HOODED MENACE – Fulfill the Curse (Reissue CD 2024)

Em 2008, os finlandeses do HOODED MENACE ainda não era a máquina milimetricamente regulada e expert em criar um metal extremo focado não na extrema velocidade, mas no tétrico peso absurdo de sua música. Naquele tempo esses caras ainda buscavam firmar o nome da banda na cena e não há dúvidas de que o lançamento do álbum “Fulfill the Curse” foi um passo importantíssimo nessa direção.

Lançado originalmente em 2008 pela gravadora Razorback Recordings, “Fulfill the Curse” acabou de ganhar, finalmente, sua versão brasileira que foi lançada pelas gravadoras Cold Art Industry e Mutilation Records, que entenderam a importância desse material para o cenário death doom metal mundial e disponibilizaram uma viagem atmosférica e imersiva pelas profundezas do doom metal, um álbum que é carregado de riffs lentos, vocais cavernosos e uma sensação opressiva de terror, o que não é de espantar, já que tudo aqui recebe uma enorme influência de filmes de terror em geral e especialmente das clássicas séries “Blind Dead” do cinema espanhol, o que adicionou de forma inequívoca uma camada adicional de tensão e escuridão à música desses finlandeses.

Oferecendo ao ouvinte uma produção crua, mas eficaz, “Fulfill the Curse” cria em sua abordagem musical uma sensação de peso claustrofóbico em cada uma de suas nove faixas. Obviamente a banda foi produzindo álbuns cada vez melhores, mas esse aqui, ainda que não possua a polidez de outros trabalhos posteriores, funcionou incrivelmente bem para o estilo proposto, dando à música um sentido mais autêntico que apenas reforça toda a atmosfera sombria que envolve o álbum como um todo. A densa textura das guitarras é intensificada por linhas de bateria que martelam seus ouvidos de maneira ritualística. E ao falar das guitarras, é obrigatório destacar que os riffs aqui são, sem dúvidas, a espinha dorsal do que é apresentado em “Fulfill the Curse”. Lentos, arrastados e até mesmo repetitivos, mas tudo funciona como o cimento que cria um muro sonoro denso, aprisionando o ouvinte em uma bolha de angústia.

Ainda que haja todo esse peso e lentidão predominando, é possível perceber um equilíbrio em relação aos momentos mais melódicos que nos fazem lembrar bandas como Candlemass e Cathedral, enquanto outros criam uma melancolia profunda, trazendo à mente o trabalho de grupos como o Winter, Unholy e novamente o Cathedral (mas em relação ao primeiro álbum do grupo).

O que Lasse Pyykkö, vocalista e também guitarrista, faz é de tirar o chapéu. A performance vocal dele nesse álbum tem uma profundidade abissal, sendo absolutamente grave e ressoante, como se estive sendo berrados nas profundezas da Terra.

É difícil estabelecer preferências em um trabalho como esse, mas sempre há aquele sentimento de maior satisfação quando ouvimos faixas como a faixa de abertura “Rotting Rampage (Menace of the Skeletal Dead)”, onde tudo soa desesperador.

Umas das melhores músicas vem à seguir e é a faixa título “Fulfill the Curse”. Andamento gosmento, lento e acompanhado por uma vocalização pútrida. Um dos momentos mais melancólicos do álbum vem com a abissal “Labyrinth of Carrion Breeze”, uma peça de death/doom metal melódico cheia de riffs tristes e arrastados, evocando imagens do abandono em uma caverna escura e esquecida.

“Beauty and the Feast” é outra composição matadora. Seu peso e o groove que a banda utiliza na execução dessa música criam um resultado impactante. O riff principal cola nos seus ouvidos.

Um último destaque vem com a grotesca “The Love of Gotho, Hunchback of the Morgue”, uma justa homenagem ao filme espanhol de terror “El Jorobado de La Morgue”, onde esse horror dantesco é equilibrado com uma linha melódica mais presente. O ouvinte se veste de luto e tragédia ao ouvir essa composição.

