REBAELLIUN – Under the Sign of Rebelliun (CD 2023)

“Under the Sign of Rebelliun” tinha tudo para ser um trabalho realmente para comemorar uma volta por cima depois da perda prematura do guitarrista Penna, que faleceu em 2018. Seria o primeiro trabalho sem ele e a expectativa era alta. Mas infelizmente o curso natural da vida mais uma vez pregou uma grande peça na banda e em todos que apreciam a música do REBAELLIUN. O baixista/vocalista Lohy Fabiano também falece em 2022.

O vocalista ainda deixaria suas partes prontas e a banda tomou a decisão de lançar o álbum com essas partes, uma forma também de homenagear o amigo e parceiro de banda. Não imagino o quão difícil foi ver esse trabalho pronto, mas uma coisa é certa em relação ao novo e quarto álbum de estúdio da banda: tanto Penna, quando Lohy estaria realmente orgulhosos do trabalho apresentado nesse álbum. Eu não tenho certeza do quanto desse álbum foi composto pelo guitarrista Evandro Passos (que substituiu Penna em 2018), mas é evidente que sua entrada na banda não alterou em nada o impacto que a música do REBAELLIUN sempre teve, muito pelo contrário, ele fortaleceu esse trabalho e “Under the Sign of Rebellion” pode ser considerado, pelo menos ao meu ver, como um dos álbuns mais diversos em termos de guitarra que a banda já lançou.

Os riffs velozes e cortantes continuam lá, mas há uma fineza que se adicionou ao que era característica do grupo desde seu primeiro álbum. Há mais partes trampadas que trazem um feeling mais carregado às composições e os solos realmente são muito bons. Mas não se engane se você pensa que a banda perdeu sua brutalidade. De forma alguma.

O trabalho realizado no baixo e voz, por Lohy também são poderosos. O álbum como um todo tem um peso constante e a vocalização é poderosa. A bateria de Sandro Moreira é impiedosa como sempre foi.

O death metal brasileiro do REBAELLIUN tem elementos novos, mas nunca modificam a essência do que é a música desse orgulho nacional, ao lado de tantas bandas que levantam a bandeira do metal da morte mundo afora. Se você procura puro caos, a faixa de abertura “All Hail the Regicide” oferece isso gratuitamente e em doses cavalares. Música absolutamente elétrica. O massacre continua com a dinâmica “The God´s Menace”, que mescla brutalidade e técnica, com partes mais cadenciadas e pesadas.

Em “Fear the Infidel” a guitarra se destaca com riffs realmente matadores, assim como um trabalho de bateria que oferece mudanças de ritmo que criam uma parede massiva. Uma das músicas que mais curti foi “Light Eater”, que soa realmente diferente, quase como o death metal dos primórdios do Sodom e Possessed, com um riff principal que dita regras no próprio inferno. O espírito da velha escola se manifesta aqui com força total.

“In Heresy We Trust” foi uma das músicas escolhidas para apresentar o álbum ao público e fez isso com maestria, com todos os elementos do REBAELLIUN. Essa deve ser uma faixa perfeita para executar ao vivo. Outro destaque é a assassina “Antagonize”, cujo riff rasga sua carne sem piedade. Os dois bumbos aqui vão esmagando os desavisados que não se apercebem do tanque de guerra que vem em sua direção.

A arte da capa de “Under the Sign of Rebellion” é cataclísmica e envolta em chamas. Um excelente trabalho, mas acho que a única coisa desse álbum que achei comum, ainda que consiga entender de certa forma a mensagem por trás desse trabalho.

O REBAELLIUN está mais vivo do que nunca e esse álbum é uma prova disso. A banda se encontra tocando bastante ao vivo e já tem uma nova tour europeia que se inicia em breve. O brutal death metal brasileiro vai continuar sendo muito bem representado em outros países e continentes e a memória dos que tombaram pelo caminho nunca será apagada enquanto esses riffs de caos e metal da morte ecoarem.

“Under the Sign of Rebelliun” had everything to be a work that really celebrated a comeback after the untimely loss of guitarist Penna, who passed away in 2018. It would be their first album without him and expectations were high. But unfortunately the natural course of life has once again played havoc with the band and everyone who appreciates REBAELLIUN‘s music. Bassist/vocalist Lohy Fabiano also passed away in 2022.

The vocalist still had his parts ready and the band decided to release the album with these parts as a way of honouring their friend and bandmate. I can’t imagine how difficult it was to see this work finished, but one thing is certain about the band’s new and fourth studio album: both Penna and Lohy would be really proud of the work presented on this album.

I’m not sure how much of this album was composed by guitarist Evandro Passos (who replaced Penna in 2018), but it’s clear that his entry into the band hasn’t altered the impact that REBAELLIUN‘s music has always had, quite the opposite, he has strengthened this work and “Under the Sign of Rebellion” can be considered, at least in my opinion, as one of the most diverse albums in terms of guitar that the band has ever released.

The fast, cutting riffs are still there, but there is a finesse that has been added to what has been characteristic of the group since their first album. There are more fretted parts that bring a more charged feeling to the compositions and the solos are really good. But don’t be fooled if you think the band has lost its brutality. Not at all.

Lohy’s bass and vocal work are also powerful. The album as a whole has a constant weight and the vocals are powerful. Sandro Moreira’s drums are as merciless as ever.

REBAELLIUN‘s Brazilian death metal has new elements, but they never change the essence of what the music of this national pride is, alongside so many bands that raise the banner of death metal around the world. If you’re looking for pure chaos, the opening track “All Hail the Regicide” offers it for free and in huge doses. Absolutely electric music. The massacre continues with the dynamic “The God’s Menace”, which mixes brutality and technique, with slower and heavier parts.

In “Fear the Infidel” the guitar stands out with really killer riffs, as well as drum work that offers changes of pace that create a massive wall. One of the songs I enjoyed the most was “Light Eater”, which sounds really different, almost like the early death metal of Sodom and Possessed, with a main riff that dictates rules in hell itself. The spirit of the old school manifests itself here in full force.

“In Heresy We Trust” was one of the songs chosen to introduce the album to the public and it did so masterfully, with all the elements of REBAELLIUN. This should be a perfect track to perform live. Another highlight is the killer “Antagonize”, whose riff rips through your flesh without mercy. The two bass drums here crush the unwary who don’t realise the war tank coming their way.

The cover artwork for “Under the Sign of Rebellion” is cataclysmic and engulfed in flames. An excellent piece of work, but I think the only thing about this album that I found ordinary, even if I can understand the message behind it to some extent.

REBAELLIUN are more alive than ever and this album is proof of that. The band is playing a lot of live shows and already has a new European tour starting soon. Brazilian brutal death metal will continue to be very well represented in other countries and continents and the memory of those who have fallen along the way will never be erased as long as these riffs of chaos and death metal echo.
