MALOKARPATAN – Vertumnus Caesar (Adv. CD 2023)

Eu tive a chance de conhecer essa banda com seus dois primeiros álbuns, os magníficos “Stridžie dni”, de 2015 e “Nordkarpatenland”, de 2017. A primeira impressão que tive foi a de que estava diante de algo realmente único, impressão que tive quando ouvi a primeira vez os monstros do Master´s Hammer. Ao mesmo tempo que sou um defensor da tradição, adoro ouvir bandas que ultrapassem as barreiras dos gêneros musicais ao criar experiências que vão além da música. Outro diferencial é o humano. Pude entrevistar a banda para a edição física do The Old Coffin Spirit zine e foi uma conversa muito enriquecedora, mostrando que a banda tem muito mais a oferecer do que apenas o aspecto musical.

O MALOKARPATAN é um desses grupos que quando gravam um novo álbum sempre buscam oferecer uma experiência sensorial além do tradicional e esse novo álbum “Vertumnus Caesar” é um lançamento que trabalha essa ideia de forma perfeita. Ao unir black metal com heavy metal, experimentalismos e uma abordagem lírica fora do convencional, esse quarteto da Eslováquia consegue evoluir ainda mais dentro de sua própria música.

“Na okraji priepaste otevíra sa hviezdny zámek” é a instrumental que abre o álbum e pavimenta o caminho para a mais agressiva “Kočár postupuje temnomodrými dálavami na juhozápad”, essa sim uma faixa que une diversas abordagens musicais, mantendo uma pegada mais intensa. Os elementos do heavy metal se fundem com riffs muito marcantes e soam sensacionais. A faixa título “Vetumnus Caesar” tem alguns riffs que me soam como o velho Destruction, mas com a bateria martelando de forma incessante e abrindo espaço para teclados que criam uma ambientação transcendental. Os solos são excelentes também. Essa faixa tem uma pegada bem Master´s Hammer em sua construção.

A próxima faixa é “Vovnútri chlácholivého útočišta kunstkamru” é heavy metal puro, muito influenciada pelo trabalho do supreme mestre King Diamond e sua trupe infernal do Mercyful Fate. A vocalização mais rasgada é a diferença primordial. O uso de percussão e algumas linhas de teclado realmente diferentes são um plus a essa composição.

Há elementos mais progressivos na faixa “Panstvo salamandrov jest v kavernách zeme” e isso se evidencia no uso dos teclados e nas melodias que se constroem em torno deles. A sonoridade não busca beleza convencional. Ela trabalha com cores bem diversas e mesmo quando o peso se inicia, a sessão rítmica segue um padrão não tão previsível e isso é realmente excitante. A partir de sua metade a faixa adquire uma roupagem marcial e espacial, elementos muito interessantes que se encaixam perfeitamente com o som do grupo.

Na sequência temos “Maharal a Golem”, que se inicia de forma dramática, quase como uma ambientação de um filme, mas rapidamente vai ficado mais intensa, mais rápida e com riffs diretos. Mais uma vez os teclados se destacam e a partir dos 3:34, o não convencional se apresenta com resultados realmente espetaculares, antes de tudo vir abaixo com a velocidade peso (a la Celtic Frost) de seus momentos finais.

As duas últimas faixas são “Mnohoraké útrapy milostpána Kelleyho” – que traz uma pegada mais punk, com riffs que mixam bem o black e o heavy metal – e “I hle, tak zachádza imperiálna hviezda”, a música mais longa do álbum (com mais de 10 minutos). A música vai crescendo em energia e é uma das melhores desse álbum. É pesada, tem elementos mais tradicionais, mas ainda assim traz elementos que dão uma roupagem mais épica que se mantém até por volta da metade da composição, quando ela adquire elementos mais tradicionais, mais heavy metal.

“Vertumnus Caesar” é mais um álbum em que o MALOKARPATAN entrega um trabalho cuidadoso de composição e que vai ajudando a construir uma carreira muito sólida em torno do seu trabalho. Produção e toda a parte artística e de apresentação do álbum são excelentes.

Espero que algum selo brasileiro se prontifique a lançar os quatro álbuns de estúdio do MALOKARPATAN no Brasil. São trabalhos que merecem uma versão em nosso país.

I had the chance to get to know this band with their first two albums, the magnificent “Stridžie dni” from 2015 and “Nordkarpatenland” from 2017. The first impression I had was that I was facing something truly unique, an impression I had when I first heard the monsters of Master’s Hammer. Whilst I’m an advocate of tradition, I love listening to bands that transcend the barriers of musical genres by creating experiences that go beyond the music. Another difference is the human aspect. I was able to interview the band for the physical edition of The Old Coffin Spirit zine and it was a very enriching conversation, showing that the band has much more to offer than just the musical aspect.

MALOKARPATAN is one of those groups who, when they record a new album, always seek to offer a sensory experience that goes beyond the traditional and this new album “Vertumnus Caesar” is a release that works this idea perfectly. By combining black metal with heavy metal, experimentalism and an unconventional lyrical approach, this quartet from Slovakia manages to evolve even further within their own music.

“Na okraji priepaste otevíra sa hviezdny zámek” is the instrumental that opens the album and paves the way for the more aggressive “Kočár postupuje temnomodrými dálavami na juhozápad”, a track that unites different musical approaches while maintaining a more intense feel. The heavy metal elements merge with very striking riffs and sound sensational. The title track “Vetumnus Caesar” has some riffs that sound like old Destruction, but with the drums hammering incessantly and opening up space for keyboards that create a transcendental ambience. The solos are excellent too. This track has a very Master’s Hammer feel to it.

The next track “Vovnútri chlácholivého útočišta kunstkamru” is pure heavy metal, heavily influenced by the work of the supreme master King Diamond and his infernal Mercyful Fate troupe. The raspier vocals are the main difference. The use of percussion and some really different keyboard lines are a plus to this composition.

There are more progressive elements in the track “Panstvo salamandrov jest v kavernách zeme” and this is evident in the use of keyboards and the melodies that are built around them. The sound doesn’t strive for conventional beauty. It works with very different colours and even when the heaviness kicks in, the rhythm section follows a not-so-predictable pattern and that’s really exciting. Halfway through, the track takes on a martial and spatial flavour, very interesting elements that fit in perfectly with the group’s sound.

Next up is “Maharal a Golem”, which begins dramatically, almost like a film set, but quickly becomes more intense, faster and with direct riffs. Once again the keyboards stand out and from 3:34 onwards, the unconventional is presented with truly spectacular results, before everything comes crashing down with the heavy speed (a la Celtic Frost) of its final moments.

The last two tracks are “Mnohoraké útrapy milostpána Kelleyho” – which has a more punk feel, with riffs that mix black and heavy metal well – and “I hle, tak zachádza imperiálna hviezda”, the longest song on the album (over 10 minutes). The song grows in energy and is one of the best on the album. It’s heavy, with more traditional elements, but it still has elements that give it a more epic flavour, which is maintained until around halfway through the song, when it takes on more traditional, heavy metal elements.

“Vertumnus Caesar” is yet another album in which MALOKARPATAN delivers careful songwriting and helps build a very solid career around their work. The production, artwork and presentation of the album are excellent.

I hope that some Brazilian label is willing to release MALOKARPATAN‘s four studio albums in Brazil. They are works that deserve a release in our country.
