Os Canadenses GRENADIER não têm muito tempo na ativa, ao menos sob este nome. Mesmo desconhecidos, com apenas uma Demo de 2021 no cartel, lançaram em julho desse ano o seu primeiro álbum de estúdio, o glorioso “Trumpets Blare in Blazing Glory”, o melhor disco de Death Metal Melódico de 2022 que eu ouvi até aqui.
A primeira coisa que fica muito clara quando o Play começa a rolar, é que os caras são muito fãs do polêmico ARGHOSLENT (EUA), a ponto da pegada ser automaticamente reconhecível a partir da primeira faixa. A capa já denunciava, honestamente. Dei uma boa lida nas letras e não encontrei nenhum conteúdo de cunho racista, portanto creio que a admiração deva estar limitada ao som mesmo (assim espero).
A inspiração lírica é toda histórica / militar, obtida de inúmeros combates antigos envolvendo impérios invasores e os povos locais que se defendiam como podiam, visando a repelir os ataques, expulsar o inimigo e reconquistar território.
O mais importante é que o som da banda é um Death Metal Melódico extremamente bem-feito e pungente, típico dos raros grupos do subgênero que não perderam seus testículos ao longo do caminho. O quinteto faz um ótimo trabalho instrumental, destacando-se a dupla de guitarras e o batera.
Os vocais guturais de “A.S.” (NOCTURNAL PRAYER) são ininterruptamente brutais e bem postados, cumprindo com veemência o seu papel e liderando a carga.
O trabalho flui com muita naturalidade, as faixas são homogêneas em termos de qualidade. Ainda assim, vale destacar algumas das músicas: A primeira “Atrocity Cycle” mergulha o ouvinte no mundo marcial do GRENADIER com primazia, energia contagiante e melodias grudentas.
“Commending the Imperial” é menos veloz, com segmentos até bastante arrastados e altamente épicos, que habitualmente antecedem acelerações triunfantes. “The Napoleonic Code” tem guitarras majestosas de ponta a ponta. Sua sucessora “The Levant Sultanate” é, provavelmente, a faixa mais cativante, com dobras de guitarra efetivas e ritmo quase sempre arrebatador.
Excelente álbum de estreia do GRENADIER. Os jovens canadenses mostraram rapidamente que conhecem muito sobre o subgênero, e entregaram um belíssimo material autoral. É banda que merece um acompanhamento de perto, porque promete demais.
Disco obrigatório pra quem curte Death Metal Melódico agressivo e de temática militar, na linha de ARGHOSLENT (EUA), HOUSE OF ATREUS (EUA), SACRIPHYX (AUS), ARES KINGDOM (EUA), KANONENFIEBER (ALE).

The Canadians behind GRENADIER haven’t been around for long, at least under such moniker. Quite unknown, and carrying only a 2021 Demo under their belt, they have released their first studio full album in July, the glorious “Trumpets Blare in Blazing Glory”, best 2022 Melodic Death Metal album I listened to up to this point.
The first thing that becomes very clear when it starts playing, is that these gents seem to be remarkably fond of the controversial ARGHOSLENT (USA), to the point where the trademark sound is automatically recognizable from track one. Yes, the cover art was clearly a sign. I gave the lyrics a good read and didn’t find any racist content, so I believe the admiration should be limited to the sound itself (or so I hope).
The lyrical inspiration is all historical / military, obtained from countless ancient combats, mostly involving invading empires and local people who defended themselves as best as they could, aiming to repel the attacks, expel the enemy and reconquer territory.
Most importantly, the band’s sound is extremely well-crafted and poignant Melodic Death Metal, typical of the rare groups in the subgenre that haven’t lost their testicles along the way. The quintet does a superb instrumental job, and I highlight the guitar duo and drummer.
The guttural vocals of “A.S.” (NOCTURNAL PRAYER) are non-stop brutal and well-placed, vehemently fulfilling their role and leading the charge.
The work flows very naturally, as the tracks are homogeneous in terms of quality. Still, it is worth highlighting a few of the songs: Opening act “Atrocity Cycle” immerses the listener in the martial world of GRENADIER with primacy, contagious energy, and decidedly catchy melodies.
“Commending the Imperial” rolls slower, with highly epic, sluggish segments, which usually precede triumphant accelerations. “The Napoleonic Code” has majestic guitars from start to finish. Its follow-up “The Levant Sultanate” is probably the catchiest track, with effective guitar doubles and offering a prevailing ravishing rhythm.
An excellent debut album by GRENADIER. The young Canadians quickly showed that they do know their Melodic Death Metal, and delivered a beautiful, yet somewhat short first full-length. It’s most definitely a promising band, one which deserves to be closely followed.
Highly enjoyable, highly recommended for anyone who digs aggressive and military-themed Melodic Death Metal, along the lines of ARGHOSLENT (USA), HOUSE OF ATREUS (USA), SACRIPHYX (AUS), ARES KINGDOM (USA), KANONENFIEBER (GER).
