AEONIAN SORROW – From the Shadows (EP 2025)

O AEONIAN SORROW é um projeto multinacional que está na ativa desde 2015 e que já possui dois álbuns de estúdio “Into the Eternity a Moment We Are” (2018) e “Katara” (2023).

Seu novo lançamento é o EP “From the Shadows”, que foi lançado de forma independente no último dia 31 de Março. A banda navega por diferentes oceanos musicais, sendo os principais o black metal, o doom, death e toques aqui e ali de gótico. Mas adianto que quando você começa a ouvir a música da banda você se depara com um resultado final que mescla tudo com extrema habilidade.

Há momentos com velocidade que soam bem black metal e há momentos em que o acelerador diminui e tudo vai se encaixando em um contexto mais lento, mais cheio de feeling e delicadeza. Mas não confunda delicadeza com algo que soe brega ou algo assim. Até mesmo quando os vocais femininos que há nas músicas se faz presente, percebemos que tudo soa pesado, tétrico e emocional ao mesmo tempo.

As quatro faixas que compõem esse EP são longas, mas não soam cansativas. A banda soube criam composições que crescem e se tornam bastante poderosas. “Harbinger of Ruin” é uma dessas músicas. Ela abre o EP e é responsável pelo primeiro contato com o som do AEONIAN SORROW. Com inúmeras camadas, texturas musicais e peso, é uma forma perfeita para apresentação a banda ao público que não os conhece.

“Whispers in the Dark” é uma avalanche de peso e feeling profundo. Há aqui uma atmosfera mais carregada e depressiva. Um doom/death metal grandioso. Os vocais de Joel Notkonen e Gogo Melone se alternam e se mesclam criando um ambiente opressor. Grande composição. Já “Your Blackened Forest” tem um início mais tranquilo, mais etéreo que após um tempo se converte em uma massa sonora cheia de sentimentos represados. Os arranjos de guitarra e as melodias criadas nessa música são belíssimos.

A última música é “Mist of Oblivion”, que me trouxe à mente o lado mais obscuro dos ingleses do My Dying Bride. A faixa é tétrica, pesada e te envolve em escuridão. Nos momentos mais bucólicos o vocal feminino é reconfortante.

A produção desse lançamento é excelente, assim como a arte da capa que é muito bonita e se encaixa perfeitamente na proposta do AEONIAN SORROW para esse EP. Agora só nos resta esperar o próximo álbum oficial.

AEONIAN SORROW is a multinational project that has been active since 2015 and already has two studio albums “Into the Eternity a Moment We Are” (2018) and “Katara” (2023).

Their new release is the EP “From the Shadows”, which was released independently on March 31st. The band navigates different musical oceans, the main ones being black metal, doom, death and touches of goth here and there. But I can tell you that when you start listening to the band’s music, you’re faced with an end result that blends everything together with extreme skill.

There are moments of speed that sound very black metal and there are moments when the accelerator slows down and everything fits into a slower context, full of feeling and delicacy. But don’t confuse delicacy with something that sounds cheesy or something. Even when the female vocals are present in the songs, we realize that everything sounds heavy, grim and emotional at the same time.

The four tracks that make up this EP are long, but they don’t sound tiresome. The band has managed to create compositions that grow and become quite powerful. “Harbinger of Ruin” is one of those songs. It opens the EP and is responsible for the first contact with AEONIAN SORROW‘s sound. With countless layers, musical textures and heaviness, it’s a perfect way to introduce the band to an audience that doesn’t know them.

“Whispers in the Dark” is an avalanche of heaviness and deep feeling. There’s a heavier, more depressive atmosphere here. Great doom/death metal. Joel Notkonen and Gogo Melone’s vocals alternate and blend, creating an oppressive atmosphere. Great composition. “Your Blackened Forest”, on the other hand, has a quieter, more ethereal beginning which, after a while, turns into a mass of sound full of pent-up feelings. The guitar arrangements and melodies created in this song are beautiful.

The last song is “Mist of Oblivion”, which brought to mind the darker side of the English My Dying Bride. The track is dark, heavy and envelops you in darkness. In the more bucolic moments, the female vocals are comforting.

The production on this release is excellent, as is the cover artwork, which is beautiful and fits in perfectly with AEONIAN SORROW‘s proposal for this EP. Now all we can do is wait for the next official album.
