GUTVOID – Durance of Lightless Horizons (Adv. 2022)

O GUTVOID é uma formação de Toronto, no Canadá, na ativa desde 2019 e praticante de Death Metal, e seu surgimento e ascensão têm sido acompanhados de perto pelo T.O.C.S, com direito a entrevista e resenhas do material primitivo.

 A visão e abordagem do quarteto ao metal da morte são um tanto peculiares, e seus primeiros anos de composição lapidaram, a essa altura, uma banda sólida e tecnicamente bem-desenvolvida.

 Produto disso é o primeiro álbum de estúdio, batizado “Durance of Lightless Horizons” e com lançamento previsto para setembro via “Blood Harvest”, competente selo sueco voltado especialmente ao metal extremo. Tivemos acesso à promo, e dissecamos a seguir essa belíssima estreia para o nosso leitor.

 Primeiro ponto positivo é a linda arte de capa, que retrata uma ruína em paisagem marinha, congregando finamente os elementos água e fogo. Trabalho do renomado ilustrador Yankee “Adam Burke” (ARTIFICIAL BRAIN, ETERNAL CHAMPION, EVOKEN, HOODED MENACE, MARE COGNITUM, dentre muitos outros).

 Quando digo que a abordagem dos canadenses é peculiar, é porque a sonoridade não se encaixa facilmente em nenhum formato pré-concebido. Diria que o Death Metal do GUTVOID tem forte inclinação melódica e atmosférica, elementos Doom robustos e muito presentes e refinamento técnico apurado, ainda que não soe, de forma alguma, como Tech Death. Certamente, a velha escola finlandesa é uma de suas principais referências.

 Suas composições são extensas, e desenvolvem-se a seu tempo, fundamentadas em estruturas e passagens gigantescas e cativantes, mesclando complexidade e seções de pronta assimilação.

 A viagem tem início com a monstruosa “Coils of Gas-Hewn Filament”. O timbre destruidor das guitarras, o volume absurdo do baixo, os vocais abissais e o ritmo vagaroso se destacam no início lúgubre. À medida em que se desenvolve, ganha melodias hipnóticas e eleva-se como peça colossal de Death-Doom Metal. Configura-se não somente como excepcional abertura, mas também como ótimo exemplo da sonoridade do GUTVOID.

 O single de apresentação do álbum é a seguinte “In Caverns It Lurks”, dona de alguns dos riffs mais matadores do trabalho. O ritmo segue particularmente lento, com inserções de passagens atmosféricas “espaciais” extremamente efetivas, as quais precedem os excepcionais andamentos extremos que a finalizam.

 “Delivered to the Altar Lich” nasce potente e extrema, de ritmo médio, riffs enérgicos, com retorno das melodias magnéticas e ótimos leads. Show do batera “D.W. Lee”, que aliás detona ao longo de todo o disco. Menos extensa, mais direta e letal. Excelente.

 A seguinte “The One Who Dwells Beyond Time” é uma pequena viagem ao além, encapsulada em pouco menos de nove brilhantes minutos. As progressões são belíssimas, os riffs inusuais e o solo em seu terço final, arrebatador. A melhor do álbum? Creio que sim.

 Melhor amostra de brutalidade do quarteto, “Skeletal Glyph” abre avassaladora unindo elementos old school e muito groove. Os leads tornam-se mais ácidos e contundentes. Há seções altamente intricadas, tecnicamente abusadas e avant-garde, porém sempre insanas.

 A grandiosa conclusão ocorre com a monolítica “Wandering Dungeon”, do alto de seus 15 minutos. De veia progressiva e Doom, sustenta-se e mantém-se interessante todo o tempo, lançando mão de passagens estimulantes e sequências imprevisíveis.

 Ouvir este disco de estreia do GUTVOID é uma experiência mais que satisfatória, principalmente pelo altíssimo nível de qualidade e maturidade precoce da banda. Pede repetições, ganha profundidade, revela novas nuances e se agiganta a cada audição.

 Item altamente indicado aos fãs de DEMILICH (FIN), ADRAMELECH (FIN), BLOOD INCANTATION (EUA), THE CHASM (MEX), CHTHE’ILIST (CAN), MITHRAS (GBR), SPECTRAL VOICE (EUA).

GUTVOID are a talented quartet hailing from Toronto, Canada. They have been around since 2019, delivering nothing but quality Death Metal. Our team at T.O.C.S have been covering and following their emergence and ascension with great interest, including an early interview and reviews of their primal releases.

 The band’s vision and approach to the metal of death is somewhat peculiar, and their early years of songwriting have, at this point, honed a solid and technically well-developed band.

 The product of such evolution is their first studio album, titled “Durance of Lightless Horizons” and scheduled for release in September via “Blood Harvest”, one of the sharpest Swedish labels, focused on extreme metal. We had access to the promo, and gladly dissect this fine debut for our readers.

 First positive feature is the beautiful cover art, which illustrates a ruin in a seascape, finely combining the elements of water and fire. A great piece by renowned Yankee artist “Adam Burke” (ARTIFICIAL BRAIN, ETERNAL CHAMPION, EVOKEN, HOODED MENACE, MARE COGNITUM, among several others).

 When I say the Canadians’ approach is peculiar, it’s mostly because their music doesn’t easily fit into any preconceived subgenre. GUTVOID’s Death Metal has a strong melodic and atmospheric bent, with vigorous, omnipresent Doom elements and refined technique, although it doesn’t sound, in any way, like Tech Death. Certainly, some of the masterful Finnish old school icons must be main references.

 Their compositions are lengthy, and take their time developing, always based on massive, captivating structures and passages, mixing complexity and sections of prompt assimilation.

 An adventurous journey begins with the monstrous “Coils of Gas-Hewn Filament”. The mammoth guitar tone, absurd bass power, abyssal vocals and slow rhythm all stand out in the dismal beginning. As it expands, it gains hypnotic melodies and rises as a colossal piece of Death Doom Metal. Not only does it make an exceptional opening, but it also works as a remarkable example of GUTVOID’s sound.

 The album’s first available single is the following “In Caverns It Lurks“, which displays some of the record’s most breathtaking riffs. The rhythm remains particularly slow, with insertions of extremely effective spacey atmospheric passages, preceding the exceptional extreme sections that end it.

 “Delivered to the Altar Lich” starts powerful and extreme, mid-paced with energetic riffs, witnessing the return of those magnetic melodies and presenting great leads. Drummer “D.W. Lee” does a kickass job (to be honest, his performance is all around great thoroughly). A less extensive, more straightforward, lethal song. Certainly, a highlight.

 The following “The One Who Dwells Beyond Time” is a little otherworldly trip, encapsulated in nine spine-tingling minutes. Beautiful progressions, unusual and catchy riffs, and an exquisite solo in its final third, arguably crafting the album’s finest piece.

 Best sample of the quartet’s brutality, “Skeletal Glyph” opens overwhelmingly, fusing old school elements and a lot of groove. Leads become more vitriolic and blunter. There are highly intricate, technically sophisticated, and even avant-garde sections, always keeping things insane.

 The grand conclusion comes with monolithic “Wandering Dungeon”, towering with staggering 15 minutes length. With both Proggy and Doomy impulses, it sustains itself and remains continuously interesting, employing stimulating passages and unpredictable sequences.

 Listening to GUTVOID’s debut album is more than a satisfying experience, mainly due to the band’s high-quality standards and prodigious maturity. It begs for repeated listens, gains depth, thrives and reveals new nuances after every spin. Save the date 09/23/22 and check it out!
