Mais uma vez, pude curtir um evento excepcional no “Come and Take It Live” em Austin (Texas), pagando US$ 29,00 no ingresso (mais ou menos R$ 152 considerando a cotação atual da moeda). O show rolou no domingo 19 de março, um final de tarde frio considerando o início da primavera texana.
Como de costume, cheguei cedo pra estacionar e fazer o esquenta na loja de conveniência vizinha, garantia de cerveja boa, gelada, e barata. Mesmo cedo, já era possível imaginar que a casa lotaria. Faltando uma hora e meia pra abertura das portas o estacionamento já estava praticamente cheio, e com uma fila considerável se formando.
Por volta do horário previsto, às 19:00, as brabas do CRYPTA subiram ao palco e representaram o Brasil com energia e garra absurdas. As quatro fizeram um set curto e certeiro, de aproximadamente meia hora, dominando completamente os metalheads que já abarrotavam a casa.
O showzão das maníacas abriu com “Death Arcana”, seguida por “Possessed” e “Under the Black Wings”, trinca que deixou a audiência boquiaberta com a técnica e pegada matadoras da banda. Fernanda anunciou o som mais veloz do álbum “Echoes of the Soul”, de 2021, a ótima “Starvation”, resultando nos primeiros dos muitos moshpits da noite.
Encerrando com a dupla “Shadow Within” e “From the Ashes”, o CRYPTA concluiu uma carismática e bem-sucedida primeira passagem pela capital do Texas. Tenho certeza de que essa turnê inicial pelos EUA resultará em ótimos frutos e novos convites para o futuro próximo. Destaque: Difícil não mencionar o carisma de “Fernanda Lira”, o trabalho seguro e preciso de “Luana Dametto” atrás do kit e a dupla de guitarristas “Tainá Bergamaschi” e “Jéssica Di Falchi”, tocam pra cacete e fizeram um show impecável.
A banda seguinte foi o SKELETAL REMAINS, que eu vi no ano passado tocando na turnê do IMMOLATION. Se fosse definir o som deles caras em uma única palavra, seria BRUTAL. Ao vivo, a banda reproduz seus temas trogloditas com ainda mais fúria.
Os californianos também não tiveram muito tempo disponível, e fizeram um set extremamente intenso e destruidor. Desde a abertura com “Illusive Divinity”, do trabalho mais recente “The Entombment of Chaos” de 2020, a pista da casa transformou-se numa imensa roda (perigosa para maiores de 45 anos, como este que escreve) e permanente. Resultado: Banho de cerveja e outros líquidos que voaram durante o set, além de alguns empurrões monstro.
“Beyond Cremation” levou adiante o impiedoso banho de sangue, seguida por um dos pontos mais altos do show com a matadora “Devouring Mortality”, som que divide o título com o álbum de 2018. “Tombs of Chaos” e “Congragation of Flesh”, ambas do álbum mais recente, deram números finais à apresentação mais bruta e ensurdecedora da noite.
Vez do grande REVOCATION, banda de Technical Death Metal de Boston que eu nunca havia visto ao vivo, e aguardava ansiosamente. Se você não conhece a banda, decididamente recomendo que confira algum dos álbuns mais recentes. O líder – guitarrista e vocal “David Davidson” é um músico espetacular, disparando riffs e solos incríveis durante toda a apresentação da banda.
O público parecia hipnotizado pela técnica, velocidade e precisão dos caras logo nos primeiros acordes de “Godforsaken”, tema do disco “Netherheaven” de 2022. O quarteto seguiu com “Diabolical Majesty”, som empolgante que abre o mesmo álbum.
“The Outer Ones” quase trouxe a casa abaixo. Esse som tem o nome do disco lançado em 2018, um dos melhores da banda. O show não focou exclusivamente nos dois trabalhos mais recentes, e representou bem a discografia com “Communion”, “Re-Crucified”, “Madness Opus” e a monstruosa “Of Unworldly Origin”, que botou a molecada pra quebrar tudo nos pits mais selvagens do setlist deles. Um puta show foda.
A esse ponto, eu já precisava de uma pausa pra descansar os pés, fazer uma visita rápida ao banheiro da casa e comprar mais cerveja. O bar da casa é ponto excelente de encontro e conversa com os receptivos e fanáticos (por metal) texanos.
