DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE – Spiralling to Lunacy (Adv. CD 2023)

O DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE é um nome novo para mim e foi uma grata surpresa vinda do cenário death metal canadense. A banda foi formada em 2010 com o intuito de explorar um brutal e old school death metal com forte pegada dos anos 90 e creio que posso confirmar, após ouvir esse “Spiralling to Lunacy”, que a banda alcança com maestria esse objetivo.

Como o próprio press-release aponta, é possível perceber influências que unem sonoridades americana e europeias. Ainda que o som seja brutal e definitivamente old school, há elementos mais melódicos inseridos nas músicas que, por exemplo, me lembraram os trabalhos mais clássicos do Edge of Sanity. Isso fica bem claro na execução da excelente faixa título “Spiralling to Lunacy”.

O trabalho realizado pelas guitarras nesse álbum são um destaque, com riffs impactantes e principalmente uma pegada que confere um grande peso e agressão às músicas do álbum. A qualidade realmente é gritante nas composições, assim como a atmosfera densa criada em faixas como “Within the Darkness”, uma instrumental que serve como introdução ao álbum e que vai funcionar muito bem ao vivo.

“The Demons That Be” é uma faixa mais direta, com riffs poderosos. “Condemnation Through Fear” une bem as partes rápidas com momentos mais pesados, que soam quase como um doom death. O resultado é impactante.

Esse flerte com o peso e a velocidade reduzida cria composições que ganham mais destaque, como no caso de “Silencing the Masses”, cuja aura quase doom em alguns momentos me remeteu ao velho Paradise Lost.

“Products of Pain” é uma das melhores do álbum . Ela usa de forma muito eficiente a velocidade e a melodia. A vocalização é uma cola que une tudo em uma grande faixa.

A próxima faixa bate mais forte. “New Normal Nihilist” vai por um caminho mais tradicional e une bem a rispidez do death metal americano com o melodia do death metal europeu. “Freedom of Death” é a faixa que eu realmente fiquei ouvindo algumas vezes seguidas. Os riffs são pegajosos, tem um refrão absolutamente esmagador. Um verdadeiro metal da morte na tradição dos velhos tempos.

O álbum finaliza com “False Reconciliation” e encerra uma sequência death metálica realmente de qualidade acima da média. O ponto mais importante a ser destacado passa pela junção das influências da banda e na criação de uma música que não é só brutalidade. O DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE lançou aqui um álbum realmente forte e que abre caminho para uma evolução ainda maior nos próximos trabalhos.

DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE is a new name to me and it was a pleasant surprise coming from the Canadian death metal scene. The band was formed in 2010 with the intention of exploring a brutal and old school death metal with a strong 90´s touch and I can confirm, after listening to “Spiralling to Lunacy”, that the band reaches this goal with mastery.

As the press-release itself points out, it is possible to perceive influences that unite American and European sounds. Even though the sound is brutal and definitely old school, there are more melodic elements inserted in the songs that, for example, remind me of the most classic works by Edge of Sanity. This becomes very clear when playing the excellent title track “Spiralling to Lunacy”.

The work done by the guitars in this album are a highlight, with impacting riffs and mainly a footprint that gives a great heavyness and aggression to the songs on the album. The quality is really striking in the compositions, as well as the dense atmosphere created in tracks like “Within the Darkness”, an instrumental that serves as an introduction to the album and that will work very well live.

“The Demons That Be” is a more direct track with powerful riffs. “Condemnation Through Fear” unites well the fast parts with heavier moments, which sound almost like a doom death. The result is impacting.

This flirtation with a heavy and reduced speed creates compositions that gain more prominence, as in the case of “Silencing the Masses”, whose almost doom aura at some moments reminded me of the old Paradise Lost.

“Products of Pain” is one of the best on the album. It uses speed and melody very efficiently. The vocalization is a glue that unites everything into one great track.

The next track hits harder. “New Normal Nihilist” goes down a more traditional path and nicely unites the harshness of American death metal with the melody of European death metal. “Freedom of Death” is the track that I really kept listening to a few times in a row. The riffs are catchy, it has an absolutely crushing chorus. A true death metal in the tradition of the old days.

The album ends with “False Reconciliation” and closes a death metal sequence of really above average quality. The most important point to be highlighted is the junction of the band’s influences and the creation of music that is not only brutality. DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE has released here a really strong album and opens the way for an even greater evolution in the next works.
