MARRASMIELI – Martaiden Mailta (CD 2022)

Quando ouço falar em Pagan Black Metal, a Finlândia é o primeiro país que me vem à mente. Afinal, é o lar de MOONSORROW, do poderoso HAVUKRUUNU (melhor banda de Pagan Black da atualidade), WYRD, HÄIVE, PAARA, GOATMOON, NORRHEM, ANCESTORS BLOOD, além dessa magnífica MARRASMIELI.

 A formação existe desde 2018, e atraiu minha atenção em 2020, quando lançou o seu excelente álbum de estreia “Between Land and Sky”. Os caras fazem um som extremamente potente, com melodias ricas e cativantes, escapando de todas as armadilhas possíveis que o subgênero apresenta aos músicos, sejam eles menos ou mais experientes.

 Após a estreia bem-sucedida, a banda disponibilizou em abril desse ano seu segundo trabalho completo de estúdio, intitulado “Martaiden Mailta”, tendo mais uma vez a gravadora finlandesa “Naturmacht Productions” como parceira.

 No novo trabalho, a banda acerta em cheio de novo. Produção primorosa, vocais em coro limitados e utilizados com precisão, bem como as intervenções dos instrumentos folk. As melodias têm bom gosto, não há teclados inundando o som ou lutando contra os demais instrumentos, não há exageros.

 A instrumental “Frozen, Far North” poderia até ser uma intro inofensiva, mas funciona muito melhor que isso como um breve ataque pagão e sombrio, de agressividade incomum, do tipo que prepara o ouvinte para algo grandioso.

 “The Forest of My Soul” demonstra, ao longo dos seus dez minutos, a qualidade inequívoca da fusão que o MARRASMIELI proporciona, unindo Black Melódico aos elementos Folk e Pagan com maestria. Grande som, de segmento final bastante atmosférico e apoteótico.

 Em “Ghosts of Future and Past” guitarras acústicas e um acordeão melancólico abrem os trabalhos, tendo efeitos sonoros diversos ao fundo. As guitarras disparam riffs excepcionais, entrelaçados por melodias exóticas, concebidas por instrumentos folk de corda e um marcante som de acordeão. Majestosa faixa, que apresenta agressividade e pesar em medidas similares.

 Já em “The Oaks of England” o clima é triunfante, ainda que significativamente colérico e belicoso. As partes mais agressivas me remeteram ao fantástico WINTERFYLLETH (GBR). A faixa tem partes declamadas em inglês arcaico, retiradas do poema “The Battle of Maldon”. Pra quem curte os corais épicos e a atmosfera vitoriosa, essa é a música. Ressalto, tudo aqui é composto e executado com extremo bom gosto (que show das guitarras e do batera!).

 Finalizando o álbum, temos “Far in the Frozen North” e seus impressionantes dezessete minutos. Conta uma história dividida em quatro partes, com frases em inglês e finlandês. Seu início mais atmosférico é finamente construído, abrindo caminho para estruturas épicas que se superam, consecutivamente, em termos de emoção. Há belíssimas linhas de baixo, guitarras duelando e teclados exuberantes. Os andamentos variam muito, desde passagens lentas e médias às acelerações vertiginosas e letais. Uma conclusão de fato grandiosa.

 Um dos melhores álbuns do estilo lançados em 2022, senão o melhor, o novo MARRASMIELI é memorável. Trabalho indispensável aos fãs de NOKTURNAL MORTUM (UCR), SAOR (GBR), WINTERFYLLETH (GBR), HORN (ALE), HAVUKRUUNU (FIN), KRODA (UCR), HÄIVE (FIN).

 When people talk about Pagan Black Metal, Finland is the first country that comes to my mind. After all, it is home to MOONSORROW, the mighty HAVUKRUUNU (best Pagan Black band nowadays), WYRD, HÄIVE, PAARA, GOATMOON, NORRHEM, ANCESTORS BLOOD, in addition to this magnificent MARRASMIELI.

 The group has been around since 2018, and they caught my attention in 2020 when they released their excellent debut album “Between Land and Sky”. These guys produce an extremely powerful sound, with rich and captivating melodies, escaping all the possible traps that the subgenre presents to musicians, whether they are less or more seasoned.

 After the successful debut, the band released in April this year their second full-length studio record, entitled “Martaiden Mailta”, having once again the Finnish label “Naturmacht Productions” as partners.

 In the new Opus, the band hits the nail in the head again. Impeccable production, intelligent, limited, and accurate use of chorus vocals, as well as folk music instruments interventions. All melodies have great taste, there’s no overuse of keyboards flooding the sound or battling the other instruments, no exaggerations at all.

 Instrumental “Frozen, Far North” could be a harmless intro, but it works much better than that as a brief, dark, pagan attack of unusual aggression, the kind that braces the listener for something great.

 “The Forest of My Soul” demonstrates, throughout its ten minutes, the unmistakable quality of the fusion provided by MARRASMIELI, masterfully blending Melodic Black with Folk and Pagan elements. Superb sound, with a very atmospheric and apotheotic final section.

 In “Ghosts of Future and Past” acoustic guitars and a melancholic accordion open the works, with assorted sound effects in the background. The guitars shoot exceptional riffs, intertwined with exotic melodies, conceived by folk string instruments and a striking accordion sound. Majestic piece, presenting aggressiveness and grief in matching measures.

 In “The Oaks of England” the mood is triumphant, albeit significantly choleric and bellicose. The most aggressive parts reminded me of the fantastic WINTERFYLLETH (GBR). The track has parts recited in Old English, taken from the poem “The Battle of Maldon”. For those who enjoy the epic choirs and victorious atmosphere, this is your song. I emphasize, everything here is composed with great taste and elegantly performed.

 Rounding out the album is “Far in the Frozen North” with its impressive seventeen minutes. It tells a story divided into four parts, with sentences in English and Finnish. Its most atmospheric beginning is finely constructed, paving the way for epic structures that consecutively surpass each other in emotion. There are gorgeous bass lines, dueling guitars and lush keyboards. Tempos vary widely, from slow and medium passages to dizzying and lethal accelerations. A truly grand conclusion.

 One of the best 2022 Pagan/Folk Black Metal albums, if not the best, the new MARRASMIELI is memorable. Indispensable work for fans of NOKTURNAL MORTUM (UKR), SAOR (GBR), WINTERFYLLETH (GBR), HORN (GER), HAVUKRUUNU (FIN), KRODA (UKR), HÄIVE (FIN).
