MY DYING BRIDE – A Mortal Binding (CD 2024)

O que se faz em uma noite fria, mesmo que estejamos no fim do outono, está muito frio? Tomar uma taça de vinho? Seria perfeito! Mas o inverno nem começou e já estou gripado, garganta inflamada e tomando antibióticos. Infelizmente, sem vinho! Então, vamos ouvir MY DYING BRIDE? Já que o som dos “doomers ingleses” combina perfeitamente com a noite e o frio. Escuto minha noiva moribunda desde 1993 e esses ingleses que amam sinfonias fúnebres e o arrastar de correntes, nunca me decepcionaram. Estão aí há quase 35 anos, ou melhor, 34 anos, lançando material e eu sempre crio expectativas quando eles lançam um novo trabalho. 

E já são 15 álbuns de estúdio e muitos deles já são clássicos. Da trindade inglesa que despertou nos anos 90 e espalhou a desgraça do metal fúnebre e cinza pelo mundo, esse time contava com o próprio MY DYING BRIDE e também com Anathema e Paradise Lost. Os ingleses de Yorkshire sempre entregaram um trabalho carregado de peso, melancolia, desespero e soturno com a brutalidade do Death Doom Metal e passagens de Gothic Metal, tudo muito bem executado. Da santa trindade inglesa, o MY DYING BRIDE é a única banda que não mudou o seu som que criou lá nos anos 90. Já o Anathema mudou muito e ficou chato. O Paradise Lost mudou também e voltou a executar músicas fúnebres, mas sem o mesmo brilho dos clássicos álbuns do início da carreira.

E esse novo disco segue a mesma cartilha do último trabalho, “The Ghost Of Orion”, (2020) ou seja: MY DYING BRIDE nos últimos trabalhos vêm mesclando músicas que remetem ao início da banda, quando eles executavam um Death Doom Metal e outras faixas já com uma pegada mais Gothic Metal e passagens mais atmosféricas, com vocais mais limpos. “Her Dominion” é uma viagem ao passado. Na minha opinião, ela poderia fazer parte do “As The Flowers Withers”.(1992) 

Essa faixa tem todos os elementos que fizeram o My Dying Bride ser um dos nomes mais importantes do Doom Metal. Os vocais de Aaron Stainthorpe são urrados, ásperos e desesperados. Riffs carregados, quase parando, muito bem executados e, no fundo, aquele violino soltando notas tristes pelo ar. Aliás, outra marca registrada dos ingleses é esse som maravilhoso do violino executado magistralmente por Shaun MacGowan. 

 “Thornwyck” e “The 2nd of Three Bells”, vão na linha dos últimos trabalhos de estúdio. Faixas pesadas, riffs esmagadores, guitarras cheias de tristeza e alguns momentos beirando o Death Metal. Tudo cinza e triste! Aaron volta a cantar com vocais limpos e declamando sua poesia melancólica e toca nossos corações.

“Unthroned Creed” e “The Apocalyptist” juntas somam 18 minutos que passam voando, tamanha qualidade sonora que evoca esses hinos de tristeza e melancolia. “The Apocalyptist” é uma das faixas mais lindas desse disco! Os vocais ásperos e limpos de Aaron e o violino de Shaun MacGowan são o destaque nesta música. No álbum, todo o violino tem bastante destaque e ele fez um trabalho perfeito! Tem partes com piano, tudo isso com guitarras pesadas, baixo e bateria segurando tudo. Aliás, o novo integrante e guitarrista Neil Blanchett com o mestre Andrew Craighan(G) se entrosaram bem.

Fechando esse novo trabalho, as músicas: “A Starving Heart” e “Crushed Embers”. Duas faixas muito boas e encontramos todos os elementos já citados em outras faixas. Se você gosta de Doom Metal e principalmente do MY DYING BRIDE, já sabe o que vai encontrar em um trabalho dos ingleses. A bateria é executada perfeitamente com passagens rápidas e cadenciadas. Baixo, com graves consistentes e pesados. Tudo aprimorado com riffs consistentes e arrastados, e belas melodias fúnebres. Os vocais de Aaron estão divinamente belos e ele está cantando cada vez melhor. E as passagens de piano e violino te levam para um lugar etéreo, um lugar triste e, ao mesmo tempo, belo.

