O lendário SHADOW resume seus 26 anos de experiência à frente do ícone BLACK ALTAR, sua visão, últimos lançamentos e projetos para o futuro.
Saudações SHADOW, estamos honrados por apresentar o BLACK ALTAR nas páginas do The Old Coffin Spirit. Você iniciou a banda em 1996 e a tem liderado desde então. O mundo era bastante diferente naquela época, até porque se passaram 26 anos. Considerando-se tudo, como você se sente carregando o estandarte do verdadeiro Black Metal após tanto tempo?
Shadow: Hail! Sim, passou muito rápido. No entanto, quando se tratava de Black Metal, aqueles eram tempos muito diferentes. Tudo era especial, novo e real, não contaminado pelo comercialismo. O Black metal era levado extremamente a sério. A internet estava apenas começando a se tornar popular, então tudo era mais secreto e elitista. Agora você sabe como é. Sinto-me orgulhoso por ainda estar ativo e poder transmitir um pouco desse espírito dos velhos tempos no meu trabalho.
Você tem morado e trabalhado em Londres (Inglaterra) há vários anos, uma cidade que você já conhece muito bem. Como é isso para um artista Polonês de Metal Extremo, você está satisfeito com a sua localização atual e a sua vida cotidiana?
Shadow: Eu tenho vivido em Londres há quase 10 anos, e para ser honesto, para um fã de metal é quase um paraíso, porque quase todas as turnês também passam por Londres, além de vários shows individuais. Às vezes há 3 ótimos shows no mesmo dia, e você não sabe o que escolher. Há também centenas de fãs de metal extremo aqui. Além disso, a qualidade de vida é bastante alta, por isso estou muito feliz por ter me mudado para cá, embora às vezes sinta falta de mais natureza, e de um lugar mais tranquilo, por exemplo: à beira mar.
A formação atual da banda foi fortalecida com a entrada do “Les” (ex-BEHEMOTH e DAMNATION) admitido oficialmente como guitarrista, bem como o baterista “Mordrath Pariah” (ANDARTAR, ex-PANDEMIC GENOCIDE). Podemos também considerer o “Mauser” (famoso pelo VADER e DIES IRAE) um membro da banda, ou ele permanece como um colaborador casual? Essa formação parece realmente sólida e experiente, pensando nos futuros lançamentos e shows ao vivo.
Shadow: “Mauser” não é mais membro do BLACK ALTAR, sua participação deveria ser uma colaboração mais casual. Ele deveria fazer shows conosco e compor algo de vez em quando, mas ele queria começar a ensaiar logo antes dos primeiros shows, e eu queria alguém mais disponível, que pudesse começar a praticar conosco muito mais cedo, então “Mauser” foi substituído pelo talentoso guitarrista inglês “Dave Powell” (MASTER’S CALL, NECROTIZE). A formação ao vivo será completada pelo vocalista húngaro “Khrul” (NOCRUL, SHADOWTHRONE, VORKUTA).
“Deathiah Manifesto” é o novo, excepcional Split composto por BLACK ALTAR e VULTURE LORD (NOR), o qual foi lançado via “Odium Records”, que é o seu selo de Black Metal. Foi realmente divertido de resenhar o Split, e testemunhar o poder da velha, maléfica chama queimando. Por favor, fale-nos mais sobre a criação do material, e o seu processo de gravação:
Shadow: Em primeiro lugar, eu queria que fosse uma homenagem à antiga cena Black Metal dos anos 90, especialmente a norueguesa. Existe melhor ocasião e maneira de fazer isso do que um Split com o lendário VULTURE LORD, que renasceu após 18 anos, com músicas compostas por “Nefas” e seus vocais em uma música? É por isso que eu também preparei minhas faixas com esse espírito, compus a música “Sacrilegious Congregation” e escrevi letras tradicionais de Black Metal, montei um conceito para um vídeo e acho que consegui produzir aquela vibe meio ingênua dos anos 90, da qual sinto falta. Para a segunda faixa, “Nyx”, convidei “Thomas Erikson”, o frontman do MORK, que também tem um forte sentimento pelo Black Metal norueguês. Ele fez um ótimo trabalho. A introdução e a conclusão foram compostas pelo velho demônio, “Ludo ‘Evil’ Lejeune”, e ouvi comentários de que essas são algumas das introduções mais perturbadoras que as pessoas já ouviram. Além disso, acho que o sintetizador, como um todo, é bem interessante, uma viagem sentimental ao passado, quando o Black Metal ainda não estava contaminado pelo comercialismo.
