MAVORIM – Ab Amitia Pulsae (CD 2023)

O MAVORIM vem se destacando, a partir de 2014, como um dos atos mais interessantes e consistentes do Black Metal Alemão. A dupla “Baptist” e “Valfor” é profundamente criativa, e investe no desenvolvimento de uma sonoridade isenta de barreiras.

 A tradição está mantida, e o aguardado quarto registro de estúdio está prestes a ser lançado mundialmente, batizado em latim (assim como os anteriores) “Ab Amitia Pulsae”. O selo germânico “Purity Through Fire” segue responsável pelas versões físicas, oferecendo CDs, uma versão limitada em Digipack A5 e versões em Vinil.   

 Aos não iniciados, o Black Metal do MAVORIM soa como uma amálgama contraditória de crueza, brutalidade, melodia, elementos Pagan / Folk, intervenções de teclados e sintetizadores, vocais ríspidos e corais estrategicamente posicionados, guitarras sujas e a “dureza” que tradicionalmente estigmatiza as formações germânicas do estilo.

 O clima inicial é sobrenatural, sombrio e enigmático sob a introdução “Zeitgeist”, sobretudo quando uma sirene começa a repetir-se ao fundo. É uma prévia apocalíptica para a seguinte “Ein Zerrbild aller Leiden” ou “Uma Caricatura para todo o sofrimento”, de guitarras melodicamente bizarras e vocais em coral com pegada mais Folk.

 “Das Joch der Schande” é mais insidiosa, maléfica e de ritmo bem-marcado. Ótimos riffs base e teclados pontuais inteligentes. As melodias proporcionadas pelas guitarras são memoráveis, ainda que bastante simples. Já em “Bis nur noch Knochen übrig bleibt”, a batida inicial é ritualística, acompanhada de sintetizadores macabros. Esse som fica bem mais legal a partir dos dois minutos, quando dá uma guinada, em princípio, extrema. O que se segue é uma passagem atmosférica das mais introspectivas, que progride e se torna uma verdadeira viagem sônica de seis minutos e meio.  

 A encarnação mais ríspida e grotesca do MAVORIM vira sua cabeça e fixa o olhar no ouvinte com a brilhante “Was des Lebens nicht wert” (O que a vida não vale), um hino odioso e viciante em medidas equivalentes. Que riffs, senhoras e senhores!

 Não se deixe enganar pelo início lúdico de “Zerrinne im Nichts”, outro grande destaque individual da obra. Composição de guitarras gélidas certeiras, vocais inspirados e ganchos irresistíveis, o tipo de música que ficará foda ao vivo. 

 A esse ponto, o jogo já está ganho. Eis que a dupla saca da cartola “Die andere Seite deines Traumes” (O outro lado do seu sonho), outra de suas visões monstruosas, disformes e excêntricas do Black Metal Teutônico.

 Na curta “Unter den Mühlen der Zeit” (Sob os moinhos do tempo) a sonoridade ganha ares mais sisudos mesmo com as notas melodiosas persistentes. Do meio em diante, lembra bastante o infame GRAND BELIAL’S KEY (EUA) em alguns momentos.

 Em contraponto, a faixa mais extensa do Play. Também agrada muito a passada mais cadenciada, solene e algo épica de “Das Schluchzen und Wimmern”. Na contramão, a urgente e desesperada “Erlischt für immer nun das Licht” anuncia com veemência uma luz que se extingue para sempre.

“Endzeit” é a instrumental de teclados e efeitos sonoros que finaliza o trampo, pregando com seu título o fim dos tempos. Digna de trilha sonora de filmes (bons) de terror.

 “Ab Amitia Pulsae” é mais um excelente disco de estúdio do MAVORIM, um pouco extenso acima de 50 minutos porém entregando qualidade de ponta a ponta. Trabalho que solidifica o duo no topo do Black Metal da Alemanha e, por extensão, do mundo.

MAVORIM have been standing out since 2014, growing as one of the most interesting and consistent German Black Metal acts. The duo “Baptist” and “Valfor” is deeply creative, and invests in the development of a barrier-free extreme sound.

  Tradition is safe, as the long-awaited fourth studio record is about to be released worldwide, baptized in Latin (just like the previous three) “Ab Amitia Pulsae”. German label “Purity Through Fire” is once again responsible for the physical material, offering CDs, a limited Digipack A5 edition and Vinyl versions.

  To the uninitiated, MAVORIM’s Black Metal sounds like a contradictory amalgamation of rawness, brutality, melody, Pagan / Folk elements, keyboard and synthesizer interventions, harsh vocals and strategically placed choirs, dirty guitars and the “hardness” that traditionally stigmatizes the Germanic formations under the subgenre.

  The initial atmosphere is supernatural, dark, and enigmatic with “Zeitgeist” intro, especially when a siren starts sounding in the background. It’s an apocalyptic preview for the following “Ein Zerrbild aller Leiden” or “A Caricature for All Suffering“, offering melodically bizarre guitars and choral vocals with a more “Folkish” approach.

  “Das Joch der Schande” is a more insidious, malevolent, and rhythmic track. It packs great riffs and smart occasional keyboards. The melodies provided by the guitars are memorable, yet quite simple. In “Bis nur noch Knochen übrig bleibt”, the initial beat is ritualistic, accompanied by macabre synthesizers. This piece gets way more interesting after two minutes, when it takes an initially extreme turn. What follows is a most introspective atmospheric section, which progresses to become a true six-and-a-half-minute sonic journey.

  MAVORIM’s harshest and most grotesque incarnation turns its ugly head and fixes its gaze on the listener with brilliant “Was des Lebens nicht wert” (What Life Isn’t Worth), an anthem that is both addictive and odious in equal measure. Pay attention to those riffs, ladies and gentlemen!

  Don’t be fooled by the harmless opening of “Zerrinne im Nichts”, another of the album’s highlight. Composed with icy cold guitars, inspired vocals and irresistible hooks, it’s the kind of song bound to be a killer live piece.

  At this point, victory is at hand. But behold, the duo pulls another great trick with “Die andere Seite deines Traumes” (The other side of your dream), another of their monstrous, eccentric visions of Teutonic Black Metal.

  On the shorter “Unter den Mühlen der Zeit” (Under the mills of time), sound takes on a more serious tone, even with the persistent melodious notes. From its middle onwards, it is quite reminiscent of the infamous GRAND BELIAL’S KEY (USA) at several moments.

  In contrast, there comes the record’s longest track: The more cadenced, solemn and somewhat epic “Das Schluchzen und Wimmern”. Moving in the opposite direction, the urgent and desperate “Erlischt für immer nun das Licht” vehemently announces a light that is forever extinguished.

“Endzeit” is the keyboards-driven instrumental which ends the set, preaching with its title the end of times. Worthy of a (good) horror flick soundtrack.

  “Ab Amitia Pulsae” is yet another excellent studio album by MAVORIM, a bit extensive going over 50 minutes, but delivering quality throughout the listening. A Work which solidifies the duo at the top of Black Metal in Germany and, by extension, the world.

  Highly recommended for fans of EISENKULT (GER) – Check it out in case you haven’t, it’s another quality project by the duo, FARSOT (GER), LUNAR AURORA (GER), THE RUINS OF BEVERAST (GER), CHAPEL OF DISEASE (GER), ABSURD (GER).
