TRISTITIA – Lamentations from the Beginning (CD 2024)

O TRISTITIA surgiu em 1992 e meu primeiro contato com eles foi através do magnífico primeiro álbum intitulado “One With Darkness”. A banda fez parte de um dos selos mais avantgarde da época, o francês Holy Records, que lançava uma grande banda atrás da outra e o melhor, só bandas realmente originais. Até hoje os lançamentos do selo são considerados raros e únicos. Muita coisa boa veio por meio deles.

Para todos que estão familiarizados com o som do TRISTITIA sabem que a banda transitava com leveza pelo doom metal, pelo heavy metal, adicionava atmosferas mais obscuras que poderiam estar em um álbum de black metal e tudo era envolto em uma musicalidade cheia de sentimento e originalidade. Os dois primeiros álbuns foram marcantes em sua época de lançamento e a banda ainda lançou mais três álbuns, encerrando as atividades em 2023, após o lançamento de “Doomystic”.

O lançamento de “Lamentations from the Beginning” no Brasil proporcionou aos fãs da banda a possibilidade de conhecer a alma do TRISTITIA, algo que só é possível ver em seu estado puro quando temos a chance de ouvir os primeiros trabalhos de um grupo. O álbum proporciona exatamente isso. Ele traz as duas demo tapes lançadas pelo grupo sueco. A primeira é “Winds of Sacrifice”, de 1993 e a segunda é “Reminiscences of the Mouner”, lançada em 1994. Além disso o álbum traz duas músicas inéditas: “Doomdaze” e “River of the Cross”, além de uma nova versão de “Winds of Sacrifice”, da primeira demo tape.

É muito fácil perceber o que chamou a atenção do selo na época em que assinaram com o TRISTITIA. O som da banda era denso, envolvente, bastante original e o vocal de Thomas Karlsson (Pagan Rites/Devil Lee Rot) adicionava algo ainda mais único à música da banda. Ambas as demo tapes aqui presentes mostravam uma qualidade acima da média. em “Winds of Sacrifice” é possível perceber ainda a presença de riffs que soavam mais black metal em meio a grandes bases de guitarra e vocalizações épicas. Em vários momentos o TRISTITIA da fase de demo tapes soa como o velho Tiamat ou um Samael dos dois primeiros álbuns, mas com uma sonoridade mais pesada, arrastada e crua …

Não há composições abaixo do que a banda fez em seus álbuns, apenas soa um pouco menos lapidada, o que era de se esperar em uma demo tape. Um bom exemplo do que era a música do grupo, “Envy the Dead” é uma boa opção para começar as audições. A abertura de “Dancing Souls” com seu violão com climas flamencos é só uma porta de entrada para uma música matadora. Essa composição devia soar incrível ao vivo. Já “Winds of Sacrifice” já mostrava todas as características estilísticas que marcariam a música do TRISTITIA nos anos seguintes.

A melancolia de “Reminisences of the Mourner” é profunda. Uma das melhores músicas é a lenta, pesada e tétrica “Mark my Words”. Grande composição. As faixas inéditas “Doomdaze” e “River of the Cross” mostram uma banda muito mais carregada de estranhas vibrações.

Essa compilação cumpre um papel de resgate histórico musical da mais alta necessidade. Em meio a tanta coisa feita apenas por fazer mundo afora, tomar ciência ou resgatar algo com essa qualidade é mais do que necessário.

TRISTITIA appeared in 1992 and my first contact with them was through their magnificent first album “One With Darkness”. The band was part of one of the most avant-garde labels of the time, the French Holy Records, which released one great band after another and, best of all, only really original bands. To this day, the label’s releases are considered rare and unique. A lot of good stuff came through them.

Anyone familiar with TRISTITIA‘s sound will know that the band moved lightly through doom metal, heavy metal, added darker atmospheres that could have been on a black metal album and everything was wrapped up in a musicality full of feeling and originality. The first two albums were remarkable at the time they were released and the band went on to release three more albums, ending their activities in 2023, after the release of “Doomystic”.

The release of “Lamentations from the Beginning” in Brazil gave the band’s fans the chance to get to know TRISTITIA‘s soul, something that can only be seen in its pure state when you have the chance to listen to a group’s early work. The album does just that. It features the two demo tapes released by the Swedish group. The first is “Winds of Sacrifice”, from 1993 and the second is “Reminiscences of the Mouner”, released in 1994. The album also features two new songs: “Doomdaze” and “River of the Cross”, as well as a new version of “Winds of Sacrifice”, from the first demo tape.

It’s very easy to see what caught the label’s attention when they signed with TRISTITIA. The band’s sound was dense, enveloping, quite original and the vocals of Thomas Karlsson (Pagan Rites/Devil Lee Rot) added something even more unique to the band’s music. In “Winds of Sacrifice” you can also notice the presence of riffs that sounded more like black metal amid great guitar bases and epic vocals. At various times, the TRISTITIA of the demo tapes phase sounds like the old Tiamat or Samael of the first two albums, but with a heavier, draggier and rawer sound… There are no compositions below what the band did on their albums, it just sounds a little less polished, which is to be expected on a demo tape.

A good example of what the group’s music used to be, “Envy the Dead” is a good place to start. The opening of “Dancing Souls” with its flamenco guitar is just a gateway to a killer song. This composition should sound incredible live. “Winds of Sacrifice” already showed all the stylistic characteristics that would mark TRISTITIA‘s music in the following years.

The melancholy of “Reminisences of the Mourner” is profound. One of the best songs is the slow, heavy and grim “Mark my Words”. A great composition. The unreleased tracks “Doomdaze” and “River of the Cross” show a band much more charged with strange vibes.

This compilation fulfills a role of musical historical rescue of the utmost necessity. In the midst of so much being done just for the sake of doing it around the world, taking note of or rescuing something of this quality is more than necessary.
