Quem acompanha o death metal sueco sabe que o nome ROGGA JOHANSSON é uma constante naquela cena. Ele tem tocado há muitos anos em dezenas de bandas e projetos, sempre criando música extrema com algumas inserções em outros estilos como o industrial e seu trabalho sempre se destaca pela incrível qualidade. Com a iminência do relançamento aqui no Brasil do primeiro álbum de um dos seus projetos, o RIBSPREADER, batemos um papo com ele.

Olá Rogga, obrigado por conversar conosco cara. Bem, aqui no Brasil ainda estamos enfrentando um monte de problemas por causa da pandemia. E por aí ? As coisas voltaram à rotina ou ainda não ?
Rogga Johansson: Hey cara. Bem, aqui na Suécia nunca aconteceu um grande lockdown, claro que os teatros e shows foram cancelados, mas não muito mais coisas estão diferentes. Você precisa se manter longe de grandes aglomerações de pessoas, é claro, mas tudo está muito próximo do usual por aqui.
Você é um cara realmente ocupado, com toneladas de bandas, álbuns lançados. Como você está lidando com tudo isso que está acontecendo, com tantas restrições nesse momento ?
Rogga Johansson: Como eu disse antes não mudou muito aqui na Suécia. E eu também nunca ensaio ou toco show com nenhum dos meus projetos realmente. Minha única banda que faz tours é o Paganizer e nós temos encarando isso tudo de forma tranquila, e naturalmente não estão acontecendo shows.
Bem, você sempre está envolvido com bandas diferentes, algumas vezes de diferentes estilos. Como você começou a tocar metal ? Você teve alguma educação musical antes do metal ou foi tudo aprendido na raça ?
Rogga Johansson: Bem, eu acho que cresci como um metalhead, Iron Maiden e Accept eram minhas favoritas quando eu era um garoto, assim como o Wasp. Então quando eu fui envelhecendo eu comecei a querer fazer a minha própria música, mas nunca tido treinamento ou aulas. Apenas o típico da Suécia, você vai para o centro de jovens local e curte e eles sempre tem uma sala de ensaio pública onde você pode começar a tocar, então você cria seu próprio material enquanto conhece os amigos e forma uma banda. Eu não conheço termos musicais ou algo assim até hoje em dia, hahahahaha. Eu nunca aprendi essas coisas, eu toco apenas coisas que aprendi por conta própria.
Eu sei que você é uma alma sem descanso. Essa é a única forma de explicar com quantos aspectos musicais diferentes você lida enquanto cria sua música, mas sempre conectando isso com a sonoridade do death metal. Você pode se imaginar tocando ou criando algo totalmente fora desse tipo de música ? Se sim, o que isso seria ?
Rogga Johansson: Na verdade eu também, e tem sido assim desde os meus tempos de adolescente, sempre faço música industrial. Eu amo esse tipo de material, como o das bandas do início da Cold Meat Industry, bandas como Mortiis e In Slaughter Natives. Então isso é algo que eu toco que não é metal de forma alguma. Eu tenho dois projetos com álbuns prontos, Evangelicum que lançou um álbum que incluiu também a primeira demo de 1995 e mais recentemente eu tenho o Mysticist, onde eu toco um material mais ambiente que eu acho que poderia ser chamado de “dungeon synth” desde que eu comecei a ouvir isso e não havia um nome realmente para descrever isso. Eu também amaria tocar algo como um velho metal mais lento ou heavy metal básico, mas eu não consigo cantar nada além de urros. Hahaha. Então eu iria precisar de um vocalista. Na verdade eu e alguns amigos começados um projeto assim, então talvez isso será lançado.
Agora em 2020 você lançou vários álbuns com bandas diferentes como o Furnace,Humanity Delete,Johansson & Speckman, Megascavenger, Reek e o Revolting. Eu tive a chance de ouvir a todos eles e cara, é impressionante a quantidade de ideias que você tem. Como você sabe se um riff ou uma estrutura de música vai funcionar melhor com essa ou aquela banda ? Você tem mais lançamentos vindo por aí ?