O MY DYING BRIDE entrega um trabalho que te faz viajar ao passado e vislumbrar o presente da banda e faz o que de melhor eles sabem fazer: Death Doom Gothic Metal, de qualidade. Esse mundo é de tristeza e angústia. Tudo é cinza, negro e sentiremos a miséria para todo o sempre.

What do you do on a cold night, even though it’s late fall, it’s very cold? Have a glass of wine? That would be perfect! But winter hasn’t even started and I’ve already got the flu, a sore throat and I’m on antibiotics. Unfortunately, no wine! So let’s listen to MY DYING BRIDE? Since the sound of the “English doomers” goes perfectly with the night and the cold. I’ve been listening to the band since 1993 and these Englishmen, who love funeral symphonies and the dragging of chains, have never let me down. They’ve been around for almost 35 years, or rather 34 years, releasing material and I always get my hopes up when they release a new album.

And that’s 15 studio albums and many of them are already classics. Of the English trinity that awoke in the 90s and spread the doom of funeral and gray metal around the world, this team included MY DYING BRIDE itself and also Anathema and Paradise Lost. The Englishmen from Yorkshire have always delivered work full of heaviness, melancholy, despair and gloom with the brutality of Death Doom Metal and passages of Gothic Metal, all very well executed. Of the English (un) holy trinity, MY DYING BRIDE is the only band that hasn’t changed the sound they created back in the 90s. Anathema, on the other hand, changed a lot and got boring. Paradise Lost have also changed and have returned to funeral music, but without the same brilliance of the classic albums from the beginning of their career.

And this new album follows the same pattern as their last album, “The Ghost Of Orion” (2020), which means that MY DYING BRIDE have been mixing songs that hark back to the band’s beginnings, when they played death doom metal, and other tracks with a more gothic metal feel and more atmospheric passages, with cleaner vocals. “Her Dominion” is a trip back in time. In my opinion, it could have been part of “As The Flowers Withers” (1992).

This track has all the elements that made the band one of the most important names in doom metal. Aaron Stainthorpe’s vocals are howling, harsh and desperate. Heavy, almost halting riffs, very well executed and, in the background, that violin releasing sad notes into the air. In fact, another trademark of the English is that wonderful violin sound, masterfully played by Shaun MacGowan.

 “Thornwyck” and “The 2nd of Three Bells” are in line with their latest studio work. Heavy tracks, crushing riffs, guitars full of sadness and some moments bordering on death metal. All gray and sad! Aaron sings again with clean vocals and declaims his melancholy poetry and touches our hearts.

“Unthroned Creed” and “The Apocalyptist” together add up to 18 minutes that fly by, such is the sound quality that evokes these hymns of sadness and melancholy. “The Apocalyptist” is one of the most beautiful tracks on the album! Aaron’s rough, clean vocals and Shaun MacGowan’s violin are the highlight of this song. On the album, all the violin is very prominent and he did a perfect job! There are piano parts, all with heavy guitars, bass and drums holding it all together. By the way, new member and guitarist Neil Blanchett and master guitarist Andrew Craighan(G) mesh well.

Closing this new work are the songs: “A Starving Heart” and “Crushed Embers”. Two very good tracks and we find all the elements already mentioned in other tracks. If you like doom metal and especially MY DYING BRIDE, you already know what you’re going to find in the work of the English. The drums are perfectly executed with fast, cadenced passages. The bass is consistent and heavy. It’s all enhanced by consistent, drawn-out riffs and beautiful funeral melodies. Aaron’s vocals are divinely beautiful and he’s singing better and better. And the piano and violin passages take you to an ethereal place, a sad and beautiful place at the same time.

MY DYING BRIDE delivers a piece of work that takes you back in time and gives you a glimpse of the band’s present and does what they do best: quality Death Doom Gothic Metal. This world is one of sadness and anguish. Everything is gray, black and we will feel the misery forever and ever.
