HAIL SPIRIT NOIR – Fossil Gardens (CD 2024)

Houve um tempo em que a palavra originalidade era algo que inúmeras bandas buscavam e que muitas bandas atingiram em sua carreira, mas essa originalidade pertencia a uma época em que tudo ainda um terreno a ser explorado. Com o passar das décadas, isso foi se tornando cada vez mais difícil. Ser uma banda original hoje em dia é quase uma utopia. Hoje, quando penso em música o sentimento é o que me impressiona. Ouvir uma composição ou um álbum que te faça parar tudo e dizer “uau, espere aí. Isso merece atenção” é cada vez mais difícil. Seja pela quantidade monumental de música que é produzida e lançada todos os dias, seja pela repetição mecânica de fórmulas já utilizadas há anos atrás.

Hoje resolvi ouvir esse álbum dos gregos do HAIL SPIRIT NOIR e tive esse momento de parar tudo o que estava fazendo e colocar toda a minha atenção ao que estava chegando aos meus ouvidos. As definições fornecidas ao som deles traz uma mescla de progressivo, psicodélico e black metal. Sim, é isso tudo feito com maestria, mas principalmente a música desses caras é incrivelmente emocional.

Eu me deparei com um início em que o guitarrista/vocalista Theoharis me impressionou demais com a sua voz limpa, preparando de forma sutil o terreno para que o black metal do grupo se fizesse presente na faixa de abertura “Starfront Promenade”. Belíssima melodia, que nos faz lembrar da sonoridade mais atual que se confunde com o post black metal. Os teclados quando surgem dão um ar setentista à música, que do seu início ao fim tem uma linha melódica incrível.

Se você ao ouvir o termo “black metal grego” já imagina aquela sonoridade clássica que se tornou tão importante nos anos 90, sinto lhe informar que aqui a música toma proporções muito mais amplas e diversificadas. Antes de mais nada “Fossil Gardens” é um álbum feito com imensa atenção aos detalhes e isso o faz especial.

Há uma dramaticidade que envolve todas as composições, mesmo as mais com a cara do black metal. Como disse antes, são os detalhes que vão construindo muros de diferenças entre o tradicional e a música do HAIL SPIRIT NOIR. Ao se iniciar a segunda faixa “The Temple of Curved Space” você é transportado a dimensões épicas que em alguns momentos criam um vórtex musical impactante. Os arranjos feitos pela guitarra me lembraram um pouco a complexidade do Emperor, mas com uma linha melódica grega, respeitando a tradição de sua origem.

“Curse You, Entropia” é uma das melhores do álbum. As melodias e arranjos são inebriantes. Não é uma música rápida. Tudo é criado aqui para a emoção e a melodia. Próximo do final da composição você é surpreendido por um excelente trabalho feito pelo baixista Demian, que também gravou guitarras nesse álbum.

Outra música em que uma excelente linha de guitarra é apresentada é a visceral “The Blue Dot”. Os arranjos são delicados, o andamento da música é mais contido e em alguns momentos as guitarras me lembraram a faixa “Unchain the Wolves” do Destroyer 666. Os vocais cantados ficaram perfeitos nessa música. Na sequência temos a longa “The Road to Awe”, que mais uma vez se vale de uma voz limpa marcante para construir a atmosfera etérea da música. Até mesmo quando a voz mais agressiva é usada esse clima se mantém. As guitarras e os vocais soam bastante como o incrível trabalho do Borknagar e Limbonic Art, ou seja, influências do mais alto nível. O solo que fecha essa música tem um feeling inacreditável.

“Ludwig in Orbit” é uma faixa instrumental curta e inesperada. É a ponte perfeita para a faixa título do álbum, que também é responsável por fechar esse lançamento com alto nível. “Fossil Gardens” é uma viagem surreal por melodias, riffs e sonoridades intensas. Os teclados se somam a isso enchendo o ambiente com um som espacial ao lado de uma vocalização perfeita.

Que sensação boa é ouvir um trabalho como “Fossil Gardens”. Até mesmo a simplicidade apresentada em sua arte da capa combina com a sutileza de sua música. Um álbum que está na minha playlist sem sombra de dúvidas.

There was a time when the word originality was something that many bands sought and many bands achieved in their careers, but that originality belonged to a time when everything was still a field to be explored. Over the decades, this has become increasingly difficult. Being an original band today is almost a utopia. Today, when I think about music, it’s the feeling that strikes me. Hearing a composition or an album that makes you stop everything and say “wow, wait a minute. That deserves attention” is increasingly difficult. Either because of the monumental amount of music that is produced and released every day, or because of the mechanical repetition of formulas already used years ago.

Today I decided to listen to this album by the Greeks of HAIL SPIRIT NOIR and I had this moment of stopping everything I was doing and putting all my attention on what was coming into my ears. The definitions given to their sound are a mix of progressive, psychedelic and black metal. Yes, it’s all masterfully done, but above all these guys’ music is incredibly emotional.

I came across a beginning in which guitarist/vocalist Theoharis impressed me with his clean voice, subtly preparing the ground for the group’s black metal to be present in the opening track “Starfront Promenade”. It’s a beautiful melody, reminiscent of the band’s current sound, which blends in with post-black metal. The keyboards, when they appear, give the song a 1970s feel, and from start to finish it has an incredible melodic line.

If when you hear the term “Greek black metal” you already imagine the classic sound that became so important in the 90s, I’m sorry to inform you that here the music takes on much broader and more diverse proportions. First and foremost, “Fossil Gardens” is an album made with immense attention to detail and that makes it special.

There’s a drama that surrounds all the compositions, even the more black metal ones. As I said before, it’s the details that build walls of difference between the traditional and HAIL SPIRIT NOIR‘s music. When you start the second track “The Temple of Curved Space” you are transported to epic dimensions that at times create an impactful musical vortex. The guitar arrangements reminded me a little of Emperor’s complexity, but with a Greek melodic line, respecting the tradition of their origin.

“Curse You, Entropia” is one of the best on the album. The melodies and arrangements are intoxicating. It’s not a fast song. Everything is created here for emotion and melody. Towards the end of the composition you are surprised by some excellent work by bassist Demian, who also recorded guitars on this album.

Another song in which an excellent guitar line is featured is the visceral “The Blue Dot”. The arrangements are delicate, the tempo is more restrained and at times the guitars reminded me of the track “Unchain the Wolves” by Destroyer 666. The sung vocals were perfect on this song. Next up is the long “The Road to Awe”, which once again makes use of a striking clean voice to build up the song’s ethereal atmosphere. Even when the more aggressive vocals are used, this atmosphere is maintained. The guitars and vocals sound a lot like the incredible work of Borknagar and Limbonic Art, in other words, influences of the highest level. The solo that closes this song has an unbelievable feeling.

“Ludwig in Orbit” is a short and unexpected instrumental track. It’s the perfect bridge to the album’s title track, which is also responsible for closing this release on a high note. “Fossil Gardens” is a surreal journey through melodies, riffs and intense sounds. The keyboards add to this, filling the atmosphere with a spacey sound alongside perfect vocals.

What a good feeling it is to listen to a work like “Fossil Gardens”. Even the simplicity of the cover art matches the subtlety of the music. An album that is on my playlist without a doubt.
