NIGHTWÖLF – The Cult of the Wolf (CD 2023)

Dificilmente exista um estilo musical no mundo que abarque tantas possibilidades estilísticas. A música pesada partiu de arranjos mais simples e pesados em seus primórdios e foi se tornando cada vez mais arrojado, técnico e ainda assim capaz de abarcar um número significativo de direcionamentos. Brutalidade, técnica, simplicidade… mas no final o que acaba prevalecendo é o bom e o velho heavy metal.

O NIGHTWÖLF finalmente chegou ao seu debut álbum e meus caros, isso aqui é uma jóia do metal pesado para ninguém colocar defeito. Felizmente os caras não pegam carona no saturado, masturbatório e egocêntrico power metal brasileiro. Preferem beber direto da fonte da NWOBHM e afins e criam um álbum de estreia que traz na sua veia o melhor que o estilo tem a oferecer, ou seja, riffs e mais riffs, um peso desgraçado e vocais cortantes.

O álbum abre com a intro “Lupus Cultus”, um momento obscuro que é preparação para a veloz e energética “Glory of Death”, que tem um andamento e uma pegada que nos remetem a mestres como Accept e Judas Priest e até mesmos alguns arranjos de guitarras que seguem a aura britânica do velho donzela de ferro. Uma música acertada para abrir um álbum poderoso. O refrão é para se gritar com os punhos cerrados.

A segunda faixa foi o single promocional do álbum e traz em sua essência o espírito da Valáquia e seu infame Vlad Dracula. “Kill the Light” transpira Judas Priest… Grande vocalização, riffs viciantes e solos de guitarra que não ficam fritando, mas vão direto ao ponto.

O violão que se inicia em “The Cult of the Wolf” cria a atmosfera de noites envoltas em brumas, como o vento do deserto cortando o rosto de velhos espíritos livres. Essa é uma das melhores músicas do álbum. Não precisa de velocidade. É heavy metal em sua essência. O vocalista Jack Znake faz toda a diferença com uma perfeita interpretação. Aqui temos a certeza da qualidade da produção com um peso absurdo nas guitarras.

A coisa descamba para a violência com o início totalmente thrash de “Under the Sky”, que lembra bastante o Testament, mas logo em seguida volta para o heavy metal movido a riffs diabólicos e vocais que rasgam a noite. Se você procura uma faixa mais tradicional e com aquela pegada dos velhos tempos “Reign in Metal” é a que eu indicaria. As guitarras se iniciam em dueto, construindo uma base de apoio para outra grande composição. Impossível passar batido por uma faixa como essa e sua grande influência de Judas e Saxon. Grande refrão.

Mais gasolina é arremessada à fogueira e “Do & Die” se inicia arrasando tudo pela frente como um incêndio incontrolável. Isso aqui pode quebrar pescoços. Duvida ? Os tons mais altos na voz ficaram bem parecidos com o Exciter em seu álbum “Blood of Tyrants”, ou seja, alto nível. Para aqueles que apreciam solos de guitarra (como eu mesmo), nessa faixa tem uma sequência bombástica.

Mais uma sequência de riffs assassinos vem juntamente com “The Riddle of Steel”, uma faixa mais curta e direta. A penúltima faixa do álbum é a arrasa quarteirão “God of Iron”. Essa faixa vai ter um impacto monstruoso ao vivo, pois une de forma muito interessante influências mais clássicas e uma roupagem mais moderna do metal tradicional. Bom uso dos backing vocals aqui.

A última música desse grande debut álbum é “Falling from Grace”, uma composição mais longa e até certo ponto mais épica. Talvez essa seja a única música do álbum onde o vocal soa um tanto estranho em algumas escolhas de encaixe, mas isso de forma alguma diminui o quanto a faixa é impactante.

“The Cult of the Wolf” é um álbum que deve e tem que abrir portas para esses caras. O Heavy Metal aqui queima forte e passa pelas artérias como lava derretida. Grande produção e um capa totalmente conectada ao trabalho do grupo. Me lembrou as antigas artes de rpg e dos quadrinhos do Conan.

Mas acho que nada disso seria suficiente se a banda, ao vivo, fosse uma completa porcaria. O NIGHTWÖLF em cima do palco é um fonte incrível de energia musical. Estejam preparados para a “Cult of Wolf” tour… e exercitem os seus pescoços.

There is hardly a musical style in the world that encompasses so many stylistic possibilities. Heavy music started out with simpler, heavier arrangements in its early days and has become increasingly bold, technical and yet capable of encompassing a significant number of directions. Brutality, technique, simplicity… but in the end what prevails is good old heavy metal.

NIGHTWÖLF have finally released their debut album and, my friends, this is a heavy metal gem that no-one can fault. Fortunately, the guys don’t hitch a ride on the saturated, masturbatory and self-centred Brazilian power metal scene. They prefer to drink straight from the fountain of NWOBHM and the like and create a debut album that brings out the best that the style has to offer, i.e. riffs and more riffs, a wretched heaviness and cutting vocals.

The album opens with the intro “Lupus Cultus”, a dark moment that prepares us for the fast and energetic “Glory of Death”, which has a tempo and feel reminiscent of masters such as Accept and Judas Priest and even some guitar arrangements that follow the British aura of the old Iron Maiden. A fitting song to open a powerful album. The chorus is one to shout with clenched fists.

The second track was the album’s promotional single and brings to life the spirit of Wallachia and its infamous Vlad Dracula. “Kill the Light” exudes Judas Priest… Great vocals, addictive riffs and guitar solos that don’t fry, but get straight to the point.

The guitar that begins “The Cult of the Wolf” creates the atmosphere of nights shrouded in mists, like the desert wind cutting across the faces of old free spirits. This is one of the best songs on the album. It doesn’t need speed. It’s heavy metal in its essence. Vocalist Jack Znake makes all the difference with a perfect performance. Here we can be sure of the quality of the production and the absurd weight of the guitars.

It descends into violence with the totally thrashy beginning of “Under the Sky”, which is very reminiscent of Testament, but then returns to heavy metal fuelled by diabolical riffs and vocals that tear through the night. If you’re looking for a more traditional track with a touch of the old days, “Reign in Metal” is the one I’d recommend. The guitars start off as a duet, building a foundation for another great composition. It’s impossible to miss a track like this and its great Judas and Saxon influence. Great chorus.

More petrol is thrown on the fire and “Do & Die” begins, destroying everything in front of it like a wildfire. This could break necks. Doubt it? The higher tones in the vocals are very similar to Exciter on their album “Blood of Tyrants”, in other words, high level. For those who enjoy guitar solos (like myself), this track has a bombastic sequence.

Another sequence of killer riffs comes along with “The Riddle of Steel”, a shorter, more straightforward track. The penultimate track on the album is the blockbuster “God of Iron”. This track will have a monstrous impact live, as it brings together more classic influences and a more modern take on traditional metal in a very interesting way. Good use of backing vocals here.

The last song on this great debut album is “Falling from Grace”, a longer and to some extent more epic composition. Perhaps this is the only song on the album where the vocals sound a little strange in some of the choices of placement, but this in no way detracts from how impactful the track is.

“The Cult of the Wolf” is an album that should and must open doors for these guys. The heavy metal here burns brightly and flows through the arteries like molten lava. Great production and a cover totally connected to the group’s work. It reminded me of old rpg art and Conan comics.

But I don’t think any of that would be enough if the band were a complete mess live. NIGHTWÖLF on stage is an incredible source of musical energy. Be prepared for the “Cult of Wolf” tour… and exercise your necks.
