O AMEN CORNER figura entre as bandas mais antigas da cena black metal brasileira e tem estado na ativa desde 1992, quando lançou sua primeira demo tape “Eternal Prophecies”. Dentro da cena metal extrema do Brasil, eles são um nome de peso e difícil é encontrar um verdadeiro fã do metal negro aqui que não os conheça.

Eu pessoalmente nunca fui um grande fã da sonoridade da banda então posso afirmar que não acompanhei cada lançamento deles. Eu cheguei a escutar bastante a banda nos anos 90, com alguns tapes piratas de shows deles pelo Brasil. Depois fui perdendo o interesse, mas nunca deixei de respeitar o grupo pelo seu trabalho e sua perseverança em uma realidade que se mostra tão difícil para o metal, ainda mais quando se abraça o caminho da mão esquerda, indo de encontro ao conservadorismo cristão que apodrece nossa sociedade.

“Written by the Devil”, novo trabalho da banda de Curitiba/PR, é lançado seis anos após seu último álbum “Under the Whip and the Crown” e se eu não estiver errado (me corrijam, por favor) é o primeiro trabalho do grupo que também sai pela Hammerheart Records.

Ao ouvir o álbum inteiro a primeira impressão que tive é que a banda evolui imensamente nesses anos todos e há uma coesão em termos de composição que não existia tão forte em seus primeiros trabalhos. O black metal do grupo sempre foi mais focado no peso, na construção de atmosferas blasfemas do que na velocidade desenfreada. Se fosse colocar influências para oferecer um norte de influências, talvez o velho Samael fosse uma nome a ser citado.

Eu realmente gostei do álbum. É intenso, bem composto, pesado e carrega um sentimento de maldade que emana de cada nota que é tocada. Um bom exemplo disso é a faixa “The Protectors”. Ela possui um certo grau de primitivismo que é uma característica incrível do metal negro produzido no Brasil. Há um propósito em torno da densidade construída aqui.

Para aqueles que conhecem o Amen Corner a faixa “Fall and Ascension” mostra as características mais marcantes da banda. Um black metal lento e cheio de feeling que permite vociferações blasfemas sem cerimônia. Não há dúvida alguma para mim que a melhor música do álbum vem a seguir. “Signal from Beyond” é uma das melhores composições que já ouvi do Amen Corner. A base principal é infernal e dita o caminho da perdição para quem a ouve. Em alguns momentos mais rápidos a sonoridade criada me fez lembrar do primeiro álbum do Dream Death. Muito foda essa composição.

“Inferno” é outra música muito boa e aqui você entender que as raízes do Amen Corner são infernalmente profundas. Uma música simples, mas que oferece muito em termos de atmosfera. Na mesma pega vem a faixa título. “Written by the Devil” começa com riffs que me lembraram o Sarcófago, mas em uma versão mais lenta e ritmada. Ela divide com “Signal from Beyond” o topo da qualidade desse novo trabalho. O álbum se encerra com a litania maldita intitulada “Lucifer, a Suprema Luz da Manhã”.

“Written by the Devil” é um dos melhores trabalhos que a banda já gravou. Tem mais peso, mais consistência e principalmente mantém as características do AMEN CORNER intactas. Não posso deixar de citar também a arte da capa desse trabalho que é lindíssima. Imagino como deve ser impactante em uma capa de vinil. O metal extremo brasileiro mais uma vez mostra sua qualidade.

AMEN CORNER are among the oldest bands in the Brazilian black metal scene and have been active since 1992, when they released their first demo tape “Eternal Prophecies”. Within Brazil’s extreme metal scene, they are a big name and it’s hard to find a true black metal fan here who doesn’t know them.

I personally have never been a big fan of the band’s sound, so I can say that I haven’t followed their every release. I did listen to the band quite a bit in the 90s, with some pirated tapes of their shows around Brazil. Then I lost interest, but I never stopped respecting the band for their work and their perseverance in a reality that is so difficult for metal, especially when it embraces the left-hand path, going against the Christian conservatism that rots our society.

“Written by the Devil”, the new work by the band from Curitiba/PR, is released six years after their last album “Under the Whip and the Crown” and if I’m not wrong (please correct me) it’s the group’s first work that also comes out on Hammerheart Records.

Listening to the whole album, the first impression I got was that the band has evolved immensely in all these years and there is a cohesion in terms of composition that wasn’t so strong in their early work. The group’s black metal has always been more focused on heaviness, on building blasphemous atmospheres than on unbridled speed. If I were to list some influences, perhaps old Samael would be a name to mention.

I really liked the album. It’s intense, well composed, heavy and carries a sense of evil that emanates from every note that is played. A good example of this is the track “The Protectors”. It has a certain degree of primitivism that is an incredible characteristic of black metal produced in Brazil. There is a purpose around the density built up here.

For those who know Amen Corner, the track “Fall and Ascension” shows the band’s most distinctive characteristics. A slow black metal full of feeling that allows blasphemous vociferation without ceremony. There’s no doubt in my mind that the best song on the album comes next. “Signal from Beyond” is one of the best compositions I’ve ever heard from Amen Corner. The main base is hellish and sets the listener on a path to doom. In some of the faster moments, the sound it creates reminds me of Dream Death‘s first album. Very cool composition.

“Inferno” is another very good song and here you understand that Amen Corner‘s roots run hellishly deep. A simple song, but one that offers a lot in terms of atmosphere. In the same vein comes the title track. “Written by the Devil” begins with riffs that reminded me of Sarcofago, but in a slower, more rhythmic version. It shares with “Signal from Beyond” the top quality of this new work. The album closes with the cursed litany entitled “Lucifer, the Supreme Light of the Morning”.

“Written by the Devil” is one of the best albums the band has ever recorded. It has more weight, more consistency and, above all, it keeps AMEN CORNER‘s characteristics intact. I must also mention the beautiful cover artwork. I can only imagine how striking it must be on a vinyl cover. Brazilian extreme metal once again shows its quality.