Por volta de 21:45, a maior banda de Death Metal da história subiu ao palco. O lendário MORBID ANGEL, com formação nova para a turnê que celebra os 40 anos da banda.
Liderando, o baixista e vocal “Steve Tucker”. Honestamente, curto mais a banda ao vivo com ele do que com “David Vincent”. E sim, já vi a banda em outras oportunidades, incluindo a formação com David e Pete. Ao seu lado, o gênio (e agora grisalho) “Trey Azagthoth” e o ótimo “Dan Vadim Von” nas guitarras além do novo baterista “Charlie Koryn” (ASCENDED DEAD, FUNEBRARUM, entre outras), que se provou uma escolha mais que acertada.
A abertura rolou com o trio de músicas na mesma sequência que inicia o último álbum “Kingdoms Disdained”, de 2017 – “Piles of Little Arms”, “D.E.A.D.” e “Garden of Disdain”. A banda demonstra estar absolutamente à vontade, apesar da nova formação, e isso transparece na performance matadora.
“To the Victor, The Spoils” retorna ao subestimado disco “Gateways…” e eleva a temperatura da casa a níveis intoleráveis. “Paradigms Warped” faz breve retorno ao trabalho mais recente, e antecede a espetacular “Curse the Flesh”, do injustiçado “Heretic”, de 2003. Um dos meus sons preferidos da banda, foi um prazer enorme ouvir os caras detonando essa verdadeira e literal maldição ao vivo. “Praise The Strenght”, do mesmo trabalho, foi igualmente bem recebida pelo público.
A clássica “Abominations” transformou o “Come And Take It Live” num verdadeiro inferno, e foi seguida por “Day of Suffering” e “Unholy Blasphemies”, outras do majestoso “Blessed…”. Meu álbum favorito da banda (Covenant) foi devidamente representado pela épica “Rapture”, em performance devastadora. Retorno majestoso ao “G” com “Ageless, Still I Am” e “Summoning Redemption”. A reta final do show contou com “God of Emptiness” e “Architect and Iconoclast”. Um show absolutamente devastador e inesquecível, fechando um evento impecável com chave de ouro.
O único ponto negativo da apresentação foi, claro, a ausência dos clássicos do “Altars...”, mas já era algo previsto com a formação atual. Um show de qualidade incomparável, que prova que o MORBID ANGEL se confunde com o próprio “Trey” e não há nenhum sentido em tentar replicar o material da banda com quaisquer outras formações sem sua presença.
Hora das considerações finais com a galera no bar, aproveitando que não era tão tarde (mais ou menos 23hs). Foi muito legal testemunhar o quanto as brasileiras do CRYPTA são respeitadas e admiradas no exterior, inúmeros presentes as elogiaram muito, e correram à área de merchandising após o show para adquirir seus itens.

Once again, I was able to enjoy an exceptional event at “Come and Take It Live” in Austin/TX paying US$ 29.00 for the ticket. The show took place on Sunday, March 19th, a cold late afternoon, considering the beginning of the Texas spring.
As usual, I arrived early for parking and warming up at the neighboring convenience store, a reliable source for cold, tasty and cheap beer. Even early, it was already possible to see the house would be packed. At 4:30, the parking lot was almost full, and a considerable queue was already taking shape.
Around the schedule 19:00, the fierce Amazons of CRYPTA took the stage and represented Brazilian Metal with absurd energy and determination. They played a short and sharp set, of approximately half an hour, completely dominating the metalheads who already crowded the house.
The fiery ladies opened with “Death Arcana”, followed by “Possessed” and “Under the Black Wings”, a trio that left the audience awestruck by the band’s killer technique and drive. Fernanda announced the fastest sound on the debut album “Echoes of the Soul” (2021), the overpowering “Starvation”, resulting in the first of the evening’s countless moshpits.
Closing with the duo “Shadow Within” and “From the Ashes”, CRYPTA concluded a charismatic and successful first tour of the Texas capital. I am sure that this initial US tour will bear fruit and new invitations in the near future. Highlights: Hard not to mention “Fernanda Lira’s” charisma, the safe and precise clockwork aka “Luana Dametto” behind the kit and the sharp guitarist duo “Tainá Bergamaschi” and “Jéssica Di Falchi”, putting on a impeccable show.