A arte de capa impactante do Split foi criada pelo artista Indonésio “Jenglot Hitam”. Ela é, provavelmente, a minha preferida na discografia do BLACK ALTAR. Como foi trabalhar com ele? Ele chegou a ouvir o material enquanto trabalhava na capa?
Shadow: A capa não foi criada com o pensamento voltado a esse Split. Eu simplesmente o encontrei como um dos trabalhos que ele colocou à venda, e decidi que se encaixaria perfeitamente ao Split.
O BLACK ALTAR tem uma longa tradição de lançar grandes Splits, unindo-se a nomes como VESANIA, VARATHRON, THORNSPAWN, BEASTCRAFT, KIRKEBRANN e, para o lançamento atual, ao poderoso VULTURE LORD. Você pode nos dizer alguma coisa em relação aos novos Splits programados para o futuro próximo? Alguma chance de um lançamento envolver hordas Brasileiras?
Shadow: É verdade que o BLACK ALTAR já gravou muitos Splits com bandas renomadas, a maioria das quais conhecemos há muito tempo e respeitamos mutuamente. No momento estamos gravando mais um Split com 2 bandas cult que ainda não quero nomear. No futuro não excluo um Split com bandas brasileiras, algumas propostas já foram feitas, mas antes disso é hora de produzir um álbum completo. Enquanto isso, esse ano o selo “Masters of Khaos” da Colômbia lançará 2 EPs de 7″ com bandas da Colômbia e do Chile, que contarão com as 2 faixas do BLACK ALTAR que apareceram no Split com KIRKEBRANN e BEASTCRAFT.
Falando em tradição, o BLACK ALTAR lançou apenas dois álbuns completos de estúdio, ambos considerados clássicos do Black Metal: “Black Altar” em 2004 e “Death Fanaticism” em 2008. Faz bastante tempo, mas estou ciente de que você tem trabalhado em músicas novas e vem se preparando para lançar um novo álbum. Como tem evoluído o trabalho, e para quando podemos esperar, finalmente, ouvir um novo disco completo?
Shadow: O álbum já está composto há muito tempo, e temos ainda metade das faixas para o próximo, então depois de terminar a gravação do split mencionado acima, estamos lentamente iniciando a gravação do álbum completo. Provavelmente será lançado em menos de dois anos.
Esse ano também testemunhou o lançamento de um Single e uma Compilação do BLACK ALTAR, intitulados “Arcana Of The Higher Principles”, contendo 14 faixas no total, incluindo uma inédita e material de Splits anteriores. Conte-nos mais sobre esse material:
Shadow: Juntamente com o “V. Priest”, líder do ACHERONTAS, estávamos pensando em lançar algo do BLACK ALTAR em edição limitada sob o seu selo “Zazen Sounds”. Eu tive a ideia de que poderia ser uma compilação de músicas dos 3 Splits. Para torná-lo mais atraente, no último minuto decidi adicionar uma faixa inédita. A edição inteira esgotou no dia seguinte ao lançamento, e nunca será relançada pela “Zazen Sounds”. Muitas pessoas têm perguntado sobre este material, e eu tenho uma boa notícia para eles. A gravadora “Masters of Khaos” da Colômbia acaba de lançar um CD de edição limitada no formato jewel case.
O som do BLACK ALTAR tem sua personalidade própria, refletindo a sua visão particular do Black Metal. Quais artistas e/ou bandas você apontaria como suas fontes fundamentais de inspiração?
Shadow: Geralmente, o BLACK ALTAR é inspirado pelo Black Metal escandinavo da 2ª onda. Eu não me mantenho restrito a esse estilo, só acho que ao longo dos anos o BLACK ALTAR desenvolveu seu próprio estilo distinto, que também está evoluindo. Agora que novos músicos chegaram e começaram a criar músicas, o estilo vai seguir evoluindo, mas eu me mantenho no controle e sempre haverá elementos que são característicos do BLACK ALTAR, como meus vocais e a estrutura das músicas.
De que forma você se conecta ao mundo spiritual, e ao oculto? Sei que você é próximo do “The Temple of Ascending Flame” e da abordagem deles ao “Caminho da Mão Esquerda” e da “Draconian Current”, mas aparentemente você age mais como um lobo solitário. Você se vê como um Satanista? Você também gosta de Filosofia?
Shadow: Está correto. O lado espiritual é muito importante para mim. Tenho explorado intensamente o “Caminho Draconiano” nos últimos anos e sou amigo do fundador desta ordem, “Asenath Mason”. Recentemente, juntei-me ao OFERMOD da Suécia com o guitarrista “Les”, que é provavelmente a banda mais envolvida no “Caminho Draconiano” e está intimamente ligada ao “Dragon Rouge” e ao “Tomas Karlsson”. O líder da OFERMOD “Belfagor” é fanaticamente dedicado a Belial. No entanto, como você mencionou, sou mais um lobo solitário e não pertenço formalmente a nenhuma dessas ordens. Se eu sou um satanista? Acho que a maioria das pessoas me chamaria assim, embora eu não seja um adorador involuntário de Satanás, mas cultivo meu individualismo e sigo meu próprio caminho.
