INCANTATION – Unholy Deification (2023)

O INCANTATION dispensa apresentações. Ponto. Se você diz gostar de death metal e não conhece esses caras e sua música, há algo muito errado acontecendo. “Unholy Deification” é o décimo terceiro álbum da carreira desse grupo originário de New Jersey e a impressão que me causou e que é confirmada a cada álbum lançado, é que o INCANTATION só melhora com o tempo e a experiência acumulada.

Todos os últimos álbuns da banda vem mostrando que eles não tem absolutamente nenhuma intenção de diminuir o seu ritmo ou alterar a sua música. Tudo é feito milimetricamente para destruir seus tímpanos e causar o máximo de destruição ao redor de quem se dedica a ouvir os álbuns que vão sendo lançados. E com “Unholy Deification” essa máxima não perdeu força. Essa álbum, fazendo uma análise mais geral, é ainda mais sólido e poderoso do que o anterior “Sect Vile Divinities”, lançado em 2020.

Começando pela produção que é pesada, deliberadamente “suja” e brutal, mas que ainda assim permite ao ouvinte “saborear” cada composição que derrete os auto falantes de seu aparelho de som. Algo que me agradou muito foi a duração das músicas nesse novo álbum. Com exceção da última faixa “Circle (Eye of Ascension) VII”, que tem quase seis minutos, todas as outras faixas se encontram abaixo dos cinco minutos de duração, concedendo dinamicidade e um sentido de urgência que se conecta muito bem com a brutalidade que caracteriza desde sempre o som do INCANTATION.

Os vocais de John McEntee só melhoraram com esse tempo todo em que ele decidiu assumir os vocais da banda e a criação musical desse álbum também se destaca.

Todo o álbum é uma celebração ao metal da morte, com a sonoridade típica do INCANTATION. “Offerings (The Swarm) IV” é a faixa de abertura e traz velocidade na medida certa e momentos mais pesados, com grandes riffs.

A segunda faixa é “Concordat (The Pact) I”, essa aqui soando o mais puro INCANTION possível. Os andamentos ritmícios em meio tempo, os “apitos” na guitarra, os riffs mais obscuros e tudo sendo guiado pela podridão dos vocais, que são massacrados pela bateria bate estaca que se apresenta. “Homunculus (Spirit Made Flesh) IX” e “Invocation (Chthonic Merge) X” são brutas e contudentes em doses nem um pouco homeopáticas. Inclusive na segunda é possível perceber uma dose de complexidade e maldade extras que me lembram o não menos poderoso Immolation.

Uma das melhores faixas do álbum é a maléfica “Megaron (Sunken Chamber) VI”, com um peso avassalador e riffs com uma atmosfera de desesperança. “Convulse (Words of Power) III” é a música que irá colocar todos para bater cabeça nos shows do INCANTATION. Contida, mas nem um pouco leve. Grandes riffs.

Uma boa dose de desconforto se instala durante a execução de “Altar (Unify in Carnage) V”. Os riffs são tocados com menos previsibilidade e soam desconcertantes, criando um clima denso.

A penúltima música é “Exile (Defy the False) II” e ela vai direto para as melhores com sua intensidade, entrega de grandes climas e riffs. “Unholy Deification” se encerra com a longa “Circle (Eye of Ascension)VII”, que se inicia de forma opressiva, lenta, uma trilha sonora construída com cuidado para assombrar qualquer poser que se atreva a adentrar os domínios do INCANTATION.

O INCANTATION mais uma vez entrega um grande lançamento, com qualidade inegável e com total respeito ao death metal. Um álbum para ficar por um tempo no playlist.

INCANTATION needs no introduction. Full stop. If you say you like death metal and you don’t know these guys and their music, there’s something very wrong. “Unholy Deification” is the thirteenth album in the career of this group from New Jersey and the impression I got, which is confirmed with each album released, is that INCANTATION only gets better with time and accumulated experience.

All the band’s latest albums show that they have absolutely no intention of slowing down or altering their music. Everything is done millimetrically to destroy your eardrums and cause maximum destruction around those who dedicate themselves to listening to the albums that are being released. And with “Unholy Deification” this maxim hasn’t lost its strength. This album, when analysed more generally, is even more solid and powerful than the previous “Sect Vile Divinities”, released in 2020.

Starting with the production, which is heavy, deliberately “dirty” and brutal, but still allows the listener to “savour” each composition that melts the speakers of their stereo. Something I really liked was the length of the songs on this new album. With the exception of the last track “Circle (Eye of Ascension) VII”, which is almost six minutes long, all the other tracks are under five minutes long, providing dynamism and a sense of urgency that connects very well with the brutality that has always characterised INCANTATION‘s sound.

John McEntee’s vocals have only improved in the time since he decided to take over the band’s vocals, and the musical creation of this album also stands out.

The whole album is a celebration of death metal, with the typical INCANTATION sound. “Offerings (The Swarm) IV” is the opening track and brings just the right amount of speed and heavier moments, with great riffs.

The second track is “Concordat (The Pact) I”, this one sounding as pure INCANTATION as possible. The rhythmic half-time tempos, the guitar “whistles”, the darker riffs and everything is guided by the rottenness of the vocals, which are massacred by the pounding drums. “Homunculus (Spirit Made Flesh) IX” and “Invocation (Chthonic Merge) X” are brutal and forceful in doses that are not at all homeopathic. Even on the second track, you can see an extra dose of complexity and evil that reminds me of the no less powerful Immolation.

One of the best tracks on the album is the evil “Megaron (Sunken Chamber) VI”, with its overwhelming heaviness and riffs with an atmosphere of hopelessness. “Convulse (Words of Power) III” is the song that will get everyone headbanging at INCANTATION gigs. Restrained, but not at all light. Great riffs.

A good dose of discomfort sets in during the performance of “Altar (Unify in Carnage) V”. The riffs are played with less predictability and sound disconcerting, creating a dense atmosphere.

The next song is “Exile (Defy the False) II” and it goes straight to the top with its intensity, delivery of great climaxes and riffs. “Unholy Deification” closes with the long “Circle (Eye of Ascension)VII”, which begins in an oppressive, slow way, a soundtrack carefully constructed to haunt any poser who dares to enter INCANTATION‘s domains.

INCANTATION has once again delivered a great album, with undeniable quality and total respect for death metal. An album to keep in your playlist for a while.
