HELLWAY TRAIN – Borderline (CD 2024)

Eis aqui um dos discos de heavy metal mais esperados por mim em 2024. Conheci o grupo mineiro HELLWAY TRAIN há poucos anos atrás, acho que um pouco antes da pandemia (posso estar errado, mas a memória já não é tão boa quando costumava ser) e tudo o que ouvi já mostrava uma banda com um alto nível de maturidade e qualidade musical.

Felizmente a banda não buscou o caminho mais fácil de oferecer apenas um heavy metal melódico genérico, o que é muito comum na nossa cena, e buscou a criação de uma identidade musical que abraça sem medo o lado mais tradicional do estilo, sem masturbação técnica ou dragões e gingados étnicos brasileiros. Não que técnica e influências diferentes não sejam algo positivo, mas certamente não o são para todos.

Ao lado dos brasilienses do Nightwölf, o HELLWAY TRAIN é minha banda favorita atualmente no heavy metal tradicional brasileiro e “Borderline” mostra a razão disso do início ao fim. A influência de Judas Priest é evidente em vários momentos, mas você também encontra aqui algo do hard rock oitentista que concede ao grupo uma sonoridade mais diferenciada.

O álbum abre com uma Intro que lembra algo de uma trilha sonora, sei lá, saída do “A Volta dos Mortos Vivos”, ou até mesmo com uma vibe meio The Sisters of Mercy. De qualquer forma abre caminho para a espetacular “Hell on Earth” com uma baita letra, um refrão incrível e um andamento que nunca ultrapassa o limite de velocidade. A música é intensa e possui momentos bem originais ao meu ver, inclusive com o baterista lançando uma parte bem agressiva. Grande música.

“Born to Be Rock Hard” já possui um título muito foda e começa com uma pegada bem rock ´n roll. É uma faixa para cantar junto em um show. E um salve para o guitarrista da banda. Solo de guitarra matador e totalmente alinhado ao estilo da composição. Na mesma linha vem “Bonded to Devour”, uma faixa com uma atmosfera bem Judas Priest, o que certamente é uma grande responsabilidade, que a banda acaba executando de forma grandiosa.

Uma das minhas faixas favoritas vem na sequência. “Outbreak” tem uma vibe bem hard em suas linhas de guitarra e destaco a entrada da música com bateria e baixo (que baita som). Ainda que seja uma instrumental, essa é uma faixa muito legal. Acaba preparando o ouvinte para a pesadíssima “Ghost (Over the Night)”. O riff principal dessa música é realmente muito foda.

Algo que deixa esse álbum ainda melhor é o fato de que o vocalista Marc Hellway consegue usar sua voz de formas bem diversificadas. Em cada música é possível perceber diferentes abordagens. Grande vocalista.

“Cold Town” inicia com um andamento que soa bem progressivo e o riff que vem crescendo é totalmente heavy metal. Os arranjos são bem interessantes e o vocal de Marc aqui me lembrou um pouco o Led Zeppellin. Estaria eu maluco ? Mas lembrou realmente. É a musica mais original do álbum e tiro o chapéu para a ousadia. Funcionou !

A penúltima música do álbum é “Gateways to Arkham Asylum”, uma faixa com mais velocidade e grandes ideias vindas da guitarra. Com certeza é a música mais intensa do álbum. Para fechar vem uma versão matadora de “Solidão”, dos veteranos do Azul Limão, uma música que deve ter deixado o pessoal de fora bem curioso com a vocalização. O português quando bem utilizado soa muito bem com o heavy metal.

O HELLWAY TRAIN lançou aqui um álbum que vai abrir muitas portas. Espero que a banda possa tocar fora do país para poder receber o reconhecimento que merece. E já fico aqui aguardando o segundo álbum. Dá para apressar os trabalhos por aí ? hahahahhaa

Here’s one of the heavy metal albums I’m most looking forward to in 2024. I met the band HELLWAY TRAIN a few years ago, I think just before the pandemic (I could be wrong, but my memory isn’t as good as it used to be) and everything I heard already showed a band with a high level of maturity and musical quality.

Fortunately, the band didn’t take the easy route of just offering generic melodic heavy metal, which is very common in our scene, but instead sought to create a musical identity that fearlessly embraces the more traditional side of the style, without technical masturbation or Brazilian ethnic dragons and jingles. Not that different techniques and influences aren’t a good thing, but they certainly aren’t for everyone.

Along with Brasilia’s Nightwölf, HELLWAY TRAIN are currently my favorite band in traditional Brazilian heavy metal and “Borderline” shows why from start to finish. The influence of Judas Priest is evident at various moments, but you’ll also find here something of the eighties hard rock that gives the group a more distinctive sound.

The album opens with an intro reminiscent of a soundtrack, I don’t know, straight out of “Return of the Living Dead”, or even with a Sisters of Mercy vibe. In any case, it opens the way for the spectacular “Hell on Earth” with great lyrics, an incredible chorus and a tempo that never exceeds the speed limit. The song is intense and has some very original moments in my opinion, including the drummer launching a very aggressive part. Great song.

“Born to Be Rock Hard” already has a great title and starts with a very rock ‘n roll feel. It’s a track to sing along to at a gig. And let’s hear it for the band’s guitarist. The guitar solo is killer and totally in line with the style of the composition. In the same vein comes “Bonded to Devour”, a track with a very Judas Priest atmosphere, which is certainly a big responsibility, and which the band ends up executing in a great way.

One of my favorite tracks follows. “Outbreak” has a very hard vibe to its guitar lines and I’d like to highlight the drums and bass entrance (what a great sound). Even though it’s an instrumental, this is a really nice track. It prepares the listener for the very heavy “Ghost (Over the Night)”. The main riff of this song is really great.

What makes this album even better is the fact that vocalist Marc Hellway manages to use his voice in a variety of ways. You can see different approaches in each song. A great vocalist.

“Cold Town” begins with a very progressive tempo and the riff that follows is totally heavy metal. The arrangements are very interesting and Marc’s vocals reminded me a bit of Led Zeppellin. Am I crazy? But it really did. It’s the most original song on the album and I take my hat off to the audacity. It worked!

The penultimate song on the album is “Gateways to Arkham Asylum”, a track with more speed and great ideas coming from the guitar. It’s certainly the most intense song on the album. The closing track is a killer version of “Solidão”, by veterans Azul Limão, a song that must have made outsiders very curious about the vocals. Portuguese, when used well, sounds great with heavy metal.

HELLWAY TRAIN have released an album that will open many doors. I hope the band can play abroad so they can receive the recognition they deserve. And I’m already waiting for the second album. Can you hurry up? hahahahhaa
