COSCRADH – Nahanagan Stadial (CD 2022)

Eu estava com o nome dessa banda na cabeça desde que entrevistei o “Bones” do DREAD SOVEREIGN, no ano passado. Ele havia me recomendado o COSCRADH como uma das melhores jovens formações irlandesas de metal extremo, digna de atenção.

 Na época, o quarteto de Dublin havia lançado uma demo homônima em 2016 e dois EPs sólidos, “Of Death and Delirium” em 2017 e “Mesradh Machae” em 2021. Fato interessante sobre a banda é o fato deles escreverem utilizando uma versão arcaica do gaélico, uma bela e extremamente difícil língua de origem celta, nada parecida com o inglês.

 O próprio nome da banda pode ser traduzido como “massacre“, ou uma forma de triunfo em batalha. Seu primeiro álbum de estúdio será finalmente lançado no início de agosto, via “Invictus Productions”, sob o título “Nahanagan Stadial”, que se refere a um período glacial de 10.000 anos atrás, que extinguiu quase toda a vida na ilha irlandesa.

 A formação atual conta com músicos com respeitável formação no cenário musical extremo da ilha. Há membros da SACRILEGIA, ATHEOS e o excepcional VIRCOLAC, entre outros.

 A música produzida pela COSCRADH é uma forma brutal de Black Death Metal, repleta de ódio e dissonância, tecnicamente soberba, intensa e dotada de altos níveis de complexidade. O álbum é composto por cinco faixas, com duração média de oito minutos (!).

 “Nahanagan Stadial” começa lentamente a peregrinação herética pelo submundo celta, criando tensão em meio à atmosfera densa e guitarras caóticas. A bateria vertiginosa e as entonações demoníacas são apoiadas por riffs ferozmente entrelaçados. Faixa de abertura incrível.

 Mais curta e direta ao ponto, “Feast of the Epiphany” não perde tempo construindo atmosfera. A ultraviolência contagiosa domina o ambiente com autoridade. selvageria extrema. A seguinte “Plagues of Knowth” tem mais variações rítmicas e uma performance sobre-humana do baterista. Há uma sobreposição de vocais, alguns com efeitos fantasmagóricos, que tornam a atmosfera dessa faixa aterrorizante, acompanhada de um instrumental pra lá de bestial.

 O ápice da dissonância e insanidade é atingido em “Cladh Hálainn”, com as melhores guitarras do álbum. É até difícil descrever no papel a carnificina propagada por esses senhores, mas quando você pensa que chegou o fim do mundo, eles aceleram. Faixa absurdamente foda. E o baixo ressoando no final, junto com os efeitos sonoros, foi um toque genial.

 A peça de encerramento “Feallaire Dóite” é a mais extensa, não tem pressa a se desenvolver. Ganha velocidade e mais impulso após o terceiro minuto, e os vocais em camadas dão um efeito desorientador e um tanto perturbador, especialmente devido aos gritos desesperados que ecoam persistentemente. Caos sonoro impiedosamente revelado, e soberbamente executado.

 A devastação disseminada pelo álbum de estreia do COSCRADH é imensa, equivalente a um terremoto estourando os nove pontos na escala Richter. Preciso de uma cópia do CD para a coleção, e preciso testemunhar isso ao vivo algum dia. Em tempo: Magnífica, a arte da capa de “Khaos Diktator Design”, complementando um pacote quase perfeito.

 Altamente recomendado para maníacos que, como eu, curtam a demência de atos como MALTHUSIAN (IRL), VIRCOLAC (IRL), SUFFERING HOUR (EUA), ABYSSAL (GBR), ANTEDILUVIAN (CAN), PSEUDOGOD (RUS), MITOCHONDRION (CAN), QRIXKUOR (GBR).

I’ve had this band’s name in my head since I interviewed “Bones” from DREAD SOVEREIGN, last year. He had recommended me COSCRADH as one of the best young Irish extreme metal formations, worthy of attention.

 At the time, the Dublin quartet had released a homonymous demo in 2016 and two solid EPs, “Of Death and Delirium” in 2017 and “Mesradh Machae” in 2021. An interesting detail about the band is the fact that they write using an ancestral version of Gaelic, a beautiful and extremely difficult language of Celtic origin.

 The band’s name itself can be translated as “massacre“, or a form of triumph in battle. Their first studio album will be finally released in early August, via “Invictus Productions”, under the title “Nahanagan Stadial”, that refers to a glacial period 10,000 years ago, which extinguished almost all life on the Irish island.

 The current lineup has musicians with respectable background in the island’s extreme music scene. There are members of SACRILEGIA, ATHEOS and the exceptional VIRCOLAC, among others.

 Music produced by COSCRADH is a brutal brand of Black Death Metal, filled with hate and dissonance, technically superb, intense, and endowed with high levels of complexity. The album consists of five tracks, with an average running time of eight minutes (!).

 “Nahanagan Stadial” slowly begins the heretical pilgrimage through the Celtic underworld, building tension amid the dense atmosphere and chaotic guitars. The dizzying drums and demonic intonations are supported by vitriolic, fiercely intertwined riffs. Awesome opening track.

 Shorter and to the point, “Feast of the Epiphany” wastes no time building atmosphere. Contagious ultraviolence dominates the environment with authority. Extreme savagery. The following “Plagues of Knowth” has more rhythmic variations, and a superhuman performance by the drummer. There is an overlapping of vocals, some with ghostly effects, which make the atmosphere of this track terrifying, accompanied by an instrumental beyond beastly.

 The pinnacle of dissonance and insanity is reached on “Cladh Hálainn”, with the best guitars on the album. It’s even difficult to describe the carnage these gentlemen disseminate, but when you think the end of the world is approaching, they accelerate. Absurdly badass track. And the bass resonating at the end, along with the sound effects, was a fine touch.

 Closing piece “Feallaire Dóite” is the most extensive, and takes its time developing. It picks up speed and more momentum after the third minute, and the layered vocals lend a disorienting and somewhat disturbing effect, especially for the desperate shrieks that persistently echo. Reverberating chaos mercilessly revealed, and superbly performed.

 The devastation propagated by COSCRADH’s debut album is massive, equivalent to an earthquake exceeding nine points on the Richter scale. I need a CD copy for the collection, and I need to witness this live someday. In time: Magnificent, the cover art by “Khaos Diktator Design”, complementing an almost perfect package.

 Highly recommended for maniacs who, like myself, enjoy the dementia of acts like MALTHUSIAN (IRL), VIRCOLAC (IRL), SUFFERING HOUR (USA), ABYSSAL (GBR), ANTEDILUVIAN (CAN), PSEUDOGOD (RUS), MITOCHONDRION (CAN), QRIXKUOR (GBR).