Quais são os seus cinco discos preferidos do Metal Brasileiro? Você conhece, e curte alguma das nossas bandas recentes? Fique à vontade para compartilhar a sua opinião e visão sobre a nossa cena como um todo.
Shadow: A cena brasileira é poderosa, e tem uma longa tradição. Desde os antigos SEPULTURA e SARCÓFAGO, que tiveram grande influência sobre o cenário mundial, até as dezenas de bandas underground que ainda hoje estão ativas desde os anos 90. Os meus discos favoritos são, com certeza, os 2 primeiros do SARCÓFAGO e os 4 primeiros do SEPULTURA, embora raramente escute estes sons mais antigos no dia-a-dia.
Fiquei realmente feliz quando li sua decisão de tocar shows ao vivo com o BLACK ALTAR. Infelizmente, a pandemia virou o mundo de ponta cabeça, e inúmeros festivais e shows tiveram que ser cancelados, ou postergados. Qual é a sua situação atual? Podemos esperar ver a banda tocando ao vivo em breve?
Shadow: Após cerca de 25 anos, finalmente decidi começar a tocar ao vivo com o BLACK ALTAR. Depois de algumas experiências com a formação, finalmente tenho uma ótima, a melhor da história da banda, com a qual posso pensar em conquistar o palco. Na verdade, temos todo o material que precisamos, e estamos começando a polir todos os detalhes, vocais etc. Estou recebendo muitas ofertas para tocar por todo o mundo, mas o problema é que vou enfrentar duas cirurgias de fusão vertebral extremamente sérias nos próximos meses, após as quais o período de reabilitação é de cerca de um ano. Então não posso confirmar nenhum show ainda, porque não sei qual será a situação em breve.
“Odium Records” é o seu Selo de Black Metal, o qual você fundou em 1997 e tem estado ativo desde então, lançando regularmente material e bandas de qualidade. Seu foco atual é voltado ao BLACK ALTAR, portanto quais são os seus planos para o selo?
Shadow: Nos últimos anos, tenho investido muito tempo, energia e dinheiro na “Odium Records” e lancei bandas muito decentes como MEPHORASH, GRAVELAND, HELL-BORN (com ex-membros do BEHEMOTH), BEASTCRAFT, VULTURE LORD, VINCENT CROWLEY (ACHERON) etc. e alguns grandes nomes estão surgindo. No entanto, depois de todos esses anos, estou um pouco farto de colocar todo o meu dinheiro e tempo em uma gravadora, especialmente porque sou muito exigente com a qualidade dos meus lançamentos e principalmente sua promoção, e isso me custa em média mais de US$ 10k para lançar um disco, não $500 como muitos outros selos. Além disso, quando eu começar a fazer shows com o BLACK ALTAR e OFERMOD, e eu tenho mais 2 novos projetos, não terei tempo suficiente para tudo. É por isso que quero limitar as atividades da gravadora, principalmente aos meus projetos e ocasionalmente lançar algo especial de outras bandas.
O que mais você gostaria de conquistar como artista e líder da banda? Só Podemos esperar que você siga lançando música de qualidade, e, claro, gostaríamos de vê-lo tocando ao vivo.
Shadow: No campo editorial, já estou parcialmente realizado, enquanto o principal objetivo agora será fazer muitos shows com as duas bandas. Isso é o que eu sinto falta. Além disso, desde que minha saúde esteja boa e eu esteja de pé novamente após a cirurgia nas costas, tudo deve ficar bem, e eu poderei tocar por um longo tempo.

Legendary frontman SHADOW sums up his 26 years’ experience leading iconic BLACK ALTAR, his vision on Black Metal, recent releases and future endeavors.
Hails SHADOW, we are honored to feature BLACK ALTAR on The Old Coffin Spirit’s pages. You started the band in 1996 and have been leading it ever since. The world was quite different back then, as it’s been 26 years ago. Everything considered, how do you feel bearing the True Black Metal banner after such a long time?
Shadow: Hail! Yeah, it passed very quickly. However, when it came to black metal, those were very different times. Everything was special, new and real, not tainted by commercialism. Black metal was taken deadly seriously. The internet was just becoming popular, so everything was more secretive and elitist. Now you know how it is. I feel proud to still be active and to be able to convey some of that spirit of the old days in my work.
