Para aqueles que acompanham a cena black metal brasileira o nome do CATACUMBA não é uma novidade. A banda foi formada em 2003 no Espírito Santo e ficou na ativa até por volta de 2016, quando encerrou as atividades. Agora em 2025 os demônios de Serra voltaram à ativa e já lançaram um novo trabalho, o EP “Decano”.
São quatro faixas próprias e um cover da banda baiana Mystifier. Além disso a versão física desse material traz quatro faixas bônus. Pode esperar nada mais do que o mais puro metal negro brasileiro e isso se evidencia em cada umas das composições aqui apresentadas.
A primeira faixa “Summoning the Evil Spirits” é uma composição que mescla agressividade e partes mais lentas, algumas lembrando bastante o black metal do Varathron. Já em “The Phalax” (uma das melhores faixas desse lançamento) a banda aposta na intensidade e crueza de uma composição brutal. Os riffs são cortantes e frios.
“Spiritual Vomit” soa como o black metal brasileiro soava nos anos 90. Menos velocidade e mais feeling. Em alguns momentos soa como o Sarcófago na faixa “Rotting”. Há momentos mais cadenciados e bons arranjos de guitarra, mais uma vez evocando melodias helênicas. Grande composição com certeza.
A última faixa do CATACUMBA é “The Underworld Worshippers”, que se inicia bem black/thrash e vai intercalando com momentos mais retos e rápidos. Alguns vocais guturais são utilizados nessa música. O EP fecha com o cover da clássica “An Elisabethan Devil Worshipper´s Prayer Book” do Mystifier.
Tocar uma música considerada por muitos um clássico é sempre uma aposta arriscada, mas o CATACUMBA se saiu bem nessa empreitada e prestou uma honrosa homenagem aos veteranos do black/death brasileiro.
A primeira das faixas bônus é a fudida “Spiritual Vomit”, faixa mais lenta e que conta com riffs cheios de feeling. Mais uma vez há aqui uma evidente influência dos mestres do black metal grego Varathron e da cena grega em geral. A próxima é uma versão ainda mais crua e suja de “The Underworld Worshippers”, que soa uma porrada na cara.
“Narcomagick” com certeza vem de uma sessão diferente de gravação, pois a qualidade aqui já não é tão boa quanto a gravação do EP, mas ainda assim é possível comprovar que se trata de uma música com pegada, com impacto. A última faixa da versão física é uma outra roupagem dessa faixa “Narcomagick”, com uma gravação mais crua e “magra”.
Toda a parte gráfica e a produção do CD ficaram excelentes. Essa mistura do preto e prata deram um visual muito foda a todo o encarte. Em termos de gravação “Decano” tem qualidades, tudo soa no lugar e não temos aqui nada muito polido. A crueza está nos detalhes, mas de uma forma positiva.
É muito bom ter recebido a notícia do retorno do CATACUMBA à cena brasileira. Em meio a tanta porcaria que existe por ai, precisamos de bandas que carreguem a velha bandeira em meio ao caos…

For those who follow the Brazilian black metal scene, the name CATACUMBA is nothing new. The band was formed in 2003 in Espírito Santo and remained active until around 2016, when they ceased activities. Now in 2025, the demons from Serra have returned and have already released a new work, the EP “Decano”.
It features four original tracks and a cover of the Bahia band Mystifier. In addition, the physical version includes four bonus tracks. You can expect nothing less than pure Brazilian black metal, and that becomes evident in every composition presented here.
The opening track, “Summoning the Evil Spirits”, blends aggression with slower passages, some strongly reminiscent of Varathron’s style of black metal. In “The Phalanx” (one of the best tracks on this release), the band goes all-in on intensity and the rawness of a brutal composition. The riffs are cutting and icy.
“Spiritual Vomit” sounds like Brazilian black metal did in the 90s—less speed, more feeling. At certain moments it recalls Sarcófago’s “Rotting” era. There are more cadenced sections and great guitar arrangements, once again evoking Hellenic melodies. A truly great composition.
CATACUMBA’s last original track is “The Underworld Worshippers”, which starts off in a very black/thrash manner and alternates with more straightforward, fast passages. Some guttural vocals appear in this one. The EP closes with a cover of the classic “An Elisabethan Devil Worshipper’s Prayer Book” by Mystifier.
Covering a song considered by many to be a classic is always a risky move, but CATACUMBA did well in this endeavor and offered a worthy tribute to the veterans of Brazilian black/death.
The first of the bonus tracks is the killer version of “Spiritual Vomit”, a slower track filled with riffs full of feeling. Once again, the influence of the Greek black metal masters—Varathron and the Hellenic scene in general—is evident. Next comes an even rawer and filthier version of “The Underworld Worshippers”, which hits like a punch in the face.
“Narcomagick” definitely comes from a different recording session, as the sound quality is not on par with the EP tracks. Still, it’s clear this is a song with impact and aggression. The last track of the physical edition is an alternate version of “Narcomagick”, with an even rawer and “thinner” recording.
The visual design and CD production are excellent. The black-and-silver color scheme gave the booklet a very striking look. In terms of recording, “Decano” has quality—everything sounds where it should, and nothing is overly polished. The rawness appears in the details, but in a positive way.
It is truly great news to see CATACUMBA return to the Brazilian scene. Amid so much garbage out there, we need bands that still carry the old banner through the chaos…
