022)

Falar do OBSCURITY TEARS é falar de um período muito importante da minha própria trajetória dentro da cena metal nordestina, cena que fiz parte desde fins dos anos 80 até 2008, ano em que mudei de região. Dividi palco com esses doomsters e eles sempre se destacaram dentro da cena pernambucana pela sua qualidade musical, focada do doom metal, algo que não era tão comum ainda na cena brasileira como é hoje em dia.

Lembro da música da banda embalada em uma roupagem mais característica de várias bandas do estilo nos anos 90, com muito peso, vocal feminino e uso de teclados. Fiquei anos sem ouvir nada ou acompanhar o que a banda vinha fazendo e agora em 2023 me reconectei com a música da banda e fiquei muito feliz em perceber o quanto o trabalho do OBSCURITY TEARS evoluiu e amadureceu nesses anos todos de trajetória. “Doom4ever” é um álbum longo, com mais de 1 horas de duração (incluindo aí três faixas bônus), mas ainda assim não é um álbum cansativo, pelo contrário. Proporciona uma audição realmente interessante e cheia de momentos grandiosos e principalmente uma pegada que se conectou realmente com as raízes do estilo.

Ouvindo por exemplo a faixa de abertura “Perfect Disharmony” é possível perceber a essência pura e direta de bandas como Paradise Lost (da fase Lost Paradise), The Gathering e algo da cena grega como no trabalho de estreia do Septic Flesh. Já “Human Plague”, a construção melódica e estética nos aproxima do Paradise Lost pós “Gothic” e é uma grande música. Ainda que possua diversas mudanças durante sua execução, a composição tem um direcionamento. Na mesma linha, mas se aprofundando ainda mais na musicalidade da banda inglesa, “Like An Angel Without Wings” é um dos pontos áltos do álbum, com um extremo bom gosto na construçáo da música em si e com uma vocalização realmente muito boa.

“The Call of the Truth” tem uma alma própria e arranjos muito bons. Os teclados aqui adquirem um papel mais importante na criação de uma atmosfera mais tétrica e tem sucesso nessa empreitada. A próxima é “Lost Centuries” e aqui temos um doom metal mais direto e mais tradicional, com uma roupagem mais crua, como aquilo que era feito nos anos 90 no próprio Brasil.

Uma das minhas faixas favoritas é “The Children of Anu”, que possui arranjos de guitarra que me lembraram a estética adotada pelo Septic Flesh em seu primeiro álbum, mas que não deixa de lado o lado mais tétrico e pesado. Uma das composições mais interessantes vem a seguir com a execução de “Decay of a Supreme One”. A audição se torna uma viagem bastante intensa e os arranjos são muito bons.

A faixa título vem na sequência. “Doom4Ever” faz jus ao nome é se mostra uma composição pesada, mas que se encontra em andamentos mais diferentes e menos melodia.

As próximas três faixas vem como bônus tracks. “Magna Mater” tem melodias e arranjos que lembram os primórdios do The Gathering, antes do uso intenso de vocais femininos. Existe uma aura mais pesada e épica. “Black Dragon´s Spell” é a única do álbum onde uma influência mais clara do My Dying Bride se manifesta. É uma música realmente muito boa.

O álbum se encerra com “Greed”, que se inicia com uma orquestração épica e logo em seguida vai mantendo um andamento mais cadenciado.

“Doom4Ever” é um álbum realmente muito bom e que traz uma produção de qualidade. Ressalto que, de acordo com o encarte do CD, tudo foi feito pela própria banda, em home studio e remotamente. O resultado final é muito bom. A maturidade da banda atualmente é um destaque e acredito que o único ponto negativo é a capa do álbum.

Não que seja ruim ou algo do tipo, mas esse é um trabalho que merecia uma capa poderosa. Mas enfim, é um detalhe que passa sem maiores prejuízos, já que musicalmente falando “Doom4Ever” mostra uma banda mais do que pronta para saltos mais altos.

To talk about OBSCURITY TEARS is to talk about a very important period in my own career within the northeastern metal scene, a scene I was part of from the late 1980s until 2008, when I moved to another region. I shared the stage with these doomsters and they always stood out within the Pernambuco scene for their musical quality, focused on doom metal, something that wasn’t as common in the Brazilian scene as it is today.

I remember the band’s music being packaged in a style that was more characteristic of many bands in the 90s, with a lot of heaviness, female vocals and the use of keyboards. I didn’t listen to or follow what the band had been doing for years and now, in 2023, I’ve reconnected with the band’s music and I’m very happy to realise how much OBSCURITY TEARS’ work has evolved and matured over the years. “Doom4ever” is a long album, over 1 hour long (including three bonus tracks), but it’s still not a tiring album, on the contrary. It makes for a really interesting listen, full of great moments and, above all, a sound that really connects with the roots of the style.

Listening to the opening track “Perfect Disharmony”, for example, you can realise the pure and direct essence of bands like Paradise Lost (from the Lost Paradise phase), The Gathering and something from the Greek scene like Septic Flesh‘s debut. As for “Human Plague”, the melodic and aesthetic construction brings us closer to Paradise Lost post-“Gothic” and it’s a great song. Even though there are several changes during its performance, the composition has a direction. In the same vein, but delving even deeper into the English band’s musicality, “Like An Angel Without Wings” is one of the album’s high points, with extremely good taste in the construction of the song itself and really good vocals.

“The Call of the Truth” has a soul of its own and very good arrangements. The keyboards take on a more important role here in creating a grim atmosphere and they succeed in this endeavour. The next track is “Lost Centuries” and here we have more direct, more traditional doom metal, with a rawer flavour, like what was done in the 90s in Brazil itself.

One of my favourite tracks is “The Children of Anu”, which has guitar arrangements that reminded me of the aesthetic adopted by Septic Flesh on their first album, but which doesn’t leave out the more grim and heavy side. One of the most interesting compositions comes next with “Decay of a Supreme One”. It becomes a very intense journey and the arrangements are very good.

The title track follows. “Doom4Ever” lives up to its name and proves to be a heavy composition, but with more different tempos and less melody.

The next three tracks come as bonus tracks. “Magna Mater” has melodies and arrangements reminiscent of the early days of The Gathering, before the intense use of female vocals. There’s a heavier, more epic aura. “Black Dragon’s Spell” is the only song on the album with a clearer My Dying Bride influence. It’s a really good song.

The album closes with “Greed”, which begins with epic orchestration and then moves on to a slower tempo.

“Doom4Ever” is a really good album with quality production. I must emphasise that, according to the CD booklet, everything was done by the band themselves, in a home studio and remotely. The end result is very good. The band’s maturity today is a highlight and I think the only negative point is the album cover. Not that it’s bad or anything, but this is a work that deserved a powerful cover. But anyway, it’s a detail that passes without major damage, since musically speaking “Doom4Ever” shows a band more than ready for higher heels.
