TÖHIL – Ascending Underworld (CD 2024)

Eu sempre digo que é muito difícil a Bahia decepcionar quando o assunto é metal extremo. O TÖHIL é mais uma prova desse ditado não oficial do mundo de devassidão e podridão musical.

Compilando as músicas que foram lançadas em dois EPs diferentes, “Trophy of Skulls”, de 2021 e “The Macabre God of Decadence”, de 2022, “Ascending Underworld” é um belíssimo cartão de visitas para o mundo pagão em que o death/black metal do TÖHIL está inserido.

As duas primeiras coisas que me chamaram a atenção foram, primeiramente, a arte de capa matadora que foi usada para esse trabalho. Aliás, todo o trabalho gráfico ficou de alto nível, com as cores dando um destaque grande ao resultado final aqui apresentado. Segundo ponto é a escolha dos mitos maias como um foco central das letras na banda. Poucas bandas seguem essa linha e é legar termos mais um grupo de qualidade abordando essa herança dos povos latino-americanos.

Em termos de música, o TÖHIL cria um death metal carregado com toques de metal negro. As músicas soam sufocantes, demoníacas e os efeitos criados no álbum te fazer ter a impressão que tudo é executado no fundo de um abismo. O único ponto negativo na primeira parte desse trabalho é a gravação. Ainda que tudo seja possível de ser percebido, falta a clareza e volume no álbum, deixando tudo com uma impressão de abafamento. Já no segundo EP o som melhora significativamente e aí sim, o TÖHIL se manifesta com o ódio esperado.

Fora isso, “Ascending Underworld” é um álbum com qualidades e um impacto significativos. Nada é brutal o tempo todo e os riffs cheios de maldade imperam em todas as composições. Os vocais também são como um sussurro gutural e o seu efeito final soa como pura morte musical.

Na primeira parte do álbum a faixa “Tohil” entrega a praga em notas musicais. O inferno arde mais quente com toda a certeza diante desse hino infernal. Destaco também “Caves of Despondency” que soa verdadeiramente como uma cria do abismo e enaltece a blasfêmia….

“Vucub-Caquix” é um puta death metal, com vocais menos guturais, mas não menos oriundos do submundo. Uma música que soa mais intensa é “Shouts of Conflagration”, com riffs sujos . “Thirsty Catharsis” é sublime. Uma composição direta e com um feeling profundo. Certamente as trombetas infernais soaram com esses riffs e bateria.

Todo o álbum possui uma qualidade incrível em termos de criação e execução das músicas. O TÖHIL está agora em débito com as hordas malditas e um álbum completo de músicas inéditas é esperado. “Ascending Underworld” é um aperitivo de bom tamanho, mas urge a necessidade de mais maldições sendo oferecidas. Hail TÖHIL ! Hail Metal Nordestino !

I always say that it’s very difficult for Bahia to disappoint when it comes to extreme metal. TÖHIL is further proof of this unofficial saying from the world of musical debauchery and rot.

Compiling the songs that were released on two different EPs, “Trophy of Skulls” from 2021 and “The Macabre God of Decadence” from 2022, “Ascending Underworld” is a beautiful calling card to the pagan world in which TÖHIL‘s death/black metal is set.

The first two things that caught my eye were, firstly, the killer cover art that was used for this work. In fact, all the graphic work was top-notch, with the colors really highlighting the final result presented here. The second point is the choice of Mayan myths as the central focus of the band’s lyrics. Few bands follow this line and it’s nice to have another quality group addressing this heritage of Latin American peoples.

In terms of music, TÖHIL creates death metal loaded with touches of black metal. The songs sound suffocating, demonic and the effects created on the album give you the impression that everything is played at the bottom of an abyss. The only negative point in the first part of this work is the recording. Although everything can be heard, the album lacks clarity and volume, leaving everything sounding muffled. On the second EP, the sound improves significantly and then TÖHIL manifest themselves with the expected hatred.

Apart from that, “Ascending Underworld” is an album with significant qualities and impact. Nothing is brutal at all times and the riffs are full of evil. The vocals are also like a guttural whisper and their final effect sounds like pure musical death.

In the first part of the album, the track “Tohil” delivers the plague in musical notes. Hell certainly burns hotter in front of this infernal hymn. I’d also like to highlight “Caves of Despondency”, which truly sounds like a spawn of the abyss and praises blasphemy….

“Vucub-Caquix” is a fucking death metal track, with less guttural vocals, but no less from the underworld. A song that sounds more intense is “Shouts of Conflagration”, with dirty riffs. “Thirsty Catharsis” is sublime. A direct composition with a deep feeling. The infernal trumpets certainly sounded with these riffs and drums.

The whole album is of incredible quality in terms of song creation and execution. TÖHIL is now in debt to the damned hordes and a full album of unreleased songs is expected. “Ascending Underworld” is a good-sized appetizer, but there is an urgent need for more curses to be offered. Hail TÖHIL ! Hail Metal Nordestino !