You’ve been living and working in London (GBR) for a few years now, a city you know very well. What’s it like for a Polish Extreme Metal artist, are you satisfied with your current location and daily life?
I’ve been living in London for almost 10 years now, and to be honest for a metal fan it’s almost a paradise, because almost all the tours also take place in London and various single concerts. Sometimes there are 3 very good concerts on the same day, and you don’t know what to choose. There are also hundreds of extreme metal fans here. Also, the quality of life is quite high, so I am very happy to have moved here, although sometimes I miss more nature and a quieter place, e.g. by the sea.
The band’s current lineup has been boosted with “Les” (ex-BEHEMOTH and DAMNATION) joining oficially as a guitarist, as well as the drummer “Mordrath Pariah” (ANDARTAR, ex-PANDEMIC GENOCIDE). Can we also consider “Mauser” (from VADER and DIES IRAE fame) a band member, or is he still a session musician? This sounds like a truly solid, experienced lineup for upcoming releases and shows.
Shadow: “Mauser” is no longer a member of BLACK ALTAR, and it was supposed to be a more casual collaboration. He was supposed to play gigs with us and compose something from time to time, but he wanted to start rehearsing just before the first gigs, and I wanted someone more available who could start practicing with us much earlier, so “Mauser” was replaced by the very talented English guitarist “Dave Powell” (MASTER’S CALL, NECROTIZE). The live line-up will be completed by Hungarian vocalist “Khrul” (NOCRUL, SHADOWTHRONE, VORKUTA).
“Deathiah Manifesto” is the new, outstanding Split featuring BLACK ALTAR and VULTURE LORD (NOR), which was released via “Odium Records”, your Black Metal Label. It was honestly fun to review it, and to witness the old malevolent flame burning. Please, tell us more about the material’s creation, and its recording process?
Shadow: First of all, I wanted it to be a tribute to the Old Black Metal Scene of the 90s, especially the Norwegian one. Is there a better occasion and way to do that than a split with the legendary VULTURE LORD, who returned after 18 years, with songs composed by “Nefas” and his vocals in one song? That’s why I also prepared my tracks in this spirit, composed the song “Sacrilegious Congregation” and wrote traditional Black Metal lyrics, put together a concept for a video to go with it and I think I managed to get that slightly naive 90s vibe that I miss. For the second track, “Nyx”, I invited “Thomas Erikson”, the frontman of MORK, who also has a very strong feel for Norwegian Black Metal. He did a very good job. The intro and outro were composed by the old devil, “Ludo ‘Evil’ Lejeune”, and I’ve heard feedback that these are some of the most disturbing intros people have heard. Also, I think the synth, as a whole, is quite interesting, a sentimental journey into the past, when Black Metal was not yet tainted by commercialism.
The Split’s striking artwork was conceived by the Indonesian artist “Jenglot Hitam”. It’s probably my favorite in BLACK ALTAR’s discography. What was it like working with him? Did he get to listen to the material while creating the cover art?
Shadow: The cover was not prepared with the thought of this split. I simply saw it as one of the ones he put up for sale and decided it would be a perfect fit for this split.
BLACK ALTAR has a long tradition of releasing great Splits, teaming up with names like VESANIA, VARATHRON, THORNSPAWN, BEASTCRAFT, KIRKEBRANN and, for the current release, the mighty VULTURE LORD. Can you tell us anything about the new Splits coming out in the near future? Any chances for a release involving Brazilian acts?
Shadow: It’s true that BLACK ALTAR has recorded many Splits with renowned bands, most of whom we have known for a long time and respect each other. We are currently recording another Split with 2 cult bands that I don’t want to name yet. In the future I don’t exclude a split with Brazilian bands, some proposals have already been made, but before that it’s time to make a full album. In the meantime, this year the “Masters of Khaos” label in Colombia will release 2 7″ EPs with bands from Colombia and Chile, which will feature the 2 BLACK ALTAR tracks that appeared on the split with KIRKEBRANN and BEASTCRAFT.
Talking about tradition, BLACK ALTAR has released only two full-length records, both considered classic Black Metal albums: “Black Altar” back in 2004 and “Death Fanaticism” in 2008. It’s been a long time, and I’m aware you’ve been working on new songs and getting things ready for a new Full. How is it going, and when can we expect to finally listen to a new album?
Shadow: The album has already been composed for a long time and we even have half of the tracks for the next one, so after finishing the recording of the aforementioned split, we are slowly starting the recording of the full album. It will probably be released in less than two years.