A trajetória do HOODED MENACE não poderia ser mais acertada ao se ter um álbum como esse em sua estreia. O nome da banda foi solidificado como uma força do death/doom metal mundial e a cada novo trabalho isso foi sendo confirmado, mas foi aqui que essa estrada começou a ser trilhada.  Se você aprecia um doom metal carregado na podridão do metal da morte, com uma abordagem mais sombria e direta, então “Fulfill the Curse” é um trabalho a ser conferido.  E felizmente essa versão brasileira do álbum proporciona essa oportunidade aos fãs brasileiros. Antes tarde do que nunca.

In 2008, the Finns of HOODED MENACE were not yet the millimetrically regulated machine they were and experts in creating extreme metal focused not on extreme speed, but on the absurd, grim heaviness of their music. At the time, these guys were still trying to establish their name in the scene and there’s no doubt that the release of “Fulfill the Curse” was a major step in that direction.

Originally released in 2008 on the Razorback Recordings label, “Fulfill the Curse” has finally been given a Brazilian release on the Cold Art Industry and Mutilation Records labels, which has understood the importance of this material for the world’s death doom metal scene and has made available an atmospheric and immersive journey through the depths of doom metal, an album full of slow riffs, cavernous vocals and an oppressive sense of terror, which is not surprising, since everything here is heavily influenced by horror films in general and especially the classic “Blind Dead” series from Spanish cinema, which has unmistakably added an extra layer of tension and darkness to the music of these Finns.

Offering the listener a raw but effective production, “Fulfill the Curse” creates in its musical approach a sense of claustrophobic heaviness in each of its nine tracks. Obviously the band has been producing better and better albums, but this one, although it doesn’t have the polish of other later works, works incredibly well for the style proposed, giving the music a more authentic sense that only reinforces the whole gloomy atmosphere that surrounds the album as a whole. The dense texture of the guitars is intensified by drum lines that hammer your ears in a ritualistic way. And when it comes to the guitars, it should be noted that the riffs here are undoubtedly the backbone of what is presented in “Fulfill the Curse”. They are slow, drawn out and even repetitive, but everything works like cement to create a dense wall of sound, trapping the listener in a bubble of anguish.

Even though all this heaviness and slowness predominates, it is possible to see a balance in the more melodic moments that remind us of bands like Candlemass and Cathedral, while others create a deep melancholy, bringing to mind the work of groups like Winter, Unholy and again Cathedral (but in relation to the group’s first album).

What Lasse Pyykkö, vocalist and also guitarist, does is truly breathtaking. His vocal performance on this album has an abyssal depth, being absolutely deep and resonant, as if it were being blared from the depths of the Earth.

It’s difficult to establish preferences in a work like this, but there’s always that feeling of greater satisfaction when we hear tracks like the opening track “Rotting Rampage (Menace of the Skeletal Dead)”, where everything sounds desperate.

One of the best songs comes next and it’s the title track “Fulfill the Curse”. It’s a slow, sludgy track accompanied by putrid vocals. One of the album’s most melancholy moments comes with the abyssal “Labyrinth of Carrion Breeze”, a piece of melodic death/doom metal full of sad, drawn-out riffs, evoking images of abandonment in a dark, forgotten cave.

“Beauty and the Feast” is another killer composition. Its weight and the groove that the band uses in the execution of this song create an impactful result. The main riff sticks in your ears.

A final highlight comes with the grotesque “The Love of Gotho, Hunchback of the Morgue”, a fitting homage to the Spanish horror film “El Jorobado de La Morgue”, where this Dantesque horror is balanced with a more present melodic line. The listener is dressed in mourning and tragedy when they hear this composition.

The trajectory of HOODED MENACE couldn’t have been better with an album like this on their debut. The band’s name has been solidified as a force in death/doom metal worldwide and with each new album this has been confirmed, but this is where that road began.  If you enjoy doom metal steeped in the rottenness of death metal, with a darker, more direct approach, then “Fulfill the Curse” is one to check out.  And fortunately this Brazilian version of the album gives Brazilian fans that opportunity. Better late than never.
