DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE – Spiralling to Lunacy (2023)

Essa dupla proveniente de Ottawa, no Canadá, está na ativa desde 2010 e “Spiralling to Lunacy” é o segundo álbum oficial da banda, que também conta com dois singles, dois ep´s e uma demo tape, que foi lançada em 2011.

Death metal é a área desses caras e o DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE faz isso com maestria. Não temos aqui um primor de originalidade, mas a banda é extremamente competente em sua proposta. O death metal aqui apresentando tem uma vide mais tradicional, é rápido em muitos momentos e soa como os velhos tempos.

A faixa de abertura é a instrumental “Within the Darkness” que é interessante, mas não diz muito sobre o que você vai encontrar a partir da segunda música. É quando “The Demons That Be” começa é que o DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE é revelado com mais clareza e o resultado disso é muito bom. A faixa tem algo do death metal europeu dos anos 90, incluindo em alguns momentos uma influência de grupos como o Unleashed, Edge of Sanity – influência essa que aparece bem evidente nos riffs da segunda faixa “Spiralling to Lunacy”.

Há uma pegada melódica nos riffs, mas ela não chega a modificar o nível agressivo desses riffs, o que me fez realmente lembrar dos suecos do Edge of Sanity em seus três primeiros álbuns. Inclusive essa faixa título acaba sendo uma das mais legais do álbum, exatamente por essa junção da agressividade com melodias.

“Condemnation Throught Fear” segue na mesma linha, mas tem alguns momentos mais trampados. O andamento de dois bumbos e o dois por um da batera soam totalmente velha escola, assim como os riffs utilizados e a vocalização. Na sequência vem “Silencing the Masses”, uma faixa mais focada em peso e com partes mais lentas. O uso de climas deixou a faixa com uma atmosfera matadora e os arranjos de guitarra lembram o Paradise Lost no primeiro e segundos álbuns. É uma faixa curta, mas bem interessante.

Andamentos mais velozes retornam com “Products of Pain” e “New Normal Nihilist”, que constroem uma sonoridade cheia de climas e se você lembra do Amorphis em seu primeiro trabalho você irá entender sobre o que estou falando.

“Freedom of Death” é, para mim, a melhor faixa do álbum. Aqui, melodia, peso, agressividade e aquela sonoridade cheia de clima está em perfeita sintonia. O riff principal da música é matador, assim como a vocalização feita aqui. Música incrível. Finalmente temos a faixa que encerra esse trabalho. “False Reconciliation” é outra grande música e é curioso que as duas melhores músicas tenham ficado no final, mas as duas seguem um direcionamento que a banda deve explorar mais nos próximos trabalho, já que são realmente diferenciadas.

Gostei bastante da ideia da arte da capa, que foi feita com tons de roxo, preto e branco e ficou um pouco com a vibe dos velhos quadrinhos de horror. Simples, mas muito efetiva. A produção do álbum é excelente também.

O DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE tem aqui um excelente trabalho, que explora e expõe as suas influências de forma clara, mas sem se tratar apenas de uma cópia e me deixa curioso a respeito do que os próximos trabalhos de estúdio irão apresentar.

This duo from Ottawa, Canada, has been active since 2010 and “Spiralling to Lunacy” is the second official album of the band, which also has two singles, two ep’s and a demo tape, which was released in 2011.

Death metal is the area of these guys and DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE does it with mastery. We don’t have here an originality exquisite, but the band is extremely competent in its proposal. The death metal presented here has a more traditional vide, is fast in many moments and sounds like the old times.

The opening track is the instrumental “Within the Darkness” which is interesting, but doesn’t say much about what you’ll find from the second song on. It is when “The Demons That Be” starts that DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE is revealed more clearly and the result of this is very good. The track has something of the European death metal of the 90s, including at times an influence of groups such as Unleashed, Edge of Sanity – an influence that is very evident in the riffs of the second track “Spiralling to Lunacy”.

There is a melodic feel to the riffs, but it doesn’t change the aggressive level of these riffs, which really reminded me of the Swedes from Edge of Sanity in their first three albums. Even this title track ends up being one of the coolest of the album, exactly for this combination of aggression with melodies.

“Condemnation Throught Fear” follows in the same vein, but has some more catchy moments. The double pedals drumming and the two-by-one drumming sound totally old school, as do the riffs used and the vocalisation. Next up is “Silencing the Masses”, a track more focused on heaviness and with slower parts. The use of climaxes left the track with a killer atmosphere and the guitar arrangements are reminiscent of Paradise Lost in the first and second albums. It’s a short track, but quite interesting.

Faster tempos return with “Products of Pain” and “New Normal Nihilist”, which build a sound full of climaxes and if you remember Amorphis in their first work you will understand what I’m talking about.

“Freedom of Death” is, for me, the best track of the album. Here, melody, heaviness, aggressiveness and that sonority full of climate is in perfect harmony. The main riff of the song is killer, as well as the vocalisation done here. Amazing music. Finally we have the track that closes this work. “False Reconciliation” is another great song and it is curious that the two best songs were at the end, but both follow a direction that the band should explore more in the next work, since they are really differentiated.

I really liked the idea of the cover art, which was made with shades of purple, black and white and got a bit of the old horror comics vibe. Simple, but very effective. The production of the album is excellent as well.

DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE has here an excellent work, which explores and exposes its influences in a clear way, but without being just a copy and makes me curious about what the next studio works will present.