The next act was SKELETAL REMAINS, which I had gladly watched last year playing the IMMOLATION tour. If I were to define their sound in just one word, it would be BRUTAL. When playing live, the band reproduces their troglodyte themes with even more fury and vitriol.
The Californians didn’t have much time available as well, and fired an extremely intense and destructive set. Since the opening “Illusive Divinity”, off the most recent record “The Entombment of Chaos”, the venue has become an immense, constant pit (highly dangerous for anyone over 45 years old, as myself). Had to bear the consequences: An unpleasant beer shower, enriched by other liquids and fluids that flew during the set, plus a few nasty elbows.
“Beyond Cremation” continued the merciless bloodbath, followed by one of the highlights of the show, the killer “Devouring Mortality” (title track off the 2018 album), “Tombs of Chaos” and “Congragation of Flesh”, both from the most recent album, which gave final numbers to the most brutish and deafening performance of the evening.
It was time for the great REVOCATION, a technical death metal squad hailing from Boston that I had never seen live and was looking forward to. If you’re not familiar with the band, I definitely recommend checking out one of their more recent albums. The leader – guitarist and vocalist “David Davidson” is a spectacular musician, shooting incredible riffs and solos throughout the performance.
The audience seemed hypnotized by the technique, speed and precision since the first chords of “Godforsaken”, a theme off the 2022 album “Netherheaven”. The quartet followed with “Diabolical Majesty”, an exciting track which opens the same record.
“The Outer Ones” reinstated mayhem all around. This piece is named after the album released in 2018, one of the band’s finest. The show did not focus exclusively on the two most recent works, and represented the discography well with “Communion”, “Re-Crucified”, “Madness Opus” and the monstrous “Of Unworldly Origin”, which compelled kids to break everything (and everyone) in the moshpits. It was one hell of a fucking show.
At this point, I already needed a break to rest my feet, make a quick visit to the bathroom and a few more beers. The venue’s bar is an excellent meeting point, perfect for a chat with the receptive and friendly Texan fanatics (for metal).
Around 9:45, the greatest death metal band in history took the stage. The legendary MORBID ANGEL, with a new lineup for the tour celebrating the band’s 40th anniversary.
Leading the way, bassist and vocalist “Steve Tucker”. Honestly, I enjoy the live band better with him than with “David Vincent”. And yes, I’ve seen the band on other occasions, including a formation with both Dave and Pete. By his side, the genius “Trey Azagthoth” and the effective “Dan Vadim Von” on guitars, as well as the exceptional new drummer “Charlie Koryn” (ASCENDED DEAD, FUNEBRARUM, among others), who proved to be a perfect fit.
Kicking off, the trio of songs in the same sequence which starts the last album “Kingdoms Disdained”, from 2017 – “Piles of Little Arms”, “D.E.A.D.” and “Garden of Disdain”. The band seems to be absolutely at ease despite the new formation, as the killer performance goes on.
“To the Victor, The Spoils” takes us to the underrated “Gateways…” album and raises the temperature of the house to intolerable levels. “Paradigms Warped” makes a brief return to their most recent record, and precedes the spectacular “Curse the Flesh”, from the underrated “Heretic” (2003). One of my favorite songs by the band, it was a great pleasure to witness their live version of this true and spiteful curse. “Praise The Strength”, from the same album, was equally well received by the crowd.
The classic “Abominations” turned “Come And Take It Live” into a living hell, and was followed by “Day of Suffering” and “Unholy Blasphemies”, others off the majestic “Blessed…”. My favorite album by the band (Covenant) was properly represented by the epic “Rapture”, in a devastating performance. Majestic return to “G” with “Ageless, Still I Am” and “Summoning Redemption”. The final stretch of the show featured “God of Emptiness” and “Architect and Iconoclast”. An absolutely devastating and unforgettable show, closing an impeccable event the best possible way.
The only negative point of the presentation was, of course, the absence of the classics off “Altars…”, something normal with the current lineup. A show of top-notch quality, which proves that MORBID ANGEL, in reality. confuses itself with “Trey” himself, and there is no point in trying to replicate the band’s material with any other formations without his presence.
Time for final considerations with the new friends at the bar, as it wasn’t so late (around 11 pm). It was really cool, as a Brazilian, to see how much CRYPTA are respected and admired abroad. Got to talk to several people in attendance who really praised them, and many who ran to the merchandising area after the show to get a few of their items.
