RUNEMAGICK – Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind (CD 2023)

 Este redator tem acompanhado o RUNEMAGICK por décadas, e durante o longo hiato entre os anos 2007 e 2018, torceu muito para que a banda retomasse suas atividades, lançando material inédito e voltando aos palcos, ainda que timidamente.

 A aguardada volta não apenas aconteceu, como foi bem-sucedida. Desde o retorno, temos três álbuns de estúdio e mais uma tonelada de singles, uma compilação e um EP. O mais recente acaba de ser lançado via “Hammerheart Records”, o megalítico “Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind”.

Infelizmente, no Brasil a banda ainda é pouco conhecida. Seus três primeiros discos apresentam Death Metal Sueco tradicional e autêntico, e a partir daí a banda passou a focar no Death Doom, desenvolvendo sua identidade com pegada insana. Espere por músicas extensas, de atmosfera ameaçadora e viajante, aroma nauseabundo, peso excruciante, timbre assassino das guitarras e um dos melhores e mais contundentes vocais do estilo.

 O novo trabalho é o testemunho de uma banda veterana, madura e completamente segura de seu jogo, oferecendo seis longas faixas pesadas o bastante para causar combustão espontânea nas cabeças dos ouvintes mais sensíveis.

 Apesar de extensas, as seis músicas em “Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind” fluem com naturalidade. A banda tem expertise na criação de segmentos repletos de tensão e transições arrebatadoras entre os momentos mais cadenciados (por vezes arrastados) e as acelerações triunfantes.

 Dentre as faixas, três se sobressaem e merecem destaque: A peça de abertura “Archaic Magick (After the Red Sun)” com seu andamento preponderantemente lento, intercalado por momentos brilhantes de ritmo médio, cavalgadas e levadas destruidoras calcadas nos riffs venenosos do fundador “Niklas Rudolfsson” (Composições, Vocais e Guitarra).

 “The Storm Rode Beyond the Firmament” é uma composição altamente sinistra, que se desenvolve lentamente, em círculos hipnóticos e alucinantes. O labirinto é subitamente estilhaçado por uma aceleração letal (típica da banda), atingindo o ouvinte como milhares de adagas e fragmentos afiados desferidos pelo impacto.

 Cativantes e psicodélicos quando desejam, temos na faixa “Nocturnal Deities of Winter” alguns dos segmentos mais matadores do disco. Principalmente do meio em diante, quando a base mais arrastada e old school encorpa e ganha agressividade, a partir de um festival de riffs destruidores.

 O décimo terceiro álbum de estúdio do RUNEMAGICK é um presente para os verdadeiros entusiastas do estilo. Intoxicante, maléfico, aterrador, viciante. Obra de verdadeiros mestres do subgênero. Ouça alto, com a devida calma, e entregue-se ao clima aterrador propiciado por essa verdadeira instituição do Death Doom.

This reviewer has been enthusiastically following RUNEMAGICK for decades, and during the long hiatus between 2007 and 2018, I really hoped they would resume the band’s activities, releasing new material and returning to the stage, even if timidly.

  The long-awaited comeback not only happened, but it was also a successful one. Since their return from slumber, RUNEMAGICK has released three studio albums and a ton of singles, a compilation and an EP. The latest has just been released via “Hammerheart Records”, the megalithic “Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind”.

  Quick introduction, as they seem to be criminally overlooked by many metalheads: Their first three albums feature traditional, authentic Swedish Death Metal, and from that point on, the band focused on Death Doom, developing their insane identity. Expect extensive songs, with menacing and trippy atmosphere, nauseating scent, excruciating heaviness, perfected killer guitar tones and one of the best, deadliest vocals in the style.

  The new effort is testament to a veteran band, mature and in total control of their game, offering six extensive tracks heavy enough to cause the most sensitive listeners’ heads to spontaneously combust.

  Though lengthy, the six songs on “Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind” flow naturally. The band has expertise in breeding segments full of tension and the catchiest transitions between cadenced (sometimes sluggish) moments and the triumphant, glorious accelerations.

  Among the tracks, three stand out and deserve to be highlighted: The opening piece “Archaic Magick (After the Red Sun)” with its predominantly slow pace, interspersed with brilliant midtempo attacks and destructive grooves based on the founder’s vitriolic riffs “Niklas Rudolfsson” (Songwriting, Vocals and Guitars).

  “The Storm Rode Beyond the Firmament” is a highly sinister composition, which slowly builds in hypnotic and hallucinatory circles. The labyrinth is suddenly shattered by a lethal acceleration (one of the band’s trademarks), hitting the listener like thousands of daggers and sharp fragments tossed in the impact.

  Captivating and psychedelic when they seem fit, “Nocturnal Deities of Winter” features some of the most vicious sections on the record. Mainly from the middle onwards, when the slow, old-school base is infused with manic aggression, shooting a barrage of destructive, memorable riffs.

  RUNEMAGICK’s thirteenth studio album is a gift for true enthusiasts of the subgenre. Intoxicating, malefic, ghastly, addictive. The work of true masters. Listen to it loud, without haste, and immerse yourself in the terrifying atmosphere provided by this true institution of Death Doom.
