VARGRAV – Encircle the Spectral Dimension (MCD 2023)

 O Black Metal Sinfônico é um subgênero complexo e, muitas vezes, mal compreendido ou até mesmo subestimado por boa parte dos ouvintes de Metal Extremo. Os anos 90 viram essa linha de som se “popularizar” e crescer com bandas de renome, que perderam muito de sua qualidade com o passar do tempo, sofreram com mudanças catastróficas de lineup ou rompimentos, e relegaram o estilo, atualmente, a um número bastante reduzido de formações.

 Uma das melhores representantes no mundo de hoje é o VARGRAV, da Finlândia. Desde o lançamento do excepcional “Netherstorm” em 2018, a banda liderada pelo prolífico “V-Khaoz” tem se destacado como peça fundamental do Black Sinfônico.  

Com nova formação, os caras acabam de lançar o EP / MCD “Encircle The Spectral Dimension”, que conta com o fundador “V-Khaoz” nos teclados, “Graf Wervolf” nos vocais, “Trollhorn Of The Black Harvest” nas guitarras e baixo e “Baron M. Tarwonen” destruindo a bateria.

 Os CDs a cargo do selo “Werewolf Records” têm formato Digipack, e estão limitados a 666 unidades. A obra pode ser adquirida, também, sob formato Digital.

 O material apresenta uma faixa inédita, a homônima “Encircle The Spectral Dimension”, que estará no terceiro álbum de estúdio “The Nighthold”, ainda sem previsão de lançamento. São quase seis minutos de intensidade marcante e atmosfera épica, baseados fundamentalmente na agressividade das linhas de bateria e suntuosidade dos teclados. Adicionalmente, vocais extremos impecáveis e vocais limpos interessantes na reta final da faixa, que narram (ou declamam) com veemência, além de alguns poucos, ótimos e afiadíssimos riffs das guitarras.   

 As duas faixas seguintes são parte do EP “The Glory of Eternal Night”, que saiu exclusivamente como compacto bônus na versão Vinil do álbum de estreia da banda. A homônima “The Glory of Eternal Night” soa nada menos que magnífica. Seu início cria um ambiente majestoso, antecipando uma tempestade infernal, intercalando velocidade absurda e ritmo médio irresistível. Poucas vezes o BM Sinfônico ofereceu uma mescla tão sombria e efetiva entre guitarras e teclados, altamente hipnótica e viciante.

 Sua sucessora é o cover para “Ancient Queen” do EMPEROR, originalmente lançada na Demo “Wrath of the Tyrant” em 1992. A interpretação do VARGRAV é matadora, a banda soube tratar um clássico do subgênero com o devido respeito, sem deixar de imprimir suas próprias características e pegada.

 A quarta e última faixa do play é uma versão ao vivo de “Netherstorm”, captada na lendária e até então inédita apresentação de 2019 no polêmico festival finlandês “Steelfest Open Air”. Trata-se do som que abre o disco de estreia da banda, exemplo perfeito da qualidade única de “V-Khaoz” como compositor à frente de seus teclados e sintetizadores.

 Resumindo, uma curta e excelente amostra do que está por vir no terceiro álbum completo do VARGRAV. Symphonic Black Metal is a complex subgenre, one which is often misunderstood or even underestimated by many extreme metal legions. The 90s saw this style “popularize” and grow, thanks to a few renowned bands, which in turn lost much of their quality over time, some suffering from catastrophic lineup changes or breakups, relegating it to a very small number of bands and formations.

  One of the best representatives in the present world is VARGRAV from Finland. Since the release of the exceptional “Netherstorm” in 2018, the band led by the prolific “V-Khaoz” has stood out as a fundamental stalwart of Symphonic Black Metal.

Featuring a new lineup, the band has just released the EP / MCD “Encircle the Spectral Dimension”, which presents founder “V-Khaoz” (keyboards), “Graf Wervolf” (vocals), “Trollhorn Of The Black Harvest” (guitars and bass) and “Baron M. Tarwonen” (drums).

  The CDs made available by finnish label “Werewolf Records” come in Digipack format, limited to just 666 units. The mini album can also be acquired in digital format.

  The material features an unreleased track, the eponymous “Encircle the Spectral Dimension“, which will also feature in the upcoming third studio album “The Nighthold” (release date to be announced). The new track makes for six minutes of remarkable intensity and epic atmosphere, fundamentally based on the aggressiveness of the drum lines and the sumptuousness of the keyboards.

 Additionally, impeccable extreme vocals and interesting clean vocals in the final stretch of the track, which narrate (or declaim) with vehemence, accompanied by great, razor-sharp guitar riffs.

  The next two tracks are part of the EP “The Glory of Eternal Night”, which came out exclusively as a bonus single on the Vinyl version of the band’s debut album. Eponymous “The Glory of Eternal Night” sounds nothing short of magnificent. Its beginning creates a majestic ambient, anticipating a hellish storm, interspersing absurd speed and irresistible medium pace. Rarely has Symphonic BM offered such a somber and effective mix between guitars and keyboards, highly hypnotic and addictive.

  Next is the cover for “Ancient Queen” by legends EMPEROR, originally released in the “Wrath of the Tyrant” Demo in 1992. VARGRAV’s interpretation is killer, the band was able to honor a classic with the due respect, without failing to imprint its own characteristics.

  The fourth and final track is a live version of “Netherstorm”, captured during the legendary 2019 performance at the controversial “Steelfest Open Air” Finnish festival. This is also the song that opens the band’s debut record, a perfect example of the unique quality of “V-Khaoz” as a composer and playing his keyboards and synthesizers.

  In short, a small yet excellent taste of what’s to come on VARGRAV’s third full-length album.
