ARES KINGDOM – In Darkness At Last (CD 2022)

As bandas subestimadas e negligenciadas têm um lugar especial no coração de muitos Metalheads. É o caso do ARES KINGDOM, formação de Kansas City (EUA) com status cult que vem produzindo seu genuíno Death Thrash Metal ao longo de nada menos que 26 anos.

 Confesso, a sonoridade do ARES KINGDOM me agrada demais. Embora tenham experimentado no passado, falamos hoje de algo tradicional, conservador, 100% “true” aos preceitos e pilares do metal extremo. Mesmo apostando num formato onde menos é mais, os caras produzem um Death Thrash épico e triunfante.

 Em meados de setembro, a banda lançou seu quinto álbum completo de estúdio, o excepcional “In Darkness At Last” via “Nuclear War Now! Productions”, selo estadunidense integralmente voltado ao metal extremo, e conhecido pelo altíssimo nível do seu cartel.

 A veia épica e grandiosa combina com o visual das capas, e o novo trabalho mantém a tradição com uma belíssima ilustração de 1864 de “James Hamilton”, intitulada “The Last Days of Pompeii”, retratando a cidade do Império Romano tragada pelo vulcão Vesúvio no ano 79 d. C.

 O melhor é perceber que, após tantos anos de batalha num cenário extremamente desfavorável, o trio “Alex Blume” (Vocais e Baixo – PERDITION TEMPLE, ex-BLASPHEMIC CRUELTY), “Mike Miller” (Bateria – ex-ORDER FROM CHAOS) e “Chuck Keller” (Composições, Letras, Guitarras – ex-ORDER FROM CHAOS) foi capaz de lançar um álbum de altíssimo nível, tranquilamente ranqueado entre os melhores da carreira do ARES KINGDOM.

 Não perderei tempo com a intro “Radiant”, foco a partir da ótima “Stormbringer Hyades (Rain Down Darkness)”, que apresenta o som marca registrada do trio, com muitos riffs saborosos e a pegada irresistível que a fusão Death/Thrash proporciona.

 “Under Algol” é das composições mais diretas e pesadas, de variações rítmicas mais complexas e acelerações memoráveis. “The Dragons of Ara” convida descaradamente o ouvinte ao headbanging, que faixa foda senhoras e senhores.  

 Àqueles que curtem mais os sons ríspidos e francos, “Aequinoctium” é uma coturnada no queixo. Não só isso, é também uma faixa de leads e solos elegantes e percussão implacável, tornando-a um dos destaques absolutos da obra.

 “Basilisk Flame” é um som primitivo e bruto, tão ameaçador e letal quanto o olhar da criatura mítica (Basilisco) que inspirou seu título e letras. Também se destaca pelas guitarras insanas. “Rapacious” tem pegada mais cadenciada e altamente épica, remetendo automaticamente à sonoridade de clássicos dos anos 80. Riffs afiadíssimos, solos pra lá de inspirados. Só o filé do metal extremo.

 Você tem a certeza de estar ouvindo algo realmente respeitável, quando a banda é capaz de compor uma música instrumental empolgante. Caso de “Priests of Pallas”. Melhor ainda, porque ela antecede a melhor faixa do álbum: “A Wolf on the Fold”. Guardada para os momentos finais do disco, é uma coleção acalorada de riffs incríveis, empolgante do início ao fim.

 A última faixa “Solomonic Spirals” é outra instrumental, curta e efetiva no encerramento do trabalho.

 O ARES KINGDOM presenteia os fãs de Death Thrash Metal com um discão. Se você não conhece a banda, ou nunca parou para prestar a devida atenção ao material deles, corrija este erro o quanto antes.

 Altamente recomendável a qualquer ouvinte de música extrema, em especial a quem curta o bom e velho ORDER FROM CHAOS (EUA) e atos como HOUSE OF ATREUS (EUA), CRAVEN IDOL (GBR), o soberbo DECEASED (EUA), ARGHOSLENT (EUA), NOCTURNAL GRAVES (AUS) e SCYTHIAN (GBR).

Underrated, overlooked bands have a special place in the hearts of many Metalheads. That is the case of ARES KINGDOM, band hailing from Kansas City (USA) with cult status which have been producing their genuine Death Thrash Metal for no less than 26 years.

  I confess, ARES KINGDOM’s sound pleases me a lot. Although they’ve experimented in the past, we are currently talking about something traditional, conservative, 100% true to the unhallowed commandments and pillars of extreme metal. Even betting on a format where less is more, these gents manage to produce an epic and triumphant brand of Death Thrash.

  In mid-September, the band released their fifth full-length studio album, the exceptional “In Darkness At Last” via “Nuclear War Now! Productions”, an American label entirely devoted to extreme metal, and known for the high quality of its roster.

  The epic and grandiose vein matches the look on the covers, and the new one keeps the tradition with a beautiful 1864 illustration by “James Hamilton” entitled “The Last Days of Pompeii”, portraying Roman Empire city engulfed by Vesuvius volcano in the year 79 A.D

  The best thing is to realize that, after so many years battling in an extremely unfavorable scenario, trio “Alex Blume” (Vocals and Bass – PERDITION TEMPLE, ex-BLASPHEMIC CRUELTY), “Mike Miller” (Drums – ex-ORDER FROM CHAOS) and “Chuck Keller” (Songwriting, Lyrics, Guitars – ex-ORDER FROM CHAOS) was able to release a high caliber album, easily ranked among the best in ARES KINGDOM’s discography.

  I won’t waste time with intro “Radiant”, let’s focus on the great “Stormbringer Hyades (Rain Down Darkness)”, which presents the trio’s trademark sound, with several tasty riffs and the irresistible drive that the Death/Thrash fusion provides.

  “Under Algol” is one of the heaviest compositions, presenting more complex rhythmic variations and memorable accelerations. “The Dragons of Ara” shamelessly invites the listener to headbanging, what a sick track ladies and gentlemen.

  For those who enjoy harsh and frank pieces better, “Aequinoctium” feels like a kick in the guts. Not only that, it also delivers elegant leads and solos and relentless percussion, making it one of the album’s absolute highlights.

  “Basilisk Flame” is a primitive and raw song, as menacing and lethal as the mythical creature’s gaze (Basilisk) which inspired its title and lyrics. It also stands out for its insane guitar work. “Rapacious” has a more rhythmic and highly epic feel, automatically referring to the classic sound of the 80s best. Sharp riffs, inspired solos. The very best extreme metal can offer.

  You really believe you’re listening to something special when the band are able to compose truly refreshing, exciting instrumental music. That’s how “Priests of Pallas” goes. Feels even better, as it precedes the best track off the album: “A Wolf on the Fold”. Saved for the album’s final moments, it’s a heated collection of incredible riffs, rousing from start to finish.

  Last act “Solomonic Spirals” is another instrumental, short yet effective closing the album.

  ARES KINGDOM gifts Death Thrash Metal fans with a memorable new record. In case you don’t know the band, or have never dedicated the due attention to their material, please fix this mistake as soon as possible.

  Highly recommended for any extreme music fans, especially those who enjoy the good old ORDER FROM CHAOS (USA) and acts like HOUSE OF ATREUS (USA), CRAVEN IDOL (GBR), the superb DECEASED (USA), ARGHOSLENT (USA), NOCTURNAL GRAVES (AUS) and SCYTHIAN (GBR).