Rogga Johansson: Obrigado, eu fico feliz que você gosta do material que eu faço. Bem, na maioria das vezes quando eu sento para compor eu sei exatamente para qual banda eu estou escrevendo, então isso facilita as coisas. Mas algumas vezes eu só faço a música e isso fica de lado e somente após um tempo eu sei onde isso se encaixaria melhor. Sim, hahahaha, há mais vindo por aí… Eu acho que tenho uns 15 álbuns que estão totalmente gravados e completos, esperando o lançamento em selos diferentes, alguns atrasados porque atrasos simplesmente acontecem e alguns naturalmente atrasados por causa da situação atual de crise no mundo.
O seu último trabalho que eu pude ouvir foi o novo álbum do projeto JOHANSSON & SPECKMAN e ele traz death metal também mas como uma roupagem mais simples e primitiva. Esse som mais primitivo do death metal é um influência do próprio Speckmann ou você criou todas as músicas ?
Rogga Johansson: A ideia principal do JOHANSSON & SPECKMANN é fazer esse death metal primitivo, basicamente como se fosse uma mistura do MASTER e do PAGANIZER. Nessa banda eu crio as músicas e o Paul faz os vocais e escreve as letras, então é uma forma fácil de trabalhar e funciona muito bem para nós até agora.
O seu primeiro álbum do RIBSPREADER está para ser lançado aqui no Brasil pela Old Shadows Records. Esse é um álbum de 2004 e você já lançou outros 8 álbuns desde então. Como você compara musicalmente “Boiled to the Cross” and “Crawl and Slither” ?
Rogga Johansson: Na verdade esse é o meu álbum favorito do Ribspreader, ele tem o sentimento e o som que eu queria, é muito foda se eu posso falar isso. “Crawl and Slither” não é na verdade o último álbum, é uma coletânea com dois EPS não lançados antes, que juntamos em um álbum. Mas eu gosto muito dele, há algumas músicas muito legais nele com certeza.
Eu sei que você não faz muitos shows com seus projetos. Por qual razão ? Você prefere mais criar música do que tocá-las ao vivo ?
Rogga Johansson: Sim, em primeiro lugar eu não gosto muito de estar com pessoas ou viajando. Eu gosto de estar com a minha família e viver no interior aqui na Suécia me basta. Então apenas tocar em shows ou festivais e talvez mini turnês de fim de semana com o Paganizer é suficiente para mim, pois posso conferir diferente países, beber cerveja e me divertir, mas não por muito tempo. Eu não fico entediado com isso ou começo a me sentir louco, pois odeio grandes cidades e viajar. Então sim, eu prefiro escrever música do que tocá-la ao vivo e em turnê.
Eu sei que essa deve ser um pergunta difícil mas qual é o seu álbum favorito da sua própria discografia e por que ?
Rogga Johansson: Talvez o do Paganizer “Dead Unburied”. Ele é muito foda para mim e nós também pudemos gravar no Sunlight Studio que foi muito legal. Eu também devo dizer que eu consegui fazer um álbum que eu amo ouvir que é o último do DEAD SUN “The Grand Chamber”. Eu amo aquele som melódico e eu acho que as músicas e os vocais e tudo mais soa como um álbum que eu gostaria de ouvir, já que eu sou um grande fã do material melódico mais antigo de bandas como Lake of Tears e Tiamat.
Rogga, muito obrigado pelo seu tempo. Você gostaria de dizer algo mais para os death metal maníacos brasileiros ?
Rogga Yohansson: Muito obrigado a você também cara. Bem, sim. Hahaha, se vocês gostam de metal sujo e podre na linha antiga, confiram minha música 😀

Hello Rogga, thanks for talking to us man. Well, here in Brazil we are still facing a lot of problems due the pandemic. And there ? Are the things back to the routine or not yet ?
Rogga Yohansson: Hey man! Well here in Sweden it was never any big lock down, sure the theatres and shows are cancelled, but not so much else is any different. You gotta try to stay out of packs of people sure but its pretty much as usual here really.
You are a really busy guy, with tons of bands, albums released,. How are you dealing with everything with so many restrictions in this moment ?
Rogga Johansson: As I said before it isnt much here in Sweden. And also I never rehearse or play gigs with any of my projects really, the only band of mine that is a really gigging band is Paganizer. And we have been taking it easy, as there are no shows naturally.
