A dupla chilena MORBID CRUELTY lançou no ano passado o seu disco de estreia “Holodomor”, nome de um evento histórico que se encaixa como uma luva ao título da banda.
O Holodomor foi um período na Ucrânia conhecido como a “Grande Fome”, entre 1932 e 1933, causado intencionalmente pelo regime soviético de Josef Stalin via coletivização da agricultura, confisco de alimentos, perseguição aos camponeses e enfraquecimento do movimento separatista ucraniano. Estima-se o número de mortos entre 4 e 10 milhões.
Dê uma boa olhada na arte de capa de “Enrique Zúñiga”, somando forte impacto visual ao título da obra, com tonalidades de verde e preto contrastando com o belo logotipo em amarelo do MORBID CRUELTY.
“Matias Ubeda” (Baixo e Guitarras – EVIL MADNESS, PERVERSOR) e “Alvaro Llanquitruf” (Bateria e Vocais – ATOMIC AGGRESSOR, VALEFAR) compõem esse rolo compressor impiedoso de Death Thrash Metal, absorvendo e reproduzindo características do Black Metal da primeira onda, produzindo assim uma sonoridade marcadamente sul-americana.
Os níveis de agressividade e brutalidade são os mais elevados possíveis, fazendo com que sons como a faixa título possam ser enquadrados no topo da cadeia alimentar do Thrash Metal, na pegada DEMOLITION HAMMER, DARK ANGEL, MORBID SAINT e do início do SADUS.
Boa parte dessa truculência deve-se à performance troglodita do homem das baquetas. Além dos vocais insanos (e muito bons, por sinal), o cara destrói o kit sem dó, enquanto demonstra versatilidade na criação e execução de suas linhas. Confira “Engulfed by the Visions” e confirme por si mesmo.
Algo que torna este álbum mais interessante, considerando a grande quantidade de lançamentos similares, é a combinação de criatividade e habilidade demonstrada pelo guitarrista “Ubeda”. Aliás, característica comum a diversas bandas chilenas atuais de Death/Thrash.
A faixa “Horrid Death” é ótimo exemplo de qualidade acima da média. Principalmente pelos riffs viciantes, mas também pelos ótimos leads e solos. “Petrifying Trauma” é mais uma faixa assassina, com guitarras brilhantemente compostas e executadas, e o baixo que ameaça estourar os falantes a qualquer momento.
A parte final do álbum reserva algumas pérolas: A monstruosa “Unholy Vengeance”, incrivelmente intensa e de harmonias perversas, imensamente efetivas. O cover “God Died on his Knees” é uma pedrada que homenageia o INCUBUS, mas não aquele que você está imaginando. Esta é abanda de Death Metal de Atlanta/Georgia, menos conhecida que a homônima da Louisiana.
Com toda certeza, um excelente álbum de estreia do MORBID CRUELTY. Outra formação chilena atual que abusa da habilidade e técnica em suas composições, sem tornar-se pedante em nenhum momento. Death Thrash sinistro, que trilha orgulhosamente o caminho da mão esquerda.
Altamente recomendável aos fãs da fase primordial do SODOM (ALE) e KREATOR (ALE), RIPPING CORPSE (EUA), POSSESSED (EUA), HADES ARCHER (CHI), PERVERSOR (CHI), SLAUGHTBBATH (CHI), MORBID SAINT (EUA), MERCILESS (SUE).

Chilean duo MORBID CRUELTY released their debut album “Holodomor” last year, named after a dreadful historic event, one that perfectly fits the band’s title.
Holodomor was a period in Ukraine known as the “Great Famine”, between 1932 and 1933, intentionally caused by the Soviet regime of Josef Stalin via collectivization of agriculture, food confiscation, persecution of peasants and farmers and impairment of the Ukrainian separatist movement. The estimated death toll lies between 4 and 10 million people.
Take a good peek at “Enrique Zúñiga’s” cover art, strongly adding visual impact to the album’s theme and title, where shades of green and black contrast with the sharp yellow MORBID CRUELTY logo.
“Matias Ubeda” (Bass and Guitars – EVIL MADNESS, PERVERSOR) and “Alvaro Llanquitruf” (Drums and Vocals – ATOMIC AGGRESSOR, VALEFAR) constitute this vicious Death Thrash Metal juggernaut, absorbing and reproducing traits of first wave Black Metal, thus spawning a distinctly South American sound.
The levels of aggression and brutality are the highest possible, songs like the title track can be framed right at the top of Thrash Metal food chain, in the vein of DEMOLITION HAMMER, DARK ANGEL, MORBID SAINT and early SADUS.
Much of this truculence is due to the troglodyte performance of the man behind the drum kit. In addition to the insane vocals (damn solid, by the way), he mercilessly pummels the kit, while displaying versatility in creation and execution of his lines. Check out “Engulfed by the Visions”, and you shall see that I shit you not.
Something that makes this album even more interesting, considering the generous number of similar releases, is the combination of creativity and skilled playing showcased by guitarist “Ubeda”. In fact, a feature shared by the current Chilean Death/Thrash leading bands.
“Horrid Death” is a great example of his shredding expertise. Mainly for the addictive riffs, but also for the great leads and solos. “Petrifying Trauma” is yet another killer track, with brilliant guitars and a bass sound that threatens to blow the speakers at any moment.
The album’s final section reserves a couple gems: The diabolical “Unholy Vengeance”, incredibly intense, packing perverse and immensely effective harmonies; and cover “God Died on his Knees“, which poses a fine tribute to INCUBUS, but not the one you’re probably expecting. This one is the Atlanta/GA based Death Metal band, less known than the Louisiana homonym.
Positively, an excellent debut album by MORBID CRUELTY. Another contemporary Chilean formation flashing skilled musicians and refined technique in its compositions, without ever sounding boring or pretentious. Sinister and harsh Death Thrash, proudly treading the left-hand path.
Highly recommended for fans of early SODOM (GER) and KREATOR (GER), RIPPING CORPSE (USA), POSSESSED (USA), HADES ARCHER (CHL), PERVERSOR (CHL), SLAUGHTBBATH (CHL), MORBID SAINT (USA), MERCILESS (SWE).
