Eu sou um fanático por death metal, sempre fui desde o primeiro momento que tive a chance de ouvir o estilo, lá pelos fins dos anos 80. Bandas lentas, bandas ultra brutais, bandas técnicas… seja qual for a abordagem que a banda siga em seus caminhos pela estrada do metal da morte, se me agradar, vou realmente querer acompanhar e conhecer mais.

Entre tantos lançamentos que vem ocorrendo todos os dias ao redor do mundo, há aqueles que simplesmente ganham destaque por diversos motivos. O álbum “Mass Grave Horizon”, da banda norte-americana EXCARNATED ENTITY é um desses trabalhos que já na primeira audição você vira fã.

Tendo sido formada em Seattle em 2018 (ou seja, é uma banda relativamente nova) e com apenas uma demo tape, “Stillborn in Ash”, lançada em 2019, esse quarteto realmente chutou bundas impiedosamente com esse debut álbum, lançado mês passado pela gravadora Nuclear Winter.

O negócio dos caras é predominantemente calcado em um death metal carregado de feeling e com alguns momentos de mais agressividade. Há uma evidente influência do death metal europeu (principalmente da antiga sonoridade finlandesa) e do death metal norte-americano mais proveniente de tumbas decrépitas.

O álbum proporciona uma audição poderosa. Ele abre com a totalmente doom/death “Abjection”, que é uma instrumental de pouco mais de dois minutos, mas já mostra que a banda trabalha com uma atmosfera pesada com propriedade. O feeling é obscuro e enorme. Já a primeira faixa propriamente dita, “Carginogen Shroud” é uma pancadaria da melhor qualidade. Algo como o Incantation encontrando bandas como o Abhorrence, Demigod ou Demilich.

“Irradiated Shadows” tem um riff de início absolutamente perfeito. É uma faixa com muita energia e que em sua reta final abraça um peso absoluto. Música matadora. Na direção contrária vem a sorumbática “Corridor of Flame”. É uma das músicas que soa realmente dentro do espectro do doom metal executado com a podridão do metal da morte.

O massacre continua com “Paralytic Reverie” e seus riffs e arranjos de guitarra cheios de feeling. Ainda que a música tenha momentos mais ríspidos, a atmosfera densa e opressiva cumprem seu papel de impressionar o ouvinte. A faixa título é PURO death metal, com um riff de quebrar pescoços.

O esmagamento continua com a pesadíssima “The Butcher´s Pulpit”, outra faixa que colocaria no top 3 desse álbum. Finalmente o álbum é fechado com “Gallery of Defeat”, fechando uma sequência de músicas incríveis. O EXCARNATED ENTITY mostra mais uma vez que o death metal não depende apenas de velocidade. O álbum como um todo tem um trabalho criativo de primeira qualidade, com riffs realmente diferenciados.

A produção é excelente e “Mass Grave Horizon” é o primeiro álbum de uma banda que merece realmente ter seu álbum de estreia reconhecido.

I’m a death metal fanatic, always have been since I first had the chance to listen to the style, back in the late 80s. Slow bands, ultra-brutal bands, technical bands… whichever approach the band takes on its journey down the death metal road, if I like it, I’ll really want to follow it and get to know it better.

Among so many releases that are happening every day around the world, there are those that simply stand out for various reasons. The album “Mass Grave Horizon” by the American band EXCARNATED ENTITY is one of those works that you’ll become a fan of from the first listen.

Having formed in Seattle in 2018 (i.e. they’re a relatively new band) and with only one demo tape, “Stillborn in Ash”, released in 2019, this quartet really kicked asses with this debut album, released last month on the Nuclear Winter label.

The guys’ work is predominantly based on death metal full of feeling and with a few moments of aggression. There’s a clear influence of European death metal (especially the old Finnish sound) and North American death metal, more reminiscent of decrepit tombs.

The album is a powerful listen. It opens with the totally doom/death “Abjection”, which is an instrumental of just over two minutes, but already shows that the band works with a heavy atmosphere with property. The feeling is dark and huge. The first track itself, “Carginogen Shroud”, is the best kind of thrashing. Something like Incantation meeting bands like Abhorrence, Demigod or Demilich.

“Irradiated Shadows” has an absolutely perfect opening riff. It’s a track with a lot of energy and in its final stretch it embraces absolute weight. Killer music. In the opposite direction comes the sombre “Corridor of Flame”. It’s one of the songs that really sounds within the spectrum of doom metal executed with the rottenness of death metal.

The massacre continues with “Paralytic Reverie” and its riffs and guitar arrangements full of feeling. Although the song has some harsher moments, the dense and oppressive atmosphere fulfils its role of impressing the listener. The title track is PURE death metal, with a neck-breaking riff.

The crushing continues with the very heavy “The Butcher’s Pulpit”, another track I’d put in the top 3 of this album. Finally, the album closes with “Gallery of Defeat”, rounding off a sequence of incredible songs. EXCARNATED ENTITY show once again that death metal doesn’t just depend on speed. The album as a whole has top-quality creative work, with really distinctive riffs. The production is excellent and “Mass Grave Horizon” is the first album from a band that really deserves to have its debut album recognised.
