THE CIRCLE – Of Awakening (CD 2023)

Tendo sido formado em 2020 na Baixa Saxônia, na Alemanha, o grupo de symphonic black metal THE CIRCLE chega agora ao seu segundo álbum de estúdio, o excelente “Of Awakening”, lançado há dois dias atrás pela AOP Records.

Com apenas cinco faixas, esse é um trabalho que acerta nesse quesito. As músicas presentes tem um enorme feeling e melodias que abraçam a rispidez característica do estilo.

“Ruins, My Dying World” oferece uma travessia cheia de sentimentos que vão do singelo ao bizarro, envolvendo o ouvinte em uma composição realmente incrível. A faixa não se prende apenas a momentos de rapidez e investe pesadamente em uma construção épica, mas dissonante em vários momentos. Os experimentos vocais são algo a ser destacado por sua qualidade e impacto no resultado final da música. Não apenas nessa faixa, mas em todo o álbum o trabalho realizado pelo guitarrista Stanley Robertson é precioso e detalhista. O cara sabe como criar um verdadeiro clima cheio de diferentes sentimentos.

A segunda faixa “Of Awakening” traz ainda mais melancolia em seus arranjos e constroi uma atmosfera carregada e tétrica. Há muito mais peso e densidade. Os arranjos com violino nessa música trouxeram uma melancolia atemporal à música. Um belo arranjo.

A menor faixa do álbum é “Afflux” é também um experimento que inclui vocalizações que seriam mais comuns no que se acostumou ser chamado de post black metal. A voz aqui realmente é excelente em seus momentos mais leves, o que não impede que verdadeiros grunhidos se façam presentes.

“Reign of the Black Sun” é uma das melhores, senão a melhor, faixa do álbum. Consegue misturar com eficiência uma agressividade fria e cortante com momentos poderosos e épicos. Os vocais lembram em seus momentos mais singelos o Borknagar. A música é uma composição incrível. Poderia destacar o belíssimo solo de guitarra que é executado nessa faixa.

Finalmente “Ashes and Fading Tides” se apresenta e anuncia o fim dos trabalhos nesse álbum que, com certeza, irá apresentar o THE CIRCLE a um público muito maior. A música não poupa a agressão em seus primeiros segundos e os teclados moldam o caráter mais sinfônico da banda. A faixa mais longa de “Of Awakening” se vale de várias camadas para se apresentar ao público que a ouve.

“Of Awakening” é um álbum sólido e promissor de uma banda que ainda vai dar ao que falar. A arte da capa é também uma bela peça de arte. Que venham os próximos álbuns.

Formed in 2020 in Lower Saxony, Germany, symphonic black metal group THE CIRCLE have now released their second studio album, the excellent “Of Awakening”, two days ago on AOP Records.

With only five tracks, this is a work that gets it right. The songs present have a great feeling and melodies that embrace the characteristic harshness of the style.

“Ruins, My Dying World” offers a journey full of feelings that range from the simple to the bizarre, enveloping the listener in a truly incredible composition. The track doesn’t just stick to fast moments and invests heavily in an epic but dissonant construction at various times. The vocal experiments are something to be highlighted for their quality and impact on the final result of the song.

Not just on this track, but throughout the album, the work done by guitarist Stanley Robertson is precious and detailed. He knows how to create a real atmosphere full of different feelings.

The second track, “Of Awakening”, is even more melancholy in its arrangements and builds up a heavy, tetchy atmosphere. There’s a lot more weight and density. The violin arrangements in this song bring a timeless melancholy to the music. A beautiful arrangement.

The album’s shortest track, “Afflux”, is also an experiment that includes vocalisations that would be more common in what has come to be called post-black metal. The vocals here are really excellent in their lighter moments, which doesn’t stop real grunts from being present.

“Reign of the Black Sun” is one of the best, if not the best, track on the album. It manages to efficiently blend cold, cutting aggression with powerful, epic moments. The vocals are reminiscent of Borknagar in their simplest moments. The song is an incredible composition and I would like to highlight the beautiful guitar solo that is played on this track.

Finally, “Ashes and Fading Tides” introduces itself and heralds the end of work on this album, which is sure to introduce THE CIRCLE to a much wider audience. The song doesn’t skimp on the aggression in its first few seconds and the keyboards mould the band’s more symphonic character. The longest track on “Of Awakening” uses several layers to introduce itself to the listening public. The violin arrangements and accompanying vocalisation remind us of the melancholy created by the masters of My Dying Bride. Precious.

“Of Awakening” is a solid and promising album from a band that is still going strong. The cover art is also a beautiful piece of art. Here’s to the next albums.
