UNCOUTH – Thorns of Vengeance (CD 2023)

O UNCOUTH é uma banda que já possui ao menos uma década de existência, mas só agora em 2023 o grupo chega finalmente ao seu primeiro álbum de estúdio intitulado “Thorns of Vengeance”.

O nome da banda vem do inglês antigo “couth”, que seria algo como alguém conhecido, que é familiar. Já o termo “Uncouth” acabou se tornando a forma pela qual aquelas pessoas não convidadas e que eram completamente rudes, desrespeitosas passaram a ser chamadas. Curiosamente o termo original deixou de ser utilizado no idioma, mas o termo pejorativo com o prefixo “un” se tornou mais corrente no idioma.

Musicalmente o UNCOUTH é o que seu nome prega, uma música rude, desrespeitosa e totalmente insolente, o que no nosso mundo da música extrema são características mais do que esperadas em uma banda de death metal.

Apesar do death metal ser o gênero principal executado por esse quarteto brasiliense, o black metal também se manifesta pelas composições que fazem parte do debut álbum. Baseado no background dos membros da banda, essas duas linhas musicais são mais do que esperadas. O UNCOUTH traz em sua formação membros ou ex-membros de grupos como Nauseous Surgery, Eminent Shadow, Vultos Vociferos e Human Atrocity.

“Thorns of Vengeance” é um típico álbum do blackened death metal brasileiro. Ele nunca descamba para a violência absoluta, sempre navegando em mares mais brandos, ainda que existam momentos mais rápidos.

O black metal está presente com muita ênfase em algumas partes de guitarra e na vocalização em certas faixas. Há uma boa dose de melodia, mas nada que tire a agressividade da música.

As faixas que tem o death metal mais forte em sua essência são, por exemplo: “The Fall of Fanatics”, “Nightmares – A Vision from Chaos” (a que mais gostei nesse álbum), “Antithesis Tragic for the Christians” (faixa que tem um riff inicial que me lembrou os bons tempos do Sepultura, na fase “Arise”) e “Black Abyss”.

Já no campo mais próximo do black metal brasileiro temos as faixas: “Thorns of Vengeance” (que se tivesse vocal totalmente rasgado seria uma faixa de metal negro pura), “The Face of Cowards” (em vários momentos aquela velha escola do black metal brasileiro aparece, contrapondo os momentos mais death metal), “Dark Emptiness” (uma das mais obscuras), “Lúgubre Lascívia” (uma faixa muito interessante pois soa black/heavy como em algumas bandas norte-americanas, com guitarras e riffs muito bons) e “Obscure Hate” é uma faixa realmente com todo o feeling do metal negro.

A produção do álbum é boa e a parte artística muito interessante. O UNCOUTH continua honrando a tradição brasiliense no metal extremo e não faz concessões em sua composição.

UNCOUTH is a band that has been around for at least a decade, but only now in 2023 has the group finally released its first studio album entitled “Thorns of Vengeance”.

The band’s name comes from the Old English “couth”, which would be something like someone familiar. The term “Uncouth” became the way in which uninvited people who were completely rude and disrespectful came to be called. Curiously, the original term is no longer used in the language, but the pejorative term with the prefix “un” has become more common.

Musically, UNCOUTH is what its name preaches: rude, disrespectful and totally insolent music, which in our world of extreme music are more than expected characteristics in a death metal band.

Although death metal is the main genre played by this quartet from Brasilia, black metal also manifests itself in the compositions that make up the debut album. Based on the background of the band members, these two musical lines are more than expected. UNCOUTH‘s line-up includes members or former members of groups such as Nauseous Surgery, Eminent Shadow, Vultos Vociferos and Human Atrocity.

“Thorns of Vengeance” is a typical Brazilian blackened death metal album. It never descends into absolute violence, always sailing in smoother seas, even though there are faster moments.

The black metal is present with a lot of emphasis on some guitar parts and the vocalisation on certain tracks. There is a good dose of melody, but nothing that takes away from the aggression of the music.

The tracks that have the strongest death metal in their essence are, for example: “The Fall of Fanatics”, “Nightmares – A Vision from Chaos” (the one I liked best on this album), “Antithesis Tragic for the Christians” (a track that has an initial riff that reminded me of the good times of Sepultura, in the “Arise” era) and “Black Abyss”.

In the field closer to Brazilian black metal, we have the tracks: “Thorns of Vengeance” (which if it had totally raspy vocals would be a pure black metal track), “The Face of Cowards” (at various times that old school Brazilian black metal appears, counterpointing the more death metal moments), “Dark Emptiness” (one of the darkest), “Lúgubre Lascívia” (a very interesting track because it sounds black/heavy like some North American bands, with very good guitars and riffs) and “Obscure Hate” is a track really with all the feeling of black metal.

The album’s production is good and the artwork very interesting. UNCOUTH continues to honour Brasilia’s extreme metal tradition and makes no compromises in its songwriting.
