FOSSILIZATION – Leprous Daylight (Adv. 2023)

Cara, que orgulho dá ouvir uma banda de conterrâneos lançado um álbum como esse que o FOSSILIZATION nos presenteia. O press release traz uma declaração da banda em que fala um pouco sobre como o processo de criação do debut álbum seria em termos musicais e lá havia a informação de que esse trabalho seria realmente um outro nível de brutalidade. Agora, com o álbum em mãos, tudo faz sentido, ainda que esse sentido seja atacado violentamente a partir do primeiro segundo de música até o momento em que o silêncio se pronuncia.

A audição de “Leprous Daylight” é uma experiência transcendental que envolve brutalidade, um enorme bom gosto estético do ponto de vista musical e altas doses da selvageria que é inerente ao metal extremo brasileiro desde os seus primórdios.

Um fato aqui é inegável. A complexidade criativa foi para um outro nível e fez que o FOSSILIZATION se colocasse em pé de igualdade com qualquer nome do death metal mundial atualmente.

Quando você aperta o play e ouve a faixa introdutória “Archaean Gateway”, você não está preparado para a avalanche que se segue quando a música “Once Was God” é disparada como se fosse um míssel na sua cara. A faixa é totalmente avassaladora, brutal, complexa e dissonante. Há muito do velho Incantation aqui, assim como em todo o álbum, mas obviamente, muito do death metal atual, bebendo de fontes como Dead Congregation, Krypts, Bölzer, entre outros. Mas o que adiciona um sabor a mais é aquele ódio inerente que transborda do metal extremo brasileiro, algo difícil de emular se você não nasceu e cresceu por aqui.

Essa selvageria é uma fonte inesgotável de maldade e sentimentos de desconforto. Não se trata apenas de velocidade, mas também de uma ambientação onde a tensão é quase palpável. “Oracle of Reversion” começa e tudo vem abaixo envolto em fumaça e escombros. Isso aqui é incrivelmente brutal e oferece riffs que são a manifestação da escuridão. Puro metal da morte e certamente não indicado para ouvidos mais sensíveis.

O banho de sangue continua com a impiedosa “At the Heart of the Nest”, uma faixa dura e direta, com excelentes riffs e uma linha de bateria que é puro caos. Gostei bastante de algumas linhas melódicas que são inseridas no decorrer da composição. Na sequência vem a colossal faixa título “Leprous Daylight”, para mim, a faixa que define e representa o que é a música do FOSSILIZATION. Cara, que composição monstruosa. São cerca de cinco minutos de bombardeio incessante, onde tudo é obliterado por ondas de choque. O resultado vai além da manifestação musical.

Na mesma direção e com a linha de frente em contínuo ataque vem “The Night Spoke the Tongue of Flames”, outra faixa que vai destruindo tudo sem parcimônia.

“Eon” já havia sido divulgada digitalmente e foi um dos aperitivos para conhecer o que a banda vinha criando. Acho que essa composição oferece um nível de experimentalismo nas camadas de agressão que lembram o enigmático Bölzer, mas elevando tudo a outros patamares de violência musical. Um outra música que se destaca com certeza. As partes mais lentas são incríveis.

O álbum se encerra com “Wrought in the Abyss”, que começa com uma atmosférica fantasmagórica, criada a partir de um riff sinistro e uma linha de bateria hipnótica. A faixa começa opressiva, um death doom metal mortal e vai intensificando em alguns momentos. Nem sempre a velocidade é imprescindível. Música matadora.

Enquanto muita gente só enxerga o mainstream nacional e sua briga mesquinha de egos e competições de quem tem o maior pau musical, o cenário subterrâneo brasileiro segue evoluindo, ganhando experiência e criando nomes como o FOSSILIZATION. Não tenho dúvidas que “Leprous Daylight” será o álbum de death metal brasileiro do ano. Difícil bater isso aqui.

Man, how proud I am to hear a band from my homeland releasing an album like the one FOSSILIZATION is giving us.
The press release contains a statement from the band in which they talk a little about how the process of creating the debut album would be in musical terms and there was information that this work would really be another level of brutality. Now, with the album in hand, everything makes sense, even if that sense is violently attacked from the first second of the song until the moment silence is pronounced.

Listening to “Leprous Daylight” is a transcendental experience that involves brutality, an extremely good aesthetic taste from a musical point of view and high doses of the savagery that has been inherent in Brazilian extreme metal since its beginnings.

One fact is undeniable. The creative complexity has gone to another level and has put FOSSILIZATION on a par with any death metal band in the world today.

When you press play and listen to the introductory track “Archaean Gateway”, you’re not prepared for the avalanche that follows when the song “Once Was God” is fired like a missile into your face. The track is totally overwhelming, brutal, complex and dissonant. There’s a lot of old Incantation here, as there is throughout the album, but obviously a lot of today’s death metal, drawing from sources such as Dead Congregation, Krypts, Bölzer and others. But what adds extra flavour is that inherent hatred that overflows from Brazilian extreme metal, something that is hard to emulate if you weren’t born and raised here.

This savagery is an inexhaustible source of evil and feelings of discomfort. It’s not just about speed, but also a setting where the tension is almost palpable. “Oracle of Reversion” begins and everything comes crashing down in smoke and rubble. It’s incredibly brutal and offers riffs that are the manifestation of darkness. Pure death metal and certainly not suitable for sensitive ears.

The bloodbath continues with the merciless “At the Heart of the Nest”, a hard and direct track with excellent riffs and a drum line that is pure chaos. I really liked some of the melodic lines that are inserted throughout the composition. Then comes the colossal title track “Leprous Daylight”, for me the track that defines and represents what FOSSILIZATION‘s music is all about. Man, what a monstrous composition. It’s about five minutes of incessant bombardment, where everything is obliterated by shockwaves. The result goes beyond the musical manifestation.

In the same direction and with the front line in continuous attack comes “The Night Spoke the Tongue of Flames”, another track that destroys everything without parsimony.

“Eon” had already been released digitally and was one of the appetisers to get to know what the band had been creating. I think this composition offers a level of experimentalism in the layers of aggression reminiscent of the enigmatic Bölzer, but taking everything to new heights of musical violence. Another song that certainly stands out. The slower parts are incredible.

The album closes with “Wrought in the Abyss”, which begins with a ghostly atmosphere, created from a sinister riff and a hypnotic drum line. The track starts out oppressive, a deadly death doom metal and intensifies at times. Speed isn’t always essential. Killer music.

While many people only see the Brazilian mainstream and its petty egos and competitions over who has the biggest musical stick, the Brazilian underground scene continues to evolve, gaining experience and creating names like FOSSILIZATION. I have no doubt that “Leprous Daylight” will be the Brazilian death metal album of the year. Hard to beat that here.
