Desde que conheci o CRYPT SERMON alguns anos atrás me tornei imediatamente um apreciador do seu trabalho. O epic doom metal com elementos de heavy metal me cativaram, o que não seria difícil diante da qualidade da música que esse sexteto norte-americano apresenta.
Tive a chance de ver o grupo ao vivo nos Estados Unidos e no palco a qualidade só foi confirmada, pois tudo adquiriu ainda mais peso e até mesmo agressividade.
Após três álbuns de estúdio, o CRYPT SERMON acabou de lançar um novo EP intitulado “Saturnian Appendices”, trazendo três composições novas e um inesperado, mas não improvável cover do Mayhem, o clássico do black metal “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”.
Falando das composições próprias, a banda vem investindo cada vez mais na dramaticidade em sua obra musical e o caráter épico toma conta sempre que necessário. A banda é formada por músicos do mais alto nível e isso evidencia um trabalho diferenciado nas guitarras, por exemplo.
Para quem aprecia bandas como Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Black Sabbath (pós-Ozzy), King Diamond/Mercyful Fate e bandas nessa linha, o CRYPT SERMON vai agradar em cheio. “Only Ash and Dust” abre a cerimônia e é uma composição incrível. Pesada e cheia de emoção, que se manifesta de diversas formas, até mesmo adquirindo cores mais intensas após a metade da música. Destaques para os solos de guitarra que são matadores. Eu gosto muito de virtuosismo nos instrumentos e esses solos me agradaram totalmente.
“A Fool to Believe” é mais tradicionalmente doom heavy metal. Mais focada nas emoções que é envolvida pelo uso dos teclados, deixando o clima mais épico. A música que mais gostei foi “Lachrymose”. Ela carrega uma dramaticidade sufocante, cheia de arranjos que você precisa realmente prestar atenção para perceber. Em alguns momentos os riffs adquirem uma roupagem mais fora do tradicional, soando mais dark e que grandes solos que mais uma vez mostram seu poder.
A banda fecha o EP com sua versão para o clássico do black metal norueguês “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”, do Mayhem. Não espere aquele cover tradicional, tocando nota a nota, soando como o original. O CRYPT SERMON metamorfoseou a composição e a transformou em uma obra do mais puro heavy doom metal, deixando a música soando como se fosse sua proposta.
Coincidentemente vi uma postagem do Fábio Campos (Vulthum, Mythological Cold Towers) em que ele falava dessa versão e a fala dele é certeira “… mesmo sendo estilos diferentes, doom e black metal tem aquela conexão na alma – atmosfera, peso e aquela escuridão que a gente sente de longe”. E é isso mesmo. concordo totalmente e se você não perceber isso ouvindo a música, sua alma já definhou.
Esse lançamento só deixa a vontade de ouvir um novo trabalho mais forte. Músicas, produção e uma arte crua e underground fazem desse um dos lançamentos de peso da discografia do CRYPT SERMON. E eu acho que já passou da hora da banda fazer sua estreia em solo brasileiro.

Since I discovered CRYPT SERMON a few years ago, I immediately became a fan of their work. Their epic doom metal with heavy metal elements captivated me, which was not difficult given the quality of the music this American sextet presents.
I had the chance to see the group live in the United States, and on stage, the quality was confirmed, as everything took on even more weight and even aggressiveness.
After three studio albums, CRYPT SERMON has just released a new EP entitled “Saturnian Appendices”, featuring three new compositions and an unexpected but not unlikely cover of Mayhem‘s black metal classic “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.”
Speaking of their own compositions, the band has been investing more and more in the drama of their musical work, and the epic character takes over whenever necessary. The band is made up of musicians of the highest caliber, and this is evident in their distinctive guitar work, for example.
For those who appreciate bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Black Sabbath (post-Ozzy), King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, and bands along those lines, CRYPT SERMON will be a big hit. “Only Ash and Dust” opens the ceremony and is an incredible composition. Heavy and full of emotion, which manifests itself in various ways, even taking on more intense colors after the middle of the song. Highlights include the killer guitar solos. I really like virtuosity on instruments, and these solos totally pleased me.
“A Fool to Believe” is more traditionally doom heavy metal. It is more focused on the emotions that are enveloped by the use of keyboards, making the atmosphere more epic. The song I liked the most was “Lachrymose”. It carries a suffocating drama, full of arrangements that you really need to pay attention to in order to notice. At times, the riffs take on a more unconventional form, sounding darker, and the great solos once again show their power.
The band closes the EP with their version of the Norwegian black metal classic “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” by Mayhem. Don’t expect a traditional cover, playing note for note, sounding like the original. CRYPT SERMON has metamorphosed the composition and transformed it into a work of the purest heavy doom metal, making the song sound like it was their own.
Coincidentally, I saw a post by Fábio Campos (Vulthum, Mythological Cold Towers) in which he talked about this version, and his words are spot on: “… even though they are different styles, doom and black metal have that connection in the soul—atmosphere, heaviness, and that darkness that we feel from afar”. And that’s exactly right. I totally agree, and if you don’t notice that when listening to the song, your soul has already withered away.
This release only makes me want to hear a new álbum even more. Songs, production, and a raw, underground art make this one of the most important releases in CRYPT SERMON‘s discography. And I think it’s past time for the band to make its debut on Brazilian soil.
