Quando se fala em thrash metal nos dias de hoje nem sempre a referência principal que vem à tona seja aquela sonoridade visceral, cortante e direta. Muitas das bandas do thrash moderno não seguem esse caminho. Felizmente bandas veteranas como o MORBID SAINT não tem problema algum de distribuir porrada por todos os lados e esse seu novo álbum “Swallowed by Hell” é uma boa referência para isso.

Tendo sido formado em 1984 e ficado na ativa até 1994, depois retornando em 2010 e estando na estrada novamente desde então, o MORBID SAINT oferece aqui aquela velha escola do thrash metal que soava totalmente violento, com riffs afiados e uma vocalização certeira. O vocal nesse novo álbum lembra um pouco o Destruction antigo, mas em termos de instrumental, a banda mistura bem o thrash metal europeu com o thrash americano mais brutal.

É muito foda ouvir agora em 2024 uma banda destilando um thrash metal com essa pegada aqui. Não há firulas. Tudo é arremessado com ódio na sua cara. A dupla de guitarristas Jay Visser e Jim Fergades estão com raiva do mundo e criaram um conjunto nuclear de riffs e bases das seis cordas que não deixam a energia cair um segundo sequer. Isso é visto logo de cara com as duas primeiras músicas do álbum, a violentíssima “Rise from the Ashes” e “Swallowed by Hell”. A primeira é perfeita para abrir o álbum, pois é uma faixa realmente rápida e assassina. A segunda já tem momentos mais técnicos, mas não é menos poderosa. Os solos são muito bons.

Quer saber o que um bom baixista pode oferecer a uma música ? Ouça “Bloody Floors”. Linha de baixo totalmente foda que é seguida imediatamente por um ataque frontal das guitarras. Em alguns momentos me fez lembrar do Sacrifice canadense. “Burn Pit” é uma música com uma boa dose de complexidade, mas que não deixa isso se tornar algo cansativo. Outra paulada thrash de respeito.

“Fear Incarnate” é forjada em caos e pânico e tem em seu início uma linha de guitarras MUITO foda. Isso é thrash metal seus desgraçados chorões. hahahaha Quando você escuta o thrash metal e não consegue muito tempo para respirar significa que algo foi feito da forma correta. Mesmo quando a música pisa no freio, tudo permanece com intensidade.

Uma das melhores músicas é “Fuck Them All”. Melhor título para uma música que explode tudo ao redor do que esse ? Hell no ! hahahahah E é mandando todos eles se foderem que o MORBID SAINT oferece uma composição que é perfeita para torturar almas mais tranquilas. Não haverá misericórdia. Seus tímpanos são um playground. Com a mesma pegada vem “Bleed Them Dry”, com palhetadas de guitarra certeiras.

Adicionando umas pitadas de melodia aqui e ali “Pine Tuxedo” engana o ouvinte, antes de liberar as bestas em meio ao rebanho. O resultado final é um banho de sangue. Música incrivelmente violenta. Os assassinatos em série continuam com a tempestade de riffs de “Killer Instinct” e “Psychosis”, faixas que terminam o serviço com maestria. Talvez vão vir e discordar da minha avaliação sobre esse disco, mas música para mim é medida pelo nível de desconforto e raiva que faça brotar da minha percepção. “Swallowed by Hell” é um inferno de um álbum de thrash metal tocado com sangue nos olhos e ódio no coração. Isso é bom pra caralho. Não gostou ? Não concordou ? Fooooodaaa-se.

E é claro que não poderia finalizar sem mencionar a arte da capa desse álbum, que é totalmente matadora e se conecta totalmente com o som dos caras. É claro que a capa é assinada pelo lendário Ed Repka.

When talking about thrash metal these days, the main reference that comes to mind isn’t always that visceral, cutting and direct sound. Many modern thrash bands don’t follow this path. Fortunately, veteran bands such as MORBID SAINT have no problem distributing thrash everywhere and their new album “Swallowed by Hell” is a good reference for this.

Having formed in 1984 and remained active until 1994, then returning in 2010 and being on the road again ever since, MORBID SAINT offers here that old school thrash metal that sounded totally violent, with sharp riffs and an accurate vocalisation. The vocals on this new album are a little reminiscent of old Destruction, but in terms of instrumentation, the band mixes European thrash metal with more brutal American thrash.

It’s great to hear a band distilling thrash metal like this here in 2024. There’s no fuss. Everything is thrown in your face with hatred. Guitarist duo Jay Visser and Jim Fergades are angry at the world and have created a nuclear set of riffs and six-string foundations that don’t let up for a second. You can see this straight away with the first two songs on the album, the violent “Rise from the Ashes” and “Swallowed by Hell”. The former is perfect for opening the album, as it’s a really fast and killer track. The second has more technical moments, but is no less powerful. The solos are very good.

Want to know what a good bass player can bring to a song? Listen to “Bloody Floors”. A totally awesome bass line that is immediately followed by a frontal attack from the guitars. At times it reminded me of Canadian Sacrifice. “Burn Pit” is a song with a good dose of complexity, but which doesn’t let it get tiresome. Another respectable piece of thrash.

“Fear Incarnate” is forged in chaos and panic and has a VERY cool guitar line at the start. This is thrash metal, you whiny bastards. hahahaha When you listen to thrash metal and can’t take a breath, it means that something has been done right. Even when the music hits the brakes, everything remains intense.

One of the best songs is “Fuck Them All”. What better title for a song that blows everything up than that? Hell no ! hahahahah And it is by telling them all to fuck off that MORBID SAINT offers a composition that is perfect for torturing quieter souls. There will be no mercy. Your timpani are a playground. In the same vein comes “Bleed Them Dry”, with its sharp guitar picking.

Adding a pinch of melody here and there, “Pine Tuxedo” deceives the listener, before unleashing the beasts on the herd. The end result is a bloodbath. Incredibly violent music. The serial killings continue with the riff storm of “Killer Instinct” and “Psychosis”, tracks that finish the job masterfully. You may disagree with my assessment of this disc, but music for me is measured by the level of discomfort and anger that it brings out in my perception. “Swallowed by Hell” is a hell of a thrash metal album played with blood in its eyes and hatred in its heart. That’s fucking good. Don’t like it? Didn’t agree? Fuuuuuck offffff.

And of course I couldn’t finish without mentioning the cover artwork for this album, which is totally killer and totally connects with the guys’ sound. Of course, this art is signed by the legendary Ed Repka. A must-have album for all thrashers.