Well, you are always involved in different bands, sometimes different styles. How did you start playing metal ? Did you have a musical education before metal or you have learned after that ?
Rogga Johansson: Well I grew up as a metalhead I guess, Iron Maiden and Accept was faves when I was a kid, and WASP. Then as I got older I started wanting to do my own music, but never had any training or lessons. Just the typical stuff in Sweden, you go to the local youth centre and hang out and they always have like a public rehearsal room where you can start playing, and then you eventually get your own stuff as you meet friends and for a band. I dont know any musical terms or stuff like that even today haha, I never learned that stuff, I just play basic selflearned stuff.
I am sure you are a very restless soul. It´s the only way to explain how much different aspects of music you deal with while creating music, but Always connecting with the death metal sound. Can you imagine yourself playing or creating something totally far from this kind of music ? If so, what would it be ?
Rogga Johansson: I actually also, and have always ever since my early teens, make industrial music. I love stuff like that, like the early Cold Meat Industry bands like eraly Mortiis and In Slaughter Natives. So Thats something I play thats not metal at all. I have two projects that has done albums, Evangelicum which did an album which included also the first demo from 1995, and I also recently have Mysticist where I play more ambient stuff that i guess would be termed “dungeon synth” even if back when I started to listen to it there wasnt really a name for it. I would also love to play maybe some old doomy metal or basic heavy metal, but I cant sing unless its growl haha. So then there would be need for a vocalist. Actually me and some friends have started work on such a prject, so maybe in the future it will be released.
Now in 2020 you released a LOT of albums with different bands like Furnace,Humanity Delete,Johansson & Speckman,Megascavenger, Reek (2020) and Revolting. I had the chance to listen to all of them and man, is amazing how many ideas you have. How do you know if a riff or song structure will work better with this or that band ? Do you have more releases coming this year ?
Rogga Johansson: Thanx, Im happy you like the stuff I do! Well mostly when I sit down to write I know what band to write for, so that makes it easy. But sometimes I also just make a song, and then it lays around and I know after a while where it would fit best. Yes haha, there is more coming… I think there is about 15 albums that are fully recorded and completed that await release on different labels, some delayed cause delays just happen and some naturally delayed cause of the current state of the world crisis.
The last release from your side I could listen to was the new JOHANSSON & SPECKMANN álbum and it brings death metal but with something more simple and primitive. Was this more primitive death metal sound an influence from Speckmann or were you the creator of all the songs ?
Rogga Johansson: The idea for Johansson & Speckmann is to make primitive death metal, basically like mxing Master and Paganizer. In this band I do the music and Paul does the vocals and lyrics, so its an easy way to work and it works very well for us too so far.
Your first RIBSPREADER álbum is going to be released here in Brazil through OLD SHADOWS RECORDS. It´s a 2004 album and you have released other 8 albums since then. How do you compare musically “Boiled to the Cross” and “Crawl and Slither”?
Rogga Johansson: Its my fave Ribspreader album really, it has all the feeling and sound we wanted, its great if I may say so myself. Crawl and slither is actually not the latest real album, its a compilation of two unreleased Eps, that we then put together into an albums worth of material. But I like it a lot, some really cool songs on it indeed.
I know you don´t play many gigs with your projects. Why ? Do you prefer create music than playing it alive ?
Rogga Johansson: Yeah well first of all I dont like being around people, or travelling. I like being with just my family and living in the countryside here in Sweden fits me great. So just playing shows and festivals and maybe weekend minitours with Paganizer is enough for me, as I get to check out different countries and drink beer and have fun, but not for too long. I dont get to be bored with it and start feeling crazy as i hate big cities and travelling. So yeah I prefer writing music before playing it live and touring.
I know it´s a difficult question but what´s your favorite álbum from your own discography and why ?
Rogga Johansson: Maybe Paganizers Dead unburied. Its great to me, and we also got to record at the Sunlight Studio which was very cool. I must also say that i managed to make an album that I myself love to listen to with the last Dead Sun album The grand chamber. I love that old melodic sound, and I think the songs and the vocals and everything on it came out just like an album that i would wanna hear, as Im a big fan of old melodic stuff like Lake Of Tears and Tiamat.
