PUTERAEON – Mountains of Madness (Adv. CD 2025)

O quinto álbum de estúdio dos suecos do PUTERAEON será lançado em cerca de duas semanas e os death metal maníacos podem esperar um trabalho que aprofundou ainda mais o som do grupo nos mistérios da obra do escritor H.P.Lovecraft.

“Mountains of Madness” é também o título de um dos contos mais famosos do escritor norte-americano. “At the Mountains of Madness” traz uma história claustrofóbica, envolvente e aterradora do contato de simples seres humanos com seus próprios medos ancestrais e com seres mas antigos que a própria existência humana. É sem sombra de dúvidas uma das obras primas da literatura de terror, que fez inclusive a obra de Lovecraft ser comparada com a de Lewis Caroll, porém em um contexto de puro pavor e desespero, mas também em termos da riqueza de detalhes na criação de um universo único em relação à sua obra.

Conseguir transpor esse sentimento de desesperança e pavor que habitavam cada linha do conto para o metal da morte não é uma tarefa simples, mas acredito que o PUTERAEON conseguiu fazer isso com maestria. Não é de hoje que o contato íntimo entre o death metal e a obra de Lovecraft se manifesta com qualidade. O próprio PUTERAEON em álbuns anteriores já tinha abordado a “mitologia” em torno do misterioso universo de Lovecraft.

Mas acredito que esse novo trabalho conseguiu alcançar aquele ponto de intersecção que reveste a obra de uma qualidade acima da média. O death metal sueco se utiliza de sua agressão e capacidade de criar atmosferas gélidas e intensas e abraça toda a frieza quase impiedosa dos Antigos e transborda de horror diante dos mistérios de esquecidas paisagens monolíticas, que dão espaço para que os mais alucinantes devaneios se manifestem em forma do medo quase palpável que se apresenta no conto.

Musicalmente eu percebo que a banda mantém sua sonoridade em torno de um death metal com riffs e bases de guitarra poderosos, mas tudo aqui soa mais orgânico e sólido. Acredito que a forma mais apropriada de unir o som extremo do grupo com a temática era a de unir as duas coisas, criando composições que soam brutais ao mesmo tempo que tem uma cosmovisão única na criação de camadas mais cheias de sentimento.

Todas as letras vão criando uma conexão muito apropriada da música com a história do conto e com a sua interpretação musical. “Miskatonic Expedition” realmente soa como um momento de início, como um sentimento de crescimento de uma expectativa que atinge seu clímax quando a excelente “The Land of Cold Eternal Winter” se inicia. O groove em torno do riff principal é contagiante. Os arranjos são algo a ser destacado. “Remnants” é mais intensa em sua abordagem e vai na direção contrária da faixa anterior.

“Horror on the Antartic Plateu” é uma música que se preocupa em ir crescendo e tornando conta do ambiente. É uma mistura equilibrada entre um som mais pesado e algo mais agressivo. Uma música que merece uma audição cuidadosa é a pesadíssima “Gods of Unhallowed Space”. Ela tem uma sonoridade que me lembrou um pouco os trabalhos do Hypocrisy em suas abordagens mais lentas.

Uma aura densa é criada com a obscura “The Rise of the Shoggoths”. Os arranjos são tétricos em diversos momentos e o peso vai se tornando avassalador em toda a composição. “Watchers at the Abyss” é mais bruta, mais rápida, ainda assim, muito poderosa. A última faixa é “I am the Darkness”, usa de forma bastante inteligente e soa como o Entombed em seus melhores momentos.

A arte da capa merece um destaque a parte, já que fosse do clichê que o estilo muitas vezes abraça. A sensação que a arte nos passa é a de uma desesperação, abandono, o que cabe perfeitamente na ambientação criada pela banda em torno da obra de Lovecraft. Grande álbum, mas que deve ser escutado com extrema precaução, pois seres mais antigos do que nós podemos recordar podem ser invocados das profundezas da nossa própria mente, pois em seu abismo, Cthulhu não está morto, apenas sonhando.

The fifth studio album from Sweden’s PUTERAEON will be released in about two weeks’ time and death metal maniacs can expect a work that takes the group’s sound even deeper into the mysteries of writer H.P. Lovecraft’s work.

“Mountains of Madness” is also the title of one of the American writer’s most famous short stories. “At the Mountains of Madness” tells a claustrophobic, gripping and terrifying story of simple human beings coming into contact with their own ancestral fears and with beings older than human existence itself. It is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of horror literature, and Lovecraft’s work has even been compared to Lewis Caroll’s, but in a context of pure dread and despair, but also in terms of the wealth of detail in the creation of a unique universe in relation to its creation.

Transposing this feeling of hopelessness and dread that inhabited every line of the tale to death metal is not a simple task, but I believe PUTERAEON has managed to do it masterfully. The intimate contact between death metal and Lovecraft’s work is not new. PUTERAEON themselves had already tackled the “mythology” surrounding Lovecraft’s mysterious universe on previous albums.

But I believe that this new work has managed to reach that point of intersection that makes the work of above-average quality. Swedish death metal uses its aggression and ability to create icy, intense atmospheres and embraces all the almost merciless coldness of the Ancients and overflows with horror at the mysteries of forgotten monolithic landscapes, which give room for the most hallucinatory daydreams to manifest themselves in the form of the almost palpable fear presented in the tale.

Musically, I can see that the band maintains its death metal sound with powerful riffs and guitar bases, but everything here sounds more organic and solid. I believe that the most appropriate way to unite the group’s extreme sound with the theme was to bring the two together, creating compositions that sound brutal at the same time as having a unique worldview in creating layers full of feeling.

All the lyrics create a very appropriate connection between the music and the story of the tale and its musical interpretation. “Miskatonic Expedition” really sounds like a moment of beginning, like a feeling of growing expectation that reaches its climax when the excellent “The Land of Cold Eternal Winter” begins. The groove around the main riff is infectious. The arrangements are something to be highlighted. “Remnants” is more intense in its approach and goes in the opposite direction to the previous track.

“Horror on the Antartic Plateu” is a song that takes care to grow and take over the atmosphere. It’s a balanced mix between a heavier sound and something more aggressive. One song that deserves a careful listen is the very heavy “Gods of Unhallowed Space”. It has a sound that reminded me a little of Hypocrisy‘s slower approaches.

A dense aura is created with the dark “The Rise of the Shoggoths”. The arrangements are tetchy at various moments and the heaviness becomes overwhelming throughout the composition. “Watchers at the Abyss” is rougher, faster, but still very powerful. The last track is “I am the Darkness”, which is very clever and sounds like Entombed at their best.

The cover art deserves a special mention, as it is far from the cliché that the style often embraces. The sensation it gives us is one of despair and abandonment, which fits perfectly with the atmosphere created by the band around Lovecraft’s work. A great album, but one that should be listened to with extreme caution, as beings older than we can remember can be summoned from the depths of our own minds, for in his abyss, Cthulhu is not dead, just dreaming.