This year has also witnessed the release of a BLACK ALTAR single and compilation, named “Arcana Of The Higher Principles” with 14 tracks total, including a new song and material from previous Splits. Please, tell us more about them.
Shadow: With “V. Priest”, leader of ACHERONTAS, we were thinking of releasing something of BLACK ALTAR in limited edition on his “Zazen Sounds” label. I came up with the idea that it could be a compilation of songs from the 3 splits. To make it more attractive, at the last minute I decided to add a premiere track. The entire edition sold out the day after the release and will never be re-released by “Zazen Sounds”. Many people have been asking about this material and I have good news for them. The label “Masters of Khaos” from Colombia has just pressed a limited edition jewel case cd.
BLACK ALTAR’s sound has its own personality, reflecting your particular vision of Black Metal. Which artists and/or bands would you point as your fundamental sources of inspiration?
Shadow: Generally BLACK ALTAR is inspired by 2nd wave Scandinavian Black Metal. I don’t hold to this style though, I just think that over the years BLACK ALTAR have developed their own distinctive style which is also evolving. Now that new musicians have come in and started creating new songs, the style will evolve again, but I’m in control and there will always be elements that are characteristic of BLACK ALTAR, such as my vocals and the structure of the songs.
How do you connect with the spiritual world, and the occult? I know you’re close to The Temple of Ascending Flame and their approach to the Left Hand Path and Draconian Current, but it seems you are more of a lone wolf. Do you see yourself as a Satanist? Are you also into Philosophy?
Shadow: It’s correct. The spiritual side is very important to me. I have been exploring the Draconian Path intensively in recent years and am friends with the founder of this order, “Asenath Mason”. I recently joined the Swedish OFERMOD with guitarist “Les”, which is probably the most involved band in Draconian Path and is closely connected to Dragon Rouge and “Tomas Karlsson”. OFERMOD’s leader “Belfagor” is fanatically devoted to Belial. However, as you mentioned I am more of a lone wolf and do not formally belong to any of these orders. Am I a satanist? I think most people would call me that, although I am not an involuntary worshipper of Satan, but cultivate my individualism and follow my own path.
What are your five all time Brazilian Metal albums? Do you know and enjoy any of our recent bands? Feel free to mention your opinion and vision on our scene as a whole.
Shadow: The Brazilian scene is powerful and has a long-standing tradition. Starting from the old SEPULTURA and SARCÓFAGO, which have had a great influence on the world scene, to the dozens of underground bands that are still active today since the 90s. My favourite albums are for sure the first 2 SARCÓFAGO albums and the first 4 SEPULTURA ones, although I rarely listen to these oldies on a daily basis anymore.
I was really glad to read your decision to play live concerts with BLACK ALTAR. Unfortunately, the pandemics turned the world upside down, and almost all festivals and shows have been either canceled, or postponed. What’s the current situation? Can we expect to see the band playing live any soon?
Shadow: After about 25 years I finally decided to start playing gigs with BLACK ALTAR. After some experiments with the line-up, I finally have an optimal one, the best in the band’s history, with which I can think about conquering the stage. In fact, we have all the material we need, and we are starting to polish all the details, vocals etc.
I’m getting a lot of offers to play from all over the world, but the problem is that I’m facing 2 extremely serious spinal fusion surgeries in the next few months, after which the rehabilitation period is about a year. So, I can’t confirm any gigs as yet, because I don’t know what the situation will be in a while.
“Odium Records” is your Black Metal Label, which you started in 1997 and has been active ever since, releasing quality material and bands. Your focus now is mainly on BLACK ALTAR, so what are your plans for the Label?
Shadow: In recent years I have put a lot of time, energy, and money into “Odium Records” and have released very decent bands like MEPHORASH, GRAVELAND, HELL-BORN (with ex BEHEMOTH members), BEASTCRAFT, VULTURE LORD, VINCENT CROWLEY (ACHERON) etc. and some big names are coming up. However, after all these years I’m a bit fed up with putting all my money and time into a label, especially as I’m very particular about the quality of my releases and especially their promotion, and it costs me on average over $10k to release one record, not $500 like many other labels. Besides, if I have to start playing concerts with BLACK ALTAR and OFERMOD, and I have 2 other new projects, I won’t have enough time for everything. That’s why I want to limit the activities of the label mainly to my projects and occasionally release something special by other bands.
What else would you like to achieve as an artist and with the band? We can only hope you keep releasing quality music, and, of course, we’d enjoy seeing you playing live.
Shadow: In the field of publishing, I am already partly fulfilled, while the main goal now will be to play many concerts with both bands. This is what I miss. Also, as long as my health is good and I’m back on my feet after the back surgery, everything should be fine, and I should be able to play for a long time.
